Do you think it has something to do with Ballard's retirement plans?

An immenent announcement like that might motivate some of his employees.
25.2Break up the Leafs..oh..never mind!KAOFS::PAVEZKAFri Nov 06 1987 19:0511
Yea, Harold will be getting involved soon. Anybody playing for
the leafs that is having a good year will soon be traded. harold
figures that these players will soon be asking for a raise so he
might as well get rid of them now before they become a disruptive
influence on the rest of teh team's pay scale. Past history shows
Vaive, Thomas, Sittler and Macdonald being just to name a few.
So I guess that Wendel might as well put his house up for sell.

PS I hear that there is fan somewhere in Canada that lives and
dies with the Buds. His name is something like Lloyd, Beev..no,
Bevan..yea that's it. Why has he not replied to this note?

OK Carmen,Andy,Randy,Jim and the rest of you Habs fans.So the Canadiens
got lucky again last night.I've never seen a luckier team in my life. Two out
of the three Montreal goals again were classic Hab goals. The first goal hits
a toronto player, bounces off right onto Lemieux's stick with an open net .The
third goal was even worse.Even Chris Nilan (although I was surprised) can put
a puck in when a normal Montreal shot from the point misses the net(as usual)
bounces off the backboard and comes out the other side right on to his stick.
It's sickening to watch this, game in and game out from this team.
Anyway enough of this game,on to my next beef.I'm tired of hearing
"Porous Norris" and all that crap. The Norris is the most competitive division
in the N.H.L. I'd say we're more than holding our own against any other
division in the league.Let's take last week for example.Toronto when they
won the five games in a row defeated 1) Mario and company 2) The Islanders
who are in first in their division 3) Chicago which by the way has the best
powerplay in the league 4) Winnipeg who is suppose to be a Contender in the
Smythe 5) and last but not least Boston, which i know isn't much of a team
but, right Dennis . That means they defeated a team from every division.
Let's look at the other teams also.Detroit put an end to the Whalers
winning streak last week.Chicago defeated Winnipeg and should have beat the
Canadiens even though it ended in a tie. St. Louis held their own against
both Montreal and Quebec losing both by a goal and could have won either.
They did snap Toronto's winning streak so you know they must be a good team.
I can't remember what Minnesota did other that losing to Vancouver.OK, so
we lose some too but i'm not saying we don't.

Anyone disagree with any of my comments, although i can't see how
anyone could.

25.520 years is a long time58384::LATTUCANo Worries, MateWed Nov 11 1987 12:527

Bevan, teams in the Norris Division are really just one step ahead
of minor league hockey. They should implement a system like in
Europe, where the weakest team goes one level down, and the best
team in weaker league goes one level up. Then again maybe not,
you might never see the leafs again.

25.6THE LEAFS!! WHAT A SQUAD(HA!HA!)KAOA11::DMCCANNWed Nov 11 1987 15:3517
      HEY LLOYD(BEVAN),
THE LEAFS GO ON ONE OF THEIR YEARLY WINNING STREAKS (WOW) AND
THEY'RE WORLD BEATERS, ARE THEY? HOW LONG BEFORE TORONTO GOES ON
LET'S SAY A 7-8 GAME ROAD TRIP? I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THEIR RECORD
IS ON THE ROAD COMPARED TO PLAYING IN HAROLD'S HOUSE OF HORRORS. WITH
DEFENCEMEN LIKE KOTSOPOULUS AND LANZ AND FORWARDS LIKE SEMENKO AND ALLISON
AND THEIR HALF-PINT GOALTENDER, THEY'RE GONNA GO A LONG WAY( SARCASM,
SARCASM). ANYTIME YOU WANT TO BET I'LL PUT THE BEST TEAM FROM THE
ADAMS UP AGAINST THE BEST FROM THE "POROUS" ( IF YOU CAN FIND ONE
THERE ) AND WE'LL SEE WHAT HAPPENS. THE BRUINS ARE IN T.O. TONIGHT
BUT OF COURSE YOU KNEW THAT BECAUSE BIG, BAD WENDEL HAS DECIDED
THAT HE CAN'T PLAY. GET BROPHY TO GIVE HIM A SOOTHER AND NURSE HIM
BACK TO HEALTH, THE CHICKEN____ !!!!!

    BRUINS ALL THE WAY!!!

25.8The Toronto Make Beleafs!TRCA03::KEHOETue Nov 24 1987 16:207

I have lived in Toronto for the past seven years and have been
subjected to Leaf hockey for the same period of time. I would like
to thank the leafs and owner Harold Ballard for making me appreciate
real hockey! It's great to watch the HABS on TSN!

