483.0. ""It's All in the Playing"" by DEMOAX::OSBORN () Sun Sep 13 1987 20:31

    Although I don't agree with all her theories, I enjoyed reading
    Shirley Maclaine's latest book, "It's All in the Playing." It is
    an account of the events that took place while writing and creating
    the television miniseries of "Out on a Limb". Although there were
    some Supernatural events such as changing the weather, most of the
    book was an account of the interractions of people and Shirley's
    recounting of and analyzing the events taking place while working
    on the project. The crux of her current philosophy is probably
    best summed up in this statement from the book:

    "The way I look at it, this is all my dream. I'm making all of
    it happen--good and bad--and I have the choice of how I'll relate
    to it and what I'll do about it. What is the lesson in this? Perhaps
    we are all telling the truth--our truth as we see it. Perhaps everone
    has his own truth and truth as an objective reality doesn't exist."

    She was featuted on Phil Donohue this past Friday and I was impressed
    by her intelligence and ability to articulate and defend her ideas.
    It was interesting for me, because my daughter was watching with
    me and was surprised that the people in the audience didn't look
    like "new age types". This opened up a whle exchange for us around
    that subject. At any rate, I'd recommend the book for others to
    read.

483.1More Shirley (and more to come)PUZZLE::GUEST_TMPHOME, in spite of my ego!Tue Sep 15 1987 22:0313
         Sorry I'm not in time for you on the East Coast...
    Shirley will be on Good Morning, America tomorrow (Wednesday)
    morning in what TV Guide says is Part One. I understand she
    was quite good on the Donahue show last Friday.
         I just bought her book (today) but haven't had a chance
    to read it. I did, however, notice her acknowledgement to
    Lazaris at the beginning and she also mentions him beginning
    on page 18 (as I "promised" back in April or May in 358.)
         She's quite a woman!

483.2A rumor?NEXUS::MORGANWelcome to the Age of FlowersWed Sep 16 1987 04:493
    I understand that Shirley is going to build a meditation center in
    the Sangre De Christo mountains about 2 hours from Colorado Springs.
    Can anyone confirm or deny that rumor?
483.3Good morning come on.PUZZLE::GUEST_TMPHOME, in spite of my ego!Thu Sep 17 1987 04:5213
         The "Good Morning, America" interview this morning was
    a waste of time...Shirley was on only 2-3 minutes. Part two
    is scheduled for Friday morning.
         The good side is that KCRA (channel 3 in Sacramento) is airing
    the Donahue show with her that apparently was on most other network
    affiliates last Friday. (4 p.m., local time.) My VCR is already
    programmed for it! (Good for me, not so good for you...insert sad
    face here.)

    re: -.1 I heard that, too, but I know nothing about it.

    If anyone who taped the Donahue show would be willing to lend their
    tape to me, I would love to see it. Also, if the second session
    on Good Morning America is taped by anyone, I would love to borrow
    that too.

    I too love Shirley, her style of writing, her strong belief in her
    ideas, and the way which she obtained her knowledge (starting out
    as a skeptic and becoming both a believer and a teacher.) And the
    fact that she shared this entire learning process with the world
    is terrific!!!

    I also heard she was buiding a "spiritual learning center" of some
    sort, however I didn't hear the location. She says that the reason
    she charges so much for her seminars is because she is using the
    money to build this center. I will be interesed to see how much
    money she charges to attend the center.

483.5Sure thing, Shirl!PUZZLE::GUEST_TMPHOME, in spite of my ego!Fri Sep 18 1987 21:1719
        I watched the 2nd part (and taped it this morning.) It was
    somewhat better than the first part...not a whole lot there, however.
    (It was too short!) Among other things she said she enjoys the
    Shirley Maclaine jokes (such as: two salamanders were sitting on
    a rock and one turned to the other and said "I used to be Shirley
    Maclaine in a past lifetime," and the jokes mentioned on the Emmy
    show.)
        As for my taping of Donahue, the station aired a different show
    than what the tv guide said it would be...a lot has been pre-empted
    around here due to Pope John Paul II's visiting. (Nice man, too
    bad about his job, however.)
                       *****************
         Shirley does a good job in talking about creating your own
    reality in chapter two of her book, by the way. (I'm not finished
    yet but I am enjoying it.)

483.6They pre-empted here too!!NISYSG::STPIERREMon Sep 21 1987 16:125
    They did the same thing here too. They aired a different Donahue
    on Thursday and aired Shirley's on Friday. I plan to buy her new
    book very soon....I love her style of writing.

    I am just about finished with this book. I found it slow moving
    in parts, and entertaining overall. I particularly appreciated
    Shirley's being candid about the humanness of those working with
    channeling, and of herself. When she was being an a****le, she
    admitted it. It wasn't all love and light. Being an astrologer,
    I had fun noticing remarks and statements that beautifully fit
    her Taurus sun.
