3.0. "Missing Toronto" by CAM2::KAMMIN () Fri Jun 26 1987 18:00

    I am a homesick consultant from Toronto currently contracting for
    Digital in the Boston area. I want to come back this summer. Does
    anyone know how VAX contractors are faring in the Toronto area.
    Also, is it true that the housing market has cooled down. Will
    probably be renting initially. Does anyone know if there are any
    decent apartments left for less than $2000 within Metro?

    	My guess is that the contractors are doing very well. This on
    	the basis on the number of deccies who have quit and set up
    	shop the last 6 months. As well there is a general shortage
    	of VAX people in town (Digital has had put on a massive effort
    	to get up to staff)

    	As to housing cost, they have cooled off (ie stop growing).

    	Markham semi 140-160k$

    RE: .1

    Not bad...taking into account the exchange rates, those prices
    aren't too bad, considering how big Toronto is. I think prices
    in NYC are higher than that, without the exchange rate.

    You're right. Toronto is still more reasonable than New York or
    Boston. We were in Vancouver a couple of months ago, and prices
    there seem to be much lower. You can still buy a 2-bedroom condo
    downtown for $150,000. Now, I just have to get a job there.

    (Born in New York, living in Boston, but Canadian and Toronto my
    real home).
3.4Not as high as Boston or San Francisco...ZENSNI::HOEWed Jul 01 1987 15:229
    My sister just started the process for a mortgage to build a house
    in Ottawa. I believe that the house was 179K$ Cdn plus somethng
    for the land. They don't have the tax write off for the interest
    and their interest floats. [Sister's mortgage is 10.75% for 6 years].

    Yet, this doesn't seem as high as Boston area or San Francisco bay
    area.

3.5Need a S/W spec?51336::LITBYPer-Olof Litby, SWAS/Services StockholmMon Jul 13 1987 10:379
	 re .1 -

	 Shortage of VAX people you say? Hmm, that sounds interesting. I
	 used to live in London, Ont a few years back. Loved Toronto - not
	 as great as Stockholm, mind you, but I would be interested in a S/W
	 job in the area. Any suggestions?

	 you should get your node database updated - those numerical
	 node names are no fun...

    My suggestion on a downtown one-bedroom apartment would be more
    in the $1000 range. Believe my, I've been looking. Add to that the
    "key money" scam and renting is a pain.

    Don't ask too many Deccies about rents in Toronto. They all own
    and live in the burbs. (will this get a reaction?).

    Doug.

You bet it will get a reaction. I live in the burbs and love it.
I'll even admit to having a bungalow, a fence, a dog, two cars and
almost 2 kids.

    Barbara Hall is the new mayor of Toronto. If memory serves, she
    garnered about 43% of the popular vote. Mel Lastman still rules
    North York. Frank Faubert is the new mayor of Scarborough, Frances
    Nunziata took York, Michael Prue took East York, and Doug Holyday
    is Etobicoke's mayor.