    Ron.
25.9Awfully Competitive NorrisKAOA01::GLOBRIENWed Dec 16 1987 17:558
Life's not easy as a Leafs fan. It can even cause delirious behaviour.
To mention Montreal, Boston, and the most competitive division in
hockey, and not mention the Adams Division is puzzling. Take a
look at the standings and the Norris is awfully competitive. But
the emphasis is on awful, not competitive. To compare a
    Toronto-Detroit game to a Montreal-Boston or Calgary-Edmonton game
is going beyond the requirements of a true fan. You just can't
appreciate a good game of hockey.
25.10what's wrong with this topic?58384::PAVEZKAon the road againFri Feb 05 1988 17:124
C'mon. Let's get this topic going again!

It's been 2 months since the last reply. Surely someone has something
    to comment on.
25.11The world is round after all58384::LATTUCANo Worries, MateFri Feb 05 1988 19:1014

Nothing is wrong with the Leafs. They have merrily gone to last
place in the norris division. The are now stirring some excitement
for the leaf fans with minnesota. Minnesota has made things a little
easier for the leafs, since the scored one goal during their
last 4 games. I'm sure it's going to be tooth and nail between these
    two teams for last place.

On the bigger scale of things the leafs are dead last in the entire
    league. That's 2!th place, bevan!!

But why should Ballard worry, he's still filling up the gardens
    with a no-name team.
25.12Toronto Who?TRCA03::KEHOEMon Feb 08 1988 11:4713
> But why should Ballard worry, he's still filling up the gardens
> with a no-name team.

Actually he is not. Harry just had a non sellout a little while
ago. Oh, btw the laughs once again pulled defeat from the jaws of
victory last night against Hartford. That keeps their record in
1988 to one victory and a few ties and a whole bunch of losses!

Harry also fired the GM. Now if can fire himself the coach and most
of the players (Wendel included) he would be doing something.

    Ron (go HABS go)
25.13The Leafs - what a jokeKAOO01::CREPINTue Feb 23 1988 15:1819
Harry is laughing all the way to the bank, and all
    at leafs fans expense.
Why should he bother spending extra money and get
some real hockey players when they fill up the
stands with loyal (suckers for punishment) fans.

On the other hand, fans in Montreal will not pay
to watch an incompetent team and that's why they
have a long history of winning. Serge Savard, as
well as all the other Habs GM's over the years,
was hired to run the team his way and to produce
a winner. Priorities are different in Toronto
because the fans seem to enjoy watching a loser.

Harry is now taking applications to fill the GM
position. Send your resume to: Toronto Maple Leafs,
Maple Leafs Garden, Toronto. Attention: Harold (Hound dog) Ballard.

    Les Canadiens sont la!
25.15And Now For Something Completely DifferentKAOM24::RICHARDSONHe who laughs bestWed Feb 24 1988 17:1625
Re 14.

The Montreal Canadiens organization is the greatest one that's ever
existed in professional sports. The Soviets love playing hockey in the Montreal
Forum because it is THE symbol of the great history of hockey. The Montreal
Canadiens have won more Stanley Cups than the New York Yankees have one a World
Series. The Montreal Canadiens have been a dominating force in the NHL decade
after decade and will continue to be because of the aura that surrounds their
very name!!! There is something magical about this team. When your at the Forum
watching them win you can feel the spirits of all the great players of the teams
history looking on and I'm certain the players of today can sense this too! When
a Canadien suits up for a game, he's not just putting on a jersey, he's putting
on the symbol of a living legend and he must live up to that legend or be sent
to an ordinary hockey team!
Let's face it Leaf Fans, the Magic's gone! A once great team has been
ruined by a man who loves MONEY more than HOCKEY. I have nothing against the
Toronto Maple Leafs but I do have something against fans who are jealous of the
level of greatness that the Montreal Canadiens have attained!
So I fart in YOUR general direction, you son of a silly person, your
mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries! Do not attempt a
silly reply or I will taunt you a second time.

	Supersilliously Yours,

		Glenn ;-)
25.18Why are Leafs fans cocky ????KAOO01::CREPINFri Feb 26 1988 18:1415
I think you got the phrase backwards. It should be:
"People who support a loser are losers themselves" taken from
Earl McRae's 1981 article entitled "The Toronto Argonauts aren't
awful because they're Argos. They're awful because they come
    from 'Loser City'."
And seven years later, nothing has changed (except for the Argos).

