9122.0. "Serial Console for Digital Unix 4.0" by ZPOVC::HWEETECK () Wed Mar 12 1997 01:40

    Hello,

     I have a situation which requires to use/manage a Alphastation 255
    via Serial console (vt100 type terminal). Alphastation will be remotely
    managed and is running Digital Unix 4.0. I've done "set console serial"
    at the console prompt, but it doesn't work. Serila console just hangs
    and is not enabled. I have also ensured CDE does not get started at
    boot time.

    I am sure am missiing something here, appreciate help.

    Thanks,
    Hwee Teck

Set console serial should work. I assume you have the terminal set
to 9600 baud, 8 bit and no parity? I assume you also did an init
after issuing the set console command?

9122.2Swap the serial portHELIX::SONTAKKEWed Mar 12 1997 15:496
    And assuming the AlphaStation has 2 serial ports in the back, you have
    connected to the "correct" one? If you connect to the wrong one,
    system will boot but after certain stage of booting, all the output
    will go to the "right" one making you think that system is hung.

9122.3Problem only when bootedZPOVC::HWEETECKWed Mar 12 1997 23:544
    I was able to see the console prompt at the terminal, but once I do a
    `boot`, the I'll lost the terminal.

    Replying .1 Terminal Settig --OK
    Replying .2 Physical Connection -- OK

    	Console prompt is available on the serial console. The problem comes
    when the `boot` command is issued.

    	Did I miss anything on SERIAL CONSOLE for DU 4.0?

    Thanks for help :-)

    This is because I connected the serial line to COMB port

    When I swapped the serial line to COMA port, I get the following :

    Thanx guys for those pointers. I have checked the physical connection
    again. Everything is right. It's just the console cable type which is
    giving problem.

9122.7Check console printer if presentCHOWDA::VARANESEMinding my A, B and CFri Mar 28 1997 13:4513
    I was looking for help here when I found my problem so here
    it is incase it can help someone else.

    After >>>SET CONSOLE SERIAL
    I could get no response from either the graphic device or the
    console VT330.

    	The problem was I had also hooked up a LA75 to the VT to get
    	a hard copy of the boot-up. The printer ran out of paper
    	and the boot process hung until it was serviced.

    	So check that any printer connected to a VT console
    	device is on-line and ready.
