3493.0. "DECCXX 5.6 beta?" by NETRIX::"moore@ozy.dec.com" (Stephen Moore) Sun Mar 16 1997 00:47

Hi,

Just wondering whether their will be a beta style release before the
forthcoming
5.6, which I believe is due approx mid year.

As I have expressed in previous notes several months ago I have a large (200K
lines)
server framework project built using C++ which makes extensive use of STL, my
own
templates, and the latest C++ standard features. I have developed it primarily

on NT VC++ 4.2 and ported it to DECCXX 5.5 which is the compiler my customer
is
using. Recently with the new release of VC++ 5.0 I have added namespace
support
for my project and attempted to port it from VC4.2 to 5.0. You might be glad
to know that VC5.0 is not without its problems, and it has taken me a week so
to figure out its bugs and continue the port (see C++ newsgroups for more
details, if interested). I estimate it should take me no more than another
week to finish it. Time I would have much rather spent doing something else.

(My customer now requires an NT release, so NT is no longer just a primary
development platform for me. Also, when you release 5.6 they will require a
release for this as well.)

Anyway, to cut a long story short and state the obvious the smoothest path for

me in future will be to port to DECCXX 5.6 as simply as possible. To this end
I am very keen to accept some sort of beta release and give as much feedback
as possible to help out in making 5.6 as sound as possible, or at the very
least know where its deficencies are, so I as well as others can benefit.

Could you please let me know if a beta release is forthcoming and approx when
you think it will be available. Alternatively if you can think of anything
else
that I could do to assist please let me know. For example, I would be willing
to provide you with a copy of my project that compiles on VC5.0 so you could
compare with 5.6.. ideas?

Again I'm very willing to spend some time with you and prevent the time
wasting
microsoft-style bugs I have seen lately.

Cheers
Steve

Steve,

Thanks for the input. I will bring it to
the attention of the DEC C++ project leader.
We will be adding support for namespaces
in V5.6 so we are interested in internal
or external field test sites we can give us
some testing in this area.