It's real nice to have a sentimental favorite but the person who
wrote note 25.17, should try and keep a grip on reality when
comparing the Leafs and Habs (at least when comparing the last 20
    years).

My my, it appears that we have a Montreal hater here. You are no doubt
refering to the choking Montreal Expos of '79 '80 '81. Yes they really choked,
and it seems they were choking on Cocaine. I believe the drug problem was a
big factor in keeping that team from winning big.
I sincerely hope that you're not a Blue Jay fan, they've had their
moments of choking I'd say........

By the way, if you don't have anything against the Montreal Canadiens,
then why do you call them the Hacks???

Yours in biased objectivity,

Sir Glenny Baby 8^)

Why do Leafs fans keep going back to the Gardens ?

Are the people who fill the stands really Leafs fans or
just sales people trying to get their clients drunk ?

Will we see a competent Toronto Maple Leafs in our
    lifetime ?
Can anyone answer these questions by remaining logical
    and realistic ?

    re .29

You're right, it doesn't seem fair at all that the Leafs will
make the playoffs and 2 teams in the Patrick division will not.
If those teams were in the Norris division, they would be battling
it out for second place. I think they should go back to the old
format of the five worst teams being eliminated and then have the
top teams playing the bottom teams. That way you could have, for
instance, the Canadiens and the Bruins in the final, which is
    impossible with the present system.
Oh well, at least my Habs are on an 8 game winning streak!!

    And now for word-association-football

25.31Time to rebuildKAOO01::CREPINMon Mar 07 1988 15:2527
Finally, a response that talks about hockey. I knew I
could provoke an intelligent response eventually.

I agree with almost everything you said about the Leafs
hockey team including the pathetic goalies and defence.
If history teaches us anything, we can see that most
hockey dynasties were built from the defence (except
for the Oilers). The Leafs have made every effort to
ensure that their defence remain the worst in the league.
Gary Nylund was the Leafs' first step in the right
direction but they screwed up again and lost him to
    Chicago.
As you said yourself, the Leafs' only hope is if
Harold buys the farm. Until then, the losing tradition
    continues.
I am a fan of good hockey first and I enjoy watching a
quality team. The Leafs have not fit into this category
in 20 years. They aren't even entertaining to watch.
I would compare taking in a Leafs game to watching
reruns of the 'Gong Show'. I apologize to the people out
there who like the 'Gong Show'.
All I am saying is that if the people of Toronto keep
supporting the Leafs the way they are, they are just
going to get more of what they see today. After all,
its good ratings that kept the 'Gong Show' on the air
    as long it did.

25.32NHL should expand in TOCORE::LATTUCAJe me souviensTue Mar 08 1988 15:518
Toronto metropolitan area is big enough to support 2 nhl franchises,
after all there are 3 in new york. This way people who wish to watch real
live hockey, without taking a drive to montreal, can see the new team. Some
expansion teams blossomed quite well and fast,ie. islanders, capitals.
Those who insist on watching the "make beliefs", there's a market out
there, can keep on doing so. The best of both worlds.

25.33Hamilton???KAOO01::CREPINWed Mar 09 1988 15:2910
Whatever happened to the franchise that Hamilton
was supposed to get ? They have been hungry to
get a franchise for years now.
The Leafs organization would have no choice but
to build a competitive hockey team if they wanted
    to keep their fans.

Maybe someday, there will be professional hockey
    in southern Ontario.

I heard that Semenko wasn't receiving much playing time anymore
since the hammering he took from Bob Probert about 6 weeks ago.
Brophy figured he was useless to the Leafs after that. Once his

Now, if you were a 'man', we could discuss this man-to-man. 8*}

But let's get back on topic - the Leafs are dead!
All of 'em!
Apparently, when they stepped onto the ice they noticed that there was
another team there too - the Leafs instantly died of fright. Ballard
had under-handedly told them that no-one would be playing against them,
so they thought they might have a fighting chance. Ballard knew that
the shock would kill them, and he would be rid of them - it worked!

Funeral arrangements have been cancelled due to a lack of interest.

