WEEKLY SKI REPORT.

15.00 hrs 19th February 1997

Next update Wednesday 26th February1997

CURRENT SITUATION:

Big Changes - all areas stormbound today - high winds and BLIZZARDS.

When the dust settles I expect the following situation:-

Nevis Range and Glencoe: Almost (or perhaps all) runs complete but
some lower ones possibily still thin. Lecht: All except one complete.
Glenshee: more runs should be complete after the recent snow - no
further information at present (area stormbound and roads closed).
Cairngorm. The M1 and possibly the White Lady and all other upper
runs should now be skiable - it is probably possible to ski back to
the car park but there is no access at present - the road and ski
area are closed off. The rest of the area should be greatly improved
but we cannot tell at the current time.

THE OUTLOOK:

It looks like westerly, northerly and northwesterly winds throughout
the next 4 - 5 days so the snow base should be gradually topped up.
looking much better for the rest of the season!

This is how things were a couple of days ago at Cairngorm and Aonach
    Mor.

Cairngorm surprisingly good, with everything open except the lower
Ciste gully, the Aonach and various linking tracks. And on Saturday
afternoon you could ski back to the day lodge. Didn't go on the White
Lady that day, but the moguls at the entrance looked to be giving
customers some cause for reflection. The West Wall was well covered, but
far from friendly, and someone who fell went about 100m down the hill.
It was a glorious, sunny, breezy late winter day and actually I wished
I was walking on the plateau rather than bashing the piste.

Aonach Mor a few days previously was not nearly so well provided. The
Goose was all covered, very hard packed at the top, excellent below
that. They opened Warrens - ice and hardpack. One of more of the Nid
routes opened later in the day, but to judge from the trouble it took
the one person I saw there to get down, it should have stayed closed.
The Coire Dubh was closed despite a notice saying there was good snow
in it. In fact the general signing and management was poor.

Elsewhere: the Lecht had no natural snow, Glenshee was said to be open
on the West side only, and Glencoe was reporting most runs open but
    no-one had seen it.

If there's one more good fall, I'd say Cairngorm would last till
    Easter.

    Mike,

Are you intending to ski Scotland again this year? I'd love to hear
what the new back corries in Nevis are like.

    Cheers,

    Greg
63.34Re Back corriesIOSG::MERCHANTWed Mar 19 1997 12:5213
    Hi Greg,

Might have gone after Easter again, but the snow cover still seems
    disappointing. Anyone know different?

Those who have been over say it's great, of course. But I think that in
the old days folk used only to go over (the cornice) when things were
great anyway! And since the new tows went on, there hasn't been much
use made. Sad but typical of 1990s weather.

Well, aren't they forecasting snow this week?
63.36EDIBUS::newdial_8.reo.dec.com::JOHNSONRichard Johnson , http://samedi.reo.dec.comFri Mar 21 1997 11:3910
Yes they have been forecasting it since last weekend.

I was in Cairngorm on a winter mountaineering course
last weekend. The pistes were thin and slushy, and only
skiable from mid station. No snow fell and very little
is predicted in the near future.

It does not look good.
