In response to .4 (why are they still using v5.1?):

Sometimes software partners begin a port with a particular rev of a
compiler and they are reluctant to change compiler versions mid-stream
due to the impact on their QA testing and release schedules.
I have recommended to SDRC that they upgrade to v5.5 and they are
considering it. Thanks to Jeff for supplying some compelling reasons
to upgrade to v5.5 - these were passed on to SDRC. Thanks also for
your help in identifying the problem. SDRC appreciated the prompt
response and resolution to their problem.
