1285.0. "MTU Question" by OTOOA::kap430.kao.dec.com::mbaker () Wed Mar 19 1997 13:55

Hi,

I have a problem using a BRouter when tranfering large packets out the Ethernet
port (> 1400bytes). The problem seems to be related to bad
timing on the router (after extensive testing i am pretty sure this is the probl
em). We'll get the router fixed so that is fine. However, I
do have the following question.

- I do know that we are suppose to use the same MTU for all device on the ethern
et. However, assuming all devices on the ethernet use 1500 as
the MTU, could I set the Brouter Ethernet port MTU to be < 1400 to avoid the pro
blem with the large packets ??? Is the MTU config on the
router used ONLY for outgoing packets ??? If it is the case then I think I could
 make it work until we get the router replaced. Can somebody
tell me if this is possible ?

Tx

1285.1MTU (IP only)OTOOA::kap430.kao.dec.com::mbakerThu Mar 20 1997 13:5714
Hi

Here is a response I have got from the Cisco newsgroup :

>You cannot change the mtu on an ethernet interface. You can change
>the protocol mtu (IP) and it is only used on output, but that doesn't
>help you for other protocols.

So I assume that if I use Ip only, this should be able to solve my problem temporarily.

    	Michel,

    Also be sure to see notes 1189/1251 for a possible ECO for a large packet
    corruption problem...
