2614.0. "Lagging chars in WPS-PLUS" by OASS::BURNAMAN_B (And now, live, from Atlanta . . . ) Wed Apr 09 1997 19:36

    Greetings:

One of my more "difficult" customers just started allowing users
access to her ALL-IN-1 v 3.2 system via modem. These users are
now complaining that when in the WPS-PLUS editor, characters are
"lagging behind" what the user has typed. This does not occur in
any other area of ALL-IN-1 - screens paint quickly, etc.

I tried explaining to her that this is normal with this type of
connection, but she isn't buying it.

Customer is convinced that there are one or more SYSGEN parameters
that could be adjusted to overcome this problem. Are there?

    I checked TTY_BUF and TTY_TYPAHDSZ and they are 160 and 2000,
    respective.

    Any recommendations?

    Thanks in advance,
    Bruce in Atlanta

Make sure that the proper cables are being used for the VT, modem
and terminal servers involved. Make sure the terminal server
supports full end user functionality. Some terminal servers don't
provide XON/XOFF support. Some terminal server ports are designed
        only for printers.

Have them bring the VT into the office and connect it directly to
the terminal server and see if the lag goes away or not.

And of course, if they are using a terminal emulator, on a Digital
PC, an IPMT might be in order 8-)))

WPS-PLUS has always been slower than the rest of ALL-IN-1. It shows up
with SET HOST as well, although not as much today as say, 5 years ago.
I think the network is just better. I guess you could put a monitor on
the network and see what was being sent over the line.

I think it's something to do with the way that you have to set the
terminal line into single packet mode when using an editor, since the
host can't echo characters locally like it can when you're just typing
at the dollar prompt - E.g. an 'F' might be the second part of GOLD/F
    so can't be echoed.

Did they try any other editors, e.g. TPU or EDT? And how about using an
editor directly from DCL, is that any different? Even if Ben's right
and WPS-PLUS is worse at this than the other editors, it might take
some of the heat off us!!

re .3

Yes, I think Ben is right. WPS-PLUS seems to send a lot more 'traffic' to the
screen than other editors, so things appear to lag if you're on a busy or slow
link.
