782.0. "New smoke-free, alcohol-free nightclub" by MEMIT1::SLAVIN () Wed Jun 29 1988 15:27

    A new smoke-free, alcohol-free night club is now open every
    Saturday night. It's called "On Broadway," and is located on
    880 Broadway in Somerville at a place called Cabot Farms.

    Although it doesn't serve alcohol, the club does offer Soho
    soda and sweets (chocolate orgasms!). There is a large dance
    floor and a DJ. There is also an area with tables, candles, and
    fresh flowers.

    People of all ages are welcome. Cover is $5.00.

    During the month of July, groups that make a table reservation for
    10 or more get a "fabulous celebration cake for free." Telephone
    number is 623-9532.

    ***Note: Since the club just opened in June, it hasn't been packed
    yet. As a matter of fact, I'm told there was *plenty* of room on the dance
    floor and at the tables last week. (I haven't been yet myself, as
    I've been out of town every Saturday night since it's opened.)

    The people that run it are beautiful, loving beings who see this
    effort as one of their contributions to making a positive difference
    on the planet.

    :)

782.2I would go!RANGLY::PUSHARD_MIKEWed Jun 29 1988 15:0611

     Lois,
       Sounds like a great place,wish we had the same here in Maine.It
    would be so nice to go enjoy yourself without being filled with
    smoke,and seeing people destroying their health with alcohol.I have
    had the same idea in the last year,but,i dont think it would be
    profitable,not enough support for it.

      Peace
      Michael

782.3Can this effort turn a profit?MEMIT1::SLAVINWed Jun 29 1988 16:1916
    Michael,

    It *is* a challenge to make a monetary profit from a club like this.
    Most nightclubs make theirs from alcohol. My friends figure they
    may have to wait awhile to turn a profit, but they are very willing
    to give this effort 100% and see what comes back in return.

    They are promoting it as widely as a small marketing/advertising will
    sustain. It will be interesting to see what kind of response they
    get.

    If you're ever visiting in this area, give me a call and let's go
    do some dancin'!

    :)

782.4Safe roads again!WITNES::DONAHUEWed Jun 29 1988 16:2320
    I think smoke and alcohol free night clubs are a wonderful idea!

    I'm not adverse to having a few drinks to relax. Drinking, smoking,
    etc. are a personal choice. I am adverse to having people drink
    who are out for the night and then try to drive after. Or people
    who spew smoke in the face of us non-smokers. It perils all our safety.

    Nightclubs like this one are great. You can enjoy yourself, dance,
    listen to music and go home knowing that everyone leaving the club
    is sober and fully capable of driving home. (Ok, so there are people
    out there who don't drive safely whether they drink or not.) 8-)

    People should be able to go out somewhere, have a great time. If
    they want to have a few drinks to relax, go home and enjoy the rest
    of the evening without driving.

    Oh, oh. I'm starting to preach! Forgive. 8-)

782.5Wow - what a great idea!SCOPE::PAINTERWed Jun 29 1988 17:238

    It sounds positively wonderful!

    Perhaps we should make a night out of it - hold a gathering there.

    Any takers?

    I'd be psyched to go (I'll be darned if I can find anyone to dance
    with around here - or anywhere to dance that isn't a meat market)...

782.8If we only lived closerMTBLUE::PUSHARD_MIKEWed Jun 29 1988 18:4814

    Hi all,

      If my wife and I lived in the area we would definately go!We also
    have some friends that would come.It is a start,i hope they can
    stay in it long enough to make it work.I live in a rural area a
    bit south of Bangor,Maine.I am a musician and i would say 90% of
    the people i see at the clubs either smoke or drink,but,i hope the
    idea catches on and i see a club up here some day.

      Peace
      Michael

782.9Franchises available -- maybe?MEMIT1::SLAVINWed Jun 29 1988 19:464
    Actually, Michael, the owners are hoping to go national (or even
    international) if/when this succeeds. Want the Maine branch? :D

      Lois,
        My wife and I would definately be interested.Would be quite
    a risk at this stage,due to the lack of people.However,our town
    is considered one of the fastest growing in Maine,and is centered
    between 2 larger cities.Keep me posted on how well they do.

        Peace
        Michael

    	I think you should post this magnificent idea in other
    	conferences such as FRIENDS, MUSIC, and the like.

    	(That is, if you haven't already!)

782.13Boston Globe article on New Age BusinessesMORGAN::SLAVINWed Jul 06 1988 16:2916
    The Tuesday, July 5, edition of the Boston Globe carried an article
    about New Age businesses in the Business section. It included On
    Broadway BUT neglected to mention that it is smoke- and alcohol-free.
    The article, on the whole, tended to focus on the more sensational
    aspects of New Age products and services (like flea collars containing
    crystals in them to repel the little insects; or a crystal dealer
    whose products "talk" to him and tell him whether they want to be
    sold or just hang around in the store for awhile).

    Sigh....

    This is a good time to use one of my favorite affirmations: "I can
    hardly wait to see what good will come from this."

    :)
    Lois
782.14Thanks for the input. Keep it coming!MORGAN::SLAVINWed Jul 06 1988 16:3510
    Thanks for the suggestion about posting in other conferences, Kim. Have
    done so in holistic, and will do so with FRIENDS and MUSIC.
    Any other suggestions, anyone?

    And to all who expresses an interest in a branch in your part of
    the Universe someday: thanks for the positive expression!

    Love,
    Lois
