551.11800 access to the US being withdrawnBEORN::16.184.3.149::BOWMANTue Feb 04 1997 13:1921
Because of forthcoming major changes to the DTN infrastructure in Europe and
between Europe and the US it will no longer be possible to pass through calls
from Europe to US 800 numbers, currently routed across the physical DTN. The
network changes will begin this month and are planned to be complete by 7
March.

For those who are not yet aware the European DTN network will be migrated to a
Virtual Private Network with an interim step during which DTN dialed calls will
be routed over the public switched network. As a general rule the PSTN does not
support the dialing of US domestic 800 numbers, (an exception is Switzerland
which permits this and charges as an ordinary international call).

Once DTN has been migrated to a VPN it _MIGHT_ be possible to carry these calls
and this will be investigated with the carriers responding to our RFP, but
don't hold your breath.

Mike

PS Rather than start a long discussion please mail me directly if you have
serious business requirements for freephone access to the US from Europe.

551.12European access to US TollfreeBEORN::16.184.3.76::BOWMANThu Mar 27 1997 12:3721
For those who are regretting (complaining about) the disappearance of
DTN 297-0800 to permit access to US Tollfree numbers please be aware that it is
now possible to dial these numbers over the public switched network from at
least two Euroepan countries, the calls are NOT tollfree of course.

From the UK just dial 001 800 xxx-xxxx, you will receive a spoken message
advising that this is not a free call.

From Switzerland dial 001 1 800 xxx-xxxx, it is also a toll call. Service is
referred to as "Paid 800".

There are probably other countries which now permit the dialling of US tollfree
numbers and I will post them as information comes in.

If you are calling from within a DIGITAL site you will need to add the
appropriate access digit for an outside line.

If any noters have knowledge of other countries providing access to US tollfree
services please add a response.

Mike
551.13More countriesBEORN::16.44.0.15::BOWMANFri Apr 04 1997 07:3416

We have confirmed that US 800/888 numbers can be reached, at a minimum, from
the following countries as paid calls:

Belgium, Italy, France, Switzerland, UK

It appears that it is not possible from Germany but this is being checked
again. (What a surprise!)

I'll update as and when we get more information but based on the above I expect
that most European countries are probably OK. In some cases specific access
codes are used and these can be obtained locally or drop me a mail for more
information. In ALL cases these are toll calls of course.

Mike
