781.0. "VLAN routing solution" by NETRIX::"eric.gan@bej.mts.dec.com" (ericgan) Wed Mar 05 1997 11:35

Hi,
What solution for VLAN routing in such env. by now:
more MS900s with VN EA connected with GS/ATM, and more
alpha servers with 350 Adapter connected with the same GS/ATM.
We created more than one VLANs (act as ELANs in EA and GS/ATM).
Do I only can use DECswitch 900 products to do the VLAN routing?

All reply will be appreciated.

DECswitch 900EF/EE with V2.0 routing code supports multi-protocol routing
over port-based VLANs.

IP routing on VNswitch platforms is due to ship later this year (summer time-
frame). Stay tuned to this conference for further announcements.

Does this answer your questions?

But how many VLANs does the DECswitch support? 6 Vlans?
Can I do multiple Vlans routing over multiple HUB900 chassis and GS/ATM
only via one DECswitch? Does this is the unique sulotion by now?

Thanks,
eric

>>>But how many VLANs does the DECswitch support? 6 Vlans?
You could configure 7 VLANs, one for each physical interface on an EF.
>>>Can I do multiple Vlans routing over multiple HUB900 chassis and GS/ATM
>>>only via one DECswitch?
Are you asking whether this version supports trunking across
modules in a hub? The DS900 brouter does not support trunking.
It is supported on the switch-only version of the DS900 I believe.
>>>Does this is the unique sulotion by now?
Could you please rephrase the question - I don't understand what
	you are asking.

	regards,

Hi bob,

Thanks for your reply.
What I want is:
9 HUB900 chassises with VN EA, all connecte to GS/ATM, and 4 alpha
4100 with 350 card and 2 SunNetra with 950L all connecte to GS/ATM,
then, I can create 4-8 ELANs in every ATM card(both 350 and 950L),
and, make these ELANs related to every VN EA's VLANs via GS/ATM backbone.
SOME OF THESE ELANS BE SHARED WITH SUN AND ALPHA. So, can I say I
get multiple VLANs who can share some same sources in Alpha and Sun??

Then, for this configuration, what VLAN routing sulotion we have?
I need a clearly answer and urgently.

Many thanks in advance,
eric

It seems your question is more about gigaswitch and LAN emulation than
    the DECswitch 900!

The only part of your question that directly relates to the "common
brouters" is about the EA. Are you asking if you can create a
    "extended VLAN" that would span:

        - ATM ports that connect to the Alphas and Suns (with ATM adapter
          cards, I guess?  Is that what a 350 is?);

        - ATM ports that connect to VNswitch 900 EAs;

        - Ethernet ports on the VNswitch 900 EAs?

I think part of the question is "how can I route between different
VSDs (VLANs)". It seems the suggested configuration has a number
of VSDs - each one mapping to a different ELAN on the ATM network.
Since there is no bridging reachability between different VSDs, a
router is needed to provide routing between them. We are not yet
shipping the IP routing capable VNswitch software, so in the short term
you could consider using a DECswitch 900EF running DRS code to
provide routing.

What you could do is to configure a different ethernet port into
each VSD and then attach each of these ethernets to a separate
port on the DECswitch 900. Then configure the DECswitch 900 to
run as a pure router - routing between each of its ethernets.
This would give you up to 6 separate ethernet routing interfaces
(plus 1 FDDI on an EF if you can use the FDDI). These 6 interfaces
could provide routing service for 6 different VSDs.

Be aware that the routing throughput will be constrained by the
aggregate throughput of the 900EF (around 14000 pps for IP ?)
which is much less than the possible throughput of the systems on the
ELANs. therefore, this would not make sense unless most of the traffic
does not require routing.

Also, be aware that we are currently working to resolve an issue
with duplicate MAC address handling on the VNswitch which affects
the ability to attach a DECnet router using phase IV addressing
to more than 1 VSD. If you are planning to use the router to route
DECnet phase IV then this is an issue for you.

Thank you,
BTW, the DECswitch 900EE can do same thing with route software, right?

Best Regards,
eric

Yes, you can use the DECswitch900EE with DRS code instead of the 900EF.
