9947.0. "RTE help for benchmark - please" by ADOV01::JARMAN () Tue May 27 1997 04:52

We have a need to simulate ~2000 interactive logins on an 8400 for a customer
benchmark - nothing complex - the customer merely wants to see 2000 incoming
telnet connections which (as they login) will run a copy of the benchmark code

Has anyone any thoughts/experience they could share? - especially on this many
users

As things stand, we have a pair of 4100's that we can use as load generators

It would seem practical to either use Tcl/Expect or the RTE referred to in
4251.9 (or maybe the RTE referred to in 3361.4??) to just create ~1000 per
4100 - given that all they have to do is login
and direct any output to /dev/null - all timing results are being handled by
the customer code running on the 8400

(and yes, I realise that by running all that timing stuff etc etc on the 8400
we are not really simulating the real user load, but the customer is insisting
(and treating the competition the same))

thanks for any thoughts

Contact one of the benchmark centers, see what they use and whether
they might be available for use elsewhere.

Once upon a time I had a benchmark center list, but it's pretty out of
    date now.

Well, the UK benchmarking centre is still here and so am I!

We have used PRTE, originally written by Ray Wallace, who has now moved
on to other things. I think the group that he was in is working on a
new tool that will run on NT.

The UK benchmark centre has also developed a new tool that runs on NT
and supports connections via Winsock so we can do Telnet and anything
else that connects using IP sockets eg SQLnet.

As you are in Australia - I'd be willing to fly out and help if you
    pay!!

	Well,

RTE written by Mr Jussi Maki is pretty easy and good tool, and
of course I'd be ready to help you on-site if needed ;-) Pointer
was in 4251.9 as you mentioned. We've tested 8000 scalability in
several cases with this tool, and I have seen IBM and HP using this
tool in their international benchmark centers.