Dean, there's also no doubt in my mind that things won't improve
until Harold bites the big one but i have to disagree with you on Brophy's
coaching abilties. There has to be a complete house cleaning from the owner,
coach and scouts.Any team that has had as many 1st,2nd and 3rd overall picks
in the last 20 years as Toronto has and still hasn't much on the parent
team and nothing on the farm must have something wrong. When they have
picked a half decent player, they usually don't let him develop and then
trade him away.(examples to name a few,Boschman,Poddubny,Caryle). Then if
you play well and want more money(another no no to Harry),you get traded
(2 good examples- Lanny for Wilf Paiement and Darryl). The next one to be
traded will probably be Vincent Damphousse, who NOMIND Brophy sat on the
bench for a good part of this year because he doesn't like French Canadians.
Damphousse can be a real good one if they just let him develop.
When the leafs hired Brophy i thought it was a mistake and the
more time goes by i KNOW it was ,although him and Harry make a good match.
Why they didn't go after a first rate coach(like maybe Kilrea or Carpenter
when he was fired by New Jersey) i'll never know.

Anyway,I guess again we'll have to salvage another horrible season
by thumpimg the "Dead Things" without Yzerman (sorry Pete i had to get a
shot in) twice this weekend to get into the playoffs and then put them
away when we get there.

OK, OK. The truce is over Bevan!!!!

You don't know how hard it has been for me to defend the Norris
division all year with a team like the Laffs in it. Seriously though,
I am scared of a series with the Wings against the Buds. For whatever
reason, Toronto's whole season revolves around how they do with
Detroit. Detroit though realizes, unlike Toronto, that just because
they would probably fill the rink (and the bank) if they were losers,
that they owe it to the fans to put a TEAM that has a reasonable
chance of winning on the ice. They should throw Ballard into
Millhaven again for fraud and grand larceny of the public.
I'll give Semenko credit. He's not a cementhead after all...he
does have an intelligent enuff mind to get the hell out of that
ridiculous situation. While we're on the subject of Semenko, to
your new pal Dean, the only way Semenko could get revenge on Probert
would be to jump him from behind (he's done that before). I realize
that Mr Brophy wants to get Bob and his 30 goals or so off the ice
but he should leave poor Davey alone. Hasn't he had enough punishment
already. Now that I think about it, first there was Wendel, then
Semenko...where are they now?...Hey that's the reason Frycer walked
out yesterday....Brophy wanted him to try to fight Probert.

What did Brophy say earlier in the year? Something like "We're
not that far from being a good team like Detroit" And Demers says
"I'd say 17 points is pretty far". Of course that differential
has changed a tiny bit (like 41 points).

Heard on the radio the other morning:

What do the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Montreal Expos, and Toronto Maple
    Leafs have in common?

    None of them play hockey!

That's it for now. You caught me off guard. Good luck to Toronto
this weekend. If they can pull it off, at least we'd get to see
the Wings on CBC instead of some second rate teams like the Hacks

I hope that Demers got back at Brophy for the 'choke' sign he was given

Maybe the Wings will wait next year until the first game with the Leafs in
Detroit before the "Norris Division Champions-1986-87" banner is raised to the
rafters of the Joe Louis.

Anyway, bring on the Oilers and that wimp Gretzky. if he whines that

I hope that you will be supporting the Norris rep the rest of the playoffs.

Well, well, I must say this morning I am pleasantly surprised. The
Leafs played a respectable game of hockey last night, I think thats
all we Leaf fans were asking for. Even if they had lost last night
in overtime, I would have been satisfied to see them go out with
a respectable showing in their last game. I wonder how they will
be received at the gardens, Sunday nights game will be hard to forget
for those fans in attendance. Even though the Leafs won last night
I still have to complain about the officiating. Fraser has got to
be the worst ref in the league, he is so inconsistent. From the
Leafs side the high stick on Olcyk drawing blood and no penalty
is crap, they have been calling that all year, regardless of intent.
He didn,t see it-lame, lame, lame- consult your linesmen, they can
also make the call for highsticking. In all fairness to Detroit
he was terrible for them as well. Letting things go then calling
a rash of penalties- no consistency what so ever. This is not sour
grapes- I'm elated- Leafs win, Bruins win, and the Hacks lose all
in one night! I must be dreaming.

    re .88

I agree with you about the referring. It should have been a penalty
against Detroit for drawing blood (it was an accident, but that
shouldn't matter). Fraser did miss a lot of calls both ways and
called others that i'd say were questionable. He sure likes to
call coincidental penalties. What really upset me was the call
he made behind Detroit's net for hooking Inachak (it was hooking
originally but it wasn't called then...not until a couple of seconds
later whan he took a dive). And if he could call that, how could
he not make the call with about 3 minutes left when Chabot and Klima
wwe going in on the 2 on 1 and Klima was hooked, held, interfered
whatever....no call. Now I know what the Bruin fans were complaining
    about Fraser on Sunday.

