803.0. "RELAX WITH INNER SELF" by TPVAX3::ROBBINS () Mon Jul 25 1988 15:35

         I had a very interesting soul awakening reading done for me
    last night. Of course I feel that I must act on what I've been
    told and instructed I do. In a nutshell I must learn to relax.
    When I asked how to do this the simple instrutions were to work
    on my inner self becuase that is where the problem lies. I have
    to make peace with myself and to go about this he gave examples
    like building my psyche up first thing in the morning etc.....
    He also instructed me on taking a bath at night with a tablespoon
    of sea salt added to help cleanse my body of all the negativity
    I allow to build on myself and to drink Raspberry Tea after letting
    it sit to help my inside to calm and relax. However he also told
    me meditation was not the key for me at this time. My question
    is does anyone have any other ideas to help to achieve this relaxed
    state and to make peace with the inner. He also told me I have
    a thing about sugar (which I do ) and told me to stop that because
    it only succeeds in hyping me up more. I just don't know exactly
    where or how to start. Of course I'll take all his suggestions
    and work on them but I was curious to know if anyone else has had
    to deal with this.

    Thanks.

803.1Music might be one way.BAGELS::BOROFFI'm a little bit scary but fun...Mon Jul 25 1988 17:2315
    Hi Kim,

    Try listening to soothing or spirtitual music. Some of the "new_age"
    electronic stuff is okay - a little mechanical for me personally. There are
    some really wonderful "natural" C.D.s ie., whale songs, ocean surf, rain
    forest. My favorite is Gegorian (sp?) chanting. 13th century monastic
    chanting - beautiful stuff! Check out TOWER records if your close to
    Boston.

    Since your advisor said not to meditate, simply sit quietly with
    no interruption and listen. If you are impatient, try only 10 min
    a day and work up from there.

    Let us know how it goes.

803.2check Holistics notes...and read some in this fileWRO8A::GUEST_TMPGoing HOME--as an AdventurerTue Jul 26 1988 01:3031
    re: .0

         You might also check out the HOLISTICS notesfile for other
    pointers. There are many ways in this physical reality of ours
    to relax these physical bodies we have. Some are apparently (at
    least in the consensus reality view) more harmful than others
    (e.g., drugs) or at least potentially more harmful. The bottom
    line (in my educated opinion) is that the mind controls the body
    and the mind is influenced (or, is "controlled") by our thoughts
    and our feelings (feelings=emotions here.) Another way to put it,
    perhaps, is that if you are completely self-loving you will not
    experience ailments, stress, pain, etc. Since most of us are *not*
    that, then we do. To that extent, we can work on those beliefs,
    attitudes, feelings, etc. to "release" or "alter" (transmute) them
    so that the end result is positive instead of negative. How? There
    are many, many good pointers throughout these notes that can give
    you clues, many of which are more appropriate for you than others...
    it could very well be that meditation is not as appropriate for
    you as some other methods (at this time.)
        As I am fairly heavily involved in massage, I have made it a
    point to be more aware, perhaps, (in the areas of stress) than others might
    be. What I attempt to do is to help my "client" relax the mind
    enough to relax the body. Sometimes it is difficult to tell which
    "comes first" but I can say that it is virtually impossible to relax
    the body if the mind isn't relaxed. So, you can start with the
    body, to "fool" the mind...ultimately the responsibility belongs
    to your mind...and in my understanding, your emotions are inseparably
    linked to your mind.

803.3Try this.HOCUS::RCOHENThere's no rush, just hurry up....Tue Jul 26 1988 11:2416
When I was younger I learned a very effective technique to enter a
state of total relaxation.

While lying down with legs slightly apart, arms at side, eyes closed, begin to
concentrate on the blood rushing through your toes. Really focus
on the energy provided by the travel of blood through the tip of your toes
and move your focus very slowly to the top half of your feet. Gradually
move your focus to the rest of your feet and begin to focus on your ankles
and lower leg. Really imagine the blood flowing and bringing energy to
to the parts of your body you have just focused on and slowly move up
your legs and to the rest of your body; by the time you move up to focus
on your neck and head, you should be really relaxed or even asleep.

     Jesus says: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden
    and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me;
    for I am meek and lowly in heart: AND YE SHALL FIND REST UNTO YOUR
    SOULS. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

    The way I try to relax is to turn everything off at home and have
    my home completely quiet then I just listen to the quiet. I also
    use breathing techniques. I will breath into the part of my body
    that I want to relax and I continue this until all of my body has
    relaxed.

803.7Some more ways..USAT05::KASPERLife is like a beanstalk, isn't it...Wed Jul 27 1988 02:4015
You could try some of the relaxation tapes (both audio and video) that
assist thru relaxing images and music. You may also try using a
guided meditation tape without actually allowing yourself to enter a
meditative state. They can be very relaxing. You may also use some of
your own visualization -- try sitting still and placing yourself in a
relaxing environment (ie. on the beach, in the mountains, flying, etc).

Frederick's advice about relaxing the mind is well taken. Relaxzation
*is* a state of mind.

    re: .6 and .7

         Thanks! I guess it took a decision on my part to leave (though
    I didn't say that to the guy who does the hiring) to get an offer
    to stay ;-}. So, I'm going to stay at DEC and attempt to
    simultaneously develop a massage practice (with a partner) in a
    hair salon in Los Altos (literally next to Palo Alto, Steve Kallis
    8*} .) I will be working 6-2 here (9-5 on the East Coast.) That
    means I can conceivably carry-on "Real-time" conversations with
    you all! Wow, wonders never cease!

          By the way, Meredith, is Kitaro in the tub with you and what
    does he have to say? ;-)

    getting a backrub while listening to soothing music by candlelight
