853.0. "90EI and Ascend Authentication problems" by MIPSBX::"KopelYouda@mail.dec.com" (Youda Kopel) Sun Apr 13 1997 23:55

Hi There ,

I know that this issue was discussed in note number 734. We here in Australia
have most ISPs using Ascend MAX4000 to accept connection from remote sites
using CHAP ( not PAP ) acroos ISDN.

I have attached the config of the 90EI and the EVENT LOG as well. I'll be very
greatfull if someone can point out the problem here.

In the Event LOG I see : PPP.026 : lcp req rslt: Configure Reject, opt 0, In
4,
nt 3 int PPP/1.........

The customer has turned off CHAP in the LCP options and put in the CHAP
IDs/PSSW
as shown in the configuration.

This info was given to the customer from Ascend :
Address Range : 203.61.81.1 thru 203.61.81.7
Netmask : 255.255.255.248
Login ID : ia043380
Password : hsi41d
Router ID : ia043380
Router ISDN interface : 203.61.81.1
Remote Chap Username : aonead1
Remote Chap Password : hsi41d
Local Chap Username : ia043380
Local Chap Password : hsi41d .

It is connecting to Ascend MAX4000 ( IP addr 203.12.181.137 ).
We really need to know how can we succesfully communicate with Ascend MAX4000.

Here are the CONFIG & EVENT LOG :

Here is the configuration

You appear to have configured Local/Remote ID/Passwords for PAP but
only a Local ID/Password for CHAP. You must configure a Remote
ID/Password for CHAP otherwise the RouteAbout will reject requests to use
CHAP from the remote end. (You do not need the ID'd/Passwords for PAP
if you are not using it).

Dear Neil ,

Many Thanks for your help......Make SENSE to configure the REMOTE CHAP as
well.

It would be nice to have a document that point out what is required in
configuring the 90EI for PAP/CHAP Authentication with Ascend MAX4000, over
ISDN. .

Cheers ,

Youda Kopel ,

Agreed. I have seen this issue raised twice before (see notes 793.3
and 734.9 for my responses). The next issue of the manuals should be
clearer on how to configure PAP/CHAP Authentication, but I don't expect
to go into specifics such as 90EI, Ascend MAX4000 etc. The principles
    should be common.

    Cheers
