36.0. "Ottawa Housing Market" by PARITY::MOORADIAN () Wed Dec 16 1987 23:23

I am interested in knowing what the housing costs are around
the Ottawa area. Is there a great difference between the
price of house vs a townhouse/condex/condo?

   Housing costs in Ottawa....

Garden Home (Townhouse).... $80,000 and up
Semi-detach (Side by side)...$90,000 and up
   Single Home... $120,000 and up

These are rough figures but may give you an idea of the Housing
market in Ottawa..Prices have been reasonably stable for the past year as there
has been a large construction boom..
If you are willing to travel from outside town (1/2 Hour drive) prices
can be somewhat lower than above...Also, $120,000 won't buy you a very large
house...<Prices in CDN. Dollars>..

Current housing prices are stabilized somewhat.
A single family home with a small (30' x 100') lot single car garage
and 1800 sp. ft. is going for $145,000 to $160,000 these days, depending
where it is located. The west end of Ottawa, where Digital is located
is more expensive than the east end of Ottawa. Going down to
semi-detachecd and condo.'s, just subtract about $20,000 each step.
As the interest rates are so high in Canada, there may well be
some fallout in the real estate market and then the prices are
predicted to come down next year or so.
If one is prepared to live outside the city, and lot's of small
towns surround Ottawa, then you could knock off some money on the
cost of a house. A lot of people working here in Kanata, drive in
from either Carleton Place, Arnprior, Almonte, Smiths Falls, etc...
Most of them spend 30 minutes, gettting in or out of work even in
    winter.
     Hope this helps.
    Regards, R.T.T.

Expensive? People in Toronto would *kill* for prices like that. Heard on
the radio last night that the average new home price in TO last month was
$284,000.

A 4-bed semi 3 doors down from me on the west side of Mississauga is listed
for $199,900; 3-bed detached homes are $220,000 and up (and up, and up ..).
Be grateful your housing is so cheap! I'd love to move -- 1 wife, 3 kids,
1 cat, 2 goldfish and me don't fit too well into a 1300 sq. ft. 3-bed semi,
but a 2,500 sq. ft. 4-bed detached would be ideal. Anybody like to
exchange?

Almonte's not there anymore, Duncan. They moved away and put a Klingon
cloaking device around what was left.

Ah, yes! It's just a fig newton of our imagination now.

But they sure knew where to set their flagpoles, in that town...
