903.0. "Something about RIP" by BEJVC::HUMPHREYTAN () Mon May 19 1997 04:14

    Hi,

I have a customer who has a critical requirement. They have two routers
in two different cities and connected by two leased lines, one is a DDN
and the other is a satellite channel. One router is a DECNIS 600 and
the other router is Routeabout Central. The routing protocol is RIP.
Because the delay of satellite channel is too long, They want use DDN
as the main channel and the satellite as a backup channel, i.e. when
the DDN is OK the two router use the DDN and when the DDN is in wrong
state the two router will shift to satellite.

Now all things is OK and I know RIP can do it well. But when the DDN
comes back to right state. RIP can not shift its load back to DDN,
Because they have the same hop counts or distance.

My question is: Are there any method to increase the hop count of
satellite channel? Are there any other skill based on RIP which can be
    used for such function?

    Any comment is appreciated,

    Humphrey

The ability to change the hop count on a RIP interface has been asked for
before in this conference. You could disable RIP on the SAT link and setup a
static (default) route over it and configure RIP to override static routes.

Or you could run OSPF over (just) those two links (OSPF has per-interface
costs) and import RIP routes into OSPF (and vice-versa) on both sides.

    Tony,

    Thanks,you are very helpful.

By the way, can anyone tell me how to set RIP override static route on
DECNIS 600? I can not find such option in configration menu and I also
    can not use NCL command.

    Thanks in advance,

    Humphrey

The DECNIS has a complete set of Route Propagation and Filtering controls which
allow each route to be assigned a preference. So you can either make all static
routes worse than RIP or else make some RIP routes better than the static ones.

You do this using the PROPAGATE DESTINATION and RECEIVE DESTINATION sub-entities
of the CONTROL PROTOCOL. This is documented in the DECNIS Management Guide (which
is available on the Web), checkout the documentation and if you still have
questions ask them in the DECNIS notes conference (and I'll answer them there :-).
