188.0. "Any Super Beetle experts here?" by GAAS::KENNEDY () Fri May 09 1997 20:30

I'm looking at a 73 Super Beetle. It looks great except for the front
suspension carrier. I'm not that familiar with Super bug front ends. It
appears that the Mcphersion suspension mounts on a T shaped plate that
mounts to the chassis. The problem is that the bottom of the rear
portion of this mounting piece is completely rusted out.
Question 1: Is my analysis of the front suspension correct?
Question 2: Can this mount or carrier be replaced? How hard is it?
Question 3: What if I don't fix it? How dangerous is it?

By the way this is in the US is there a similar British model?
Here's hoping someone knows the answer

I checked with a neighbor who has a '71 Super Beetle and has worked on a few
others. He cautioned that you'll need to get a good look under the car
and see how much rust is around that plate. You may find you'll have to replace
more than just the plate to get it structurally sound again.

The task will be made easier if you have some sort of metal cutting tool
and a welder. If you have to pay someone to do the work, it might be worth
looking for another Bug.

He's also not sure if the parts you'll need are available aftermarket or if
you'll have to fabricate them. Again, if you have the tools, it's fairly
easy.

Where are you located in the US?