I give the Leafs credit...they didn't die....they made the most
of their chances...5 goals on 12 shots after the second. Wings
owned the third...they just couldn't get their stick on the puck
in front of the net after nice setups.

I'm worried about Detroit's goaltending though. Hanlon hasn't exactly
been himself in this series and Stefan shouldn't even be dressed
if his knee is bothering him that much. Olzcyk's overtime goal
was certainly stoppable but Stefan just can't move his right leg
    very good.

Looks like you guys have been busy the last three weeks.

I'm back just in time make a few closing comments about
the second most pathetic team in 1988.(who shouldn't be
    in the playoffs anyway)
We can finally turn on the T.V. and be sure of seeing
professionnal hockey. The Leafs are dead and will be
back next year with the same klutzes masquerading as
hockey players. It's nice to be optimistic but
' Get a grip on reality, Dean!!'. Can you honestly
look at the Leafs organization and expect to see
a competent hockey team within the next five years???

It's very discouraging being a Leafs fan, especially
when there is a very succesful organization in
Montreal who have a long history of winning (23 cups)
and are a serious contender again this year.
Jealousy is bound to set in and we can see it
demonstrated in this notes file as the ABM attitude.(also
    prominent in the Bruins conference)

Anyway, the Leafs are gone and we can look forward to
great hockey on CBC with the Bruins-Habs series.

What a stroke of luck that there was a power failure in Quebec tonight.
We didn't have to listen to Dick Irvin. I hear that the failure
was caused by a transformer that got knocked out by empty beer bottles
being thrown from people inside a 2-tone grey Astro van as it passed
through Montreal. It was last seen speeding towards the Ontario
border. Witnesses report hearing voices from inside the van saying

    re .104
Dean, if you really want to attack someone verbally, you should
at least know what you're talking about before mindlessly babbling
on. It seems to me that the last attack was provoked by me
saying that Leafs fans hate the Habs because they are winners. Right??
Leafs fans want a winning team. Right??
The Leafs are a disgrace. Right??

There are probably a lot of reasons why you hate the Habs, but the
main reason you hate them is because 'THEY WIN'. Right???
Now, pick up a dictionnary and read (assuming you can) the
    definition 'jealousy'.
If you can deny that you jealous of the Habs and their fans because
they win, you, my friend, are a boldfaced liar.

Before you start your next mindless attack, take a look at your
own statements regarding the Leafs. Phrases like: "Leafs are a
disgrace" and "I am sickened and frustrated" .60, "the present
Leafs team is second rate" .55, "Even die hard Leaf fans are
beginning to tire of the level of incompetence" .62, and
reply .64 about Frycer leaving: "another rat abandoning the very
quickly sinking S.S. Ballard". Are these the words of a loyal fan????

I have to agree with every one of your statements so don't attack
me. You have been doing most of the Leafs Bashing in this conference
and then attacking anyone who agrees with you.

Just for the record, I have been a Habs fan since birth but have
always been a hockey fan first. During the years when they were
awful, I was still a fan but would get frustrated watching the
incompetent play on the ice. At that time, I prefered watching
the N.Y. Islanders simply because they played the game better.
I was never a fan of theirs, but I respected the way they played
    and it was more entertaining.

Give your head a shake before you go shooting your mouth off
    again.

Oh, by the way, Habs make it 1-0 and play very well, thank you.

The buds doubled their winnings this year, with a come from behind 5-4
win over the equally useless North Stars. Intense booing filled the
Gardens during last night's match, especially when Leeman touched the
    puck.

They are booing because they expect more out of Leeman (50+ goal man
    and all).

I heard Dick Beddoes (reporter who follows the Leafs) on the radio
the other night and he says to expect Leeman to be traded soon. Leeman
also expects it. Apparently there is a big rift between Iafrate and
Leeman...they won't even talk to each other.

    Why you may ask??????......

Because Leeman is sleeping with Iafrate's wife (ex-wife?)

Toronto in 7 doesn't inspire complete confidence.

Montreal in 5, common sense prevails...

On one hand, it's been so painfully llloooonnnngggg since the Leafs
won the "big one" that it would almost be a collective national
relief to see them so it.

On the other hand, being a Habs fan since the days of Beliveau,
Richard (the Pocket Rocket), Cournoyer & company, I would much
prefer to see Nos Glorieux win the treasured cup for a record
    Nth time.

To the Leafs, and their patient and loyal fans, I say "Good Luck"
and I am sure it will be a great series. But first, get by L.A.
and put that series away, would ya!?!
