8847.0. "DU3.2D1,TL8200,de500-XA, does not work in 100Mbps..." by QCAV01::NRHEGDE (T&E or R&D !?) Mon Feb 17 1997 10:47

    Hi !
    My customer is having tl8200 and de500-xa card on it. Os is DU3.2D1.
    Now the problem is this card does not work in 100Mbps. We tried
    following things as sugested.

     set ew*_mode fast and tried set ew*mode to fastfd also.
     from console mode

    ifconfig speed 100 and ifconfig speed 200 both tried.

    Now I don't have anything to try here.

    Can anybody give further suggestions on this?

     Thx & Regards

8847.1In what kind of configuration?SMURF::GILLUMKirt GillumMon Feb 17 1997 14:359

    What are you plugging the card into (repeater, switch, another
    machine)?

    If you're plugging into another machine (a point to point
    configuration), you're going to need a crossover cable.

8847.2We are connecting to cisco switch...QCAV01::NRHEGDET&E or R&D !?Tue Feb 18 1997 01:327
    HI !
     Thx for reply. We are connecting from de500-XA card to cisco
    switch. The switch works under 100Mbps. Other machines connected to
    switch also working in 100Mbps. All are connected using CAT5 cables.

     Thx & regards

    Switches are cool, but can require a bit of tinkering to get them to
    work. Run with ewa0_mode fastfd (or ifconfig tu0 speed 200)...

    Check the switch to see if it requires straight through or crossover
    cables. Then check your cable to make sure it's straight or crossover
    (really easy to do).

    Also, is the switch manageable? If so, check the configuration of the
    port that you're connecting to.

    I should have said, "Run with ewa0_mode fastfd (or ifconfig tu0 speed
    200) if the switch supports full duplex operation..."

8847.5switch supports full duplex. still no hope...QCAV01::NRHEGDET&E or R&D !?Wed Feb 19 1997 02:0615
    Hi Thx for reply.
      switch supports full duplex and the other machines connected to
    switch all works under 100Mbps full duplex. The same de500-xa card
    if connected to other machine give 100Mbps Full duplex mode.

     ifconfig tu2 speed 200 + ew*_mode fastfd are tried. But noluck.

     But on this machine It just works on 10Mbps. CAT5 cables are used and
    cables are okay.

     Any more things to try?

     regards

8847.6Too many unknowns...SMURF::GILLUMKirt GillumWed Feb 19 1997 16:3814

    Is the switch manageable? Is the port setup to run properly? Perhaps
    the port is configured to run at 10...

    Also, do you have more than one LAN interface on the system? If so,
    make sure they're in different subnets (otherwise IP won't use the
    second interface).

    Does the switch support autonegotiation (NWAY support)?

    I hate to ask this, but what does "The same de500-xa card if connected
    to other machine give 100Mbps Full duplex mode." mean? Does it mean
    that if you connect two machine together, the adapter works?

8847.7switch is manageable...QCAV02::NRHEGDET&E or R&D !?Thu Feb 20 1997 02:0938
    Hello !
     Thx for reply.

   > Is the switch manageable? Is the port setup to run properly? Perhaps
   > the port is configured to run at 10...

     Yes the switch is manageable. Port works in 100Mbps.

   > Also, do you have more than one LAN interface on the system? If so,
   > make sure they're in different subnets (otherwise IP won't use the
   > second interface).

     Yes we have two ethernet interfaces. And subneting is done. The
    controller which is giving problem is working in 10Mbs. IP is using
    that interface also.

   > Does the switch support autonegotiation (NWAY support)?

     Yes switch supports.

    > I hate to ask this, but what does "The same de500-xa card if connected

    > that if you connect two machine together, the adapter works?

     Okay. I am sorry for not being clear here. What I mean to say is this.

     I have put the same controller on to different machine and connected
    to
     same port of the switch. That point of time it works in 100Mbps. But
    in this turbolaser it does not work 100Mbps.

    For me it is a very crazy problem First ever seen. I don't know
    what to do.

    thx & regards

8847.8tlaser should workSMURF::GILLUMKirt GillumThu Feb 20 1997 19:2713

    Can't say that I've tried hooking up an DE500-XA to a autonegotiating
    switch... The DE500-XA does not autonegotiate, but the switch should
    settle to the DE500-XA's setting.

    What version of Digital UNIX is running on the machine where the
    DE500-XA works (not the tlaser, but the other one)? Or is the other
    machine running NT/VMS/WIN95?

    I believe that there are patches available for V3.2D1 (well, you could
    go to D2, for instance). Have you tried and patches? Also, V3.2G might
    be an option too...

8847.9It is V3.2D1 only on AS1000A...QCAV02::NRHEGDET&E or R&D !?Fri Feb 21 1997 02:0318

     The machine is AS1000A and runnning DU 3.2D1 itself.

     I checked in the patch kit also. But the patch is there on DU 3.2D-1
    for de500-AA problems not for DE500-XA. The other documents says
    DE500-XA shoud function properly.

8847.10SMURF::GILLUMKirt GillumFri Feb 21 1997 18:0611

    I can think of no good reason why 100BaseTX would fail on a tlaser, but
    work on a 1000A. Unless there's some electrical differences between
    the two...

    Maybe you have a bad slot on the tlaser, have you tried multiple PCI
    slots?

    Time to move this problem out of the notesconference. Better start
    getting resolution through normal support channels.
