510.0. "Television Bulletin Board in Advance" by PUZZLE::GUEST_TMP (HOME, in spite of my ego!) Wed Sep 30 1987 22:45

After searching around the topics already in existence,
I decided to start a new one (although I've previously expressed
some distaste for new topics which aren't really new.) Well,
this isn't new, really, either, but I hope it gets used
STRICTLY AS A BULLETIN BOARD. The intent here is for people
to place new events appearing on television PRIOR to the known
time that the event is to take place. DISCUSSIONS about a program
can occur as separate topics, if desired/necessary...pointers can
still be placed in individual topics, too.
So, anyway, to start things off:

"Geraldo" (the tv show with Geraldo Rivera) is scheduled to
do a show concerned with Psychics on this coming Friday, October
    2, 1987.

Strictly as entertainment, probably, is a made-for-tv
movie airing Monday night on NBC titled "Haunted by Her Past"
[advertised as a supernatural thriller about a loving wife who's
turned into a capricious, wanton woman by the vengeful ghost of
    an 18th century murderess.]

510.2Beam me up, Scotty, there's no intelligent life...USFHSL::WETHERINGTONTue Oct 06 1987 17:0324
Great idea, Frederick! I wish we would have had this a couple of
weeks ago...the movie Starman was on not too long ago, and one of
the networks ran a slightly cut up version of Star Trek III last
Monday night because of the football strike...both very worthwhile
    movies.

Speaking of Star Trek, I watched the two hour movie that was the
debut of the new series, "Star Trek, the Next Generation", which
is the story of the new Enterprise 78 years into the future from
when the first series left off...interestingly, peace has been made
with the Klingon Empire, they are now allies of the Federation,
and there are even a couple on board as crew members. Also, a telepath
(a half-"Betazoid" woman; the Betazoids are a telepathic race) is
a member of the crew, her function is like the "ship's telepath",
so to speak; she sits right next to the captain on the bridge,
providing data to the captain about the "hidden nature", for lack of a
better way of putting it, of the things the ship encounters. The
series is in syndication nationwide, and the actual episodes will
begin October 10 here in Detroit on channel 50...I highly recommend
it....I was very favorably impressed with the pilot, it wasn't hoaky
at all, and it wasn't patronizing of the old series...Roddenberry
is the creative hand behind this one too...Great stuff!

in the THEBAY::STAR_TREK Conference. Press the KP7 or SELECT key
to add the Conference to your Notebook.

Incidentally, Troi is an *empath*, not a telepath, as she can
only read *emotions*, not thoughts. Apparently full-bred Betazoids
can read others' thoughts, but since Troi is only half Betazoid, this
    limits her mental powers.

    For the week to come:

(There are many movies this week dealing with horror, terror and
occult, science fiction, etc. probably due to Halloween. "Vertigo"
and the original "The Thing" are among them, at least in this area.
So, if this is something you enjoy, you should find some happiness
    this week.)

it isn't already more available than I am aware of.)

        Transcripts cost $3.00

       You can also call 1 (800) USA-TEXT
This phone number tells you that the charge is $2.50 more if
paying with Master Card or VISA, etc. and gives you an additional
phone number of (202) USA-TEXT. They imply that other television
shows have transcripts available from them, as well.

[Yesterday's GERALDO on UFO's was quite good, I thought. They
had a couple of people who claim to have been abducted and someone
who just wrote a book about that. It was convincing to me, but
maybe I'm not enough of a skeptic.]

Considering the attitudes and opinions of the people within this

following. It's about politics and the US space program (two of
my favorite topics! ;-) ). If you agree, then PLEASE call

A friend of mine who lacks net access asked that I post the following.
(Please don't ask *me* for more details, I don't have any.)

--------------
PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES TO DISCUSS SPACE ISSUES

Democratic presidential candidates will explain their positions on space policy
to the House Subcommittee on Space Science and Applications on Friday, December
18th in Iowa City, Iowa. The all-day hearings, to be held at the Iowa Memorial
Union, will also include testimony by prominent space scientists. Republican
candidates will be invited to speak at a similar event in New Hampshire
sometime in January.

EDITORIAL COMMENTS: Okay, these are all the facts I have now. We in the
Chicago chapter of the National Space Society are trying to find out more
details; when we do, I'll post them.

I've heard quite a few people express the wish that What To Do In Space could
be made a significant issue in the 1988 campaign. Clearly somebody on Capitol
Hill has had the same thought. If you share these feelings, you might tip
off your local press about this event and tell them you'd like to see it
covered.

There *might* be a chance for represenatives of citizens' groups, such as
the NSS and the Planetary Society, to testify-- we don't know yet. Note
that Iowa is the home turf of Dr. James Van Allen, the most prominent opponent
of the elaborate manned spaceflight programs NASA holds dear.

Frederick, an aside on the Asthma.

Often I don't have time to take off my shoes when an attack strikes,
so a fellow Digit and I have discovered a) to breathe the colour
orange in through our nostrils and take it into our lungs. This
is very good. and b) there is a pressure point at the base of the
throat between the collar bones - sort of in the hole there (when
you feel) and press firmly till the breathing eases.

In Sydney asthmatics are becoming more popular than new agers :^)

    re: Dale

I "suffered" from asthma as a child (until age 10-12 or so)
so I was interested when a few weeks ago Lazaris told us that asthma
was an indication of lack of deservability...that a child born with
asthma feels it doesn't even deserve to live so it "chokes" itself...

Could it be that taking off your shoes is causing others their
    asthma? :-)

The color orange seems a strange choice since it is associated
with the 2nd chakra which, as you probably know, is the chakra that
deals with pleasure (its the genital chakra.) On the other hand,
maybe it is appropriate since there is obviously NO pleasure during
    an asthma attack.

I have not run across the "hole" in the throat (5th chakra)
as a useful pressure point before...usually for congestion, the
two pressure points at either side of the collar bones (about
three inches from the center) are used.

Actually there are a few books on colour etc that mention asthma
and broncial problems use the colour orange. I had trouble with
this at first because of the 7 chakras. Normally I would have used
green or blue. But funnily enough, it does work.

Louise Hay also mentions unresolved guilt as a possible cause of
asthma. All I know is that since living in Sydney (eight years)
mine has become severe. Medication for the first time (about 4
years ago) and it is brought on by a change in weather. If the
pollution is hanging over the city, lookout. A cool change over
night, humidity, a strong wind suddenly blowing up. But I can have
a screaming match with my teenagers and nothing happens!!!

There are two books on accupressure, one suggests a point on the
hand and the second suggests the *hole* in the throat. As a temporary
measure, the hole works well, and so does the orange breathing.
But best of all is accupuncture, it has certainly halved the medication
and has proved very successful for some other asthmatics.

As another alternative are cell salts. There are some specific
salts to take depending on which type of asthma you might have.
These are also very effective especially for sinus sufferers.

    And thankyou, I will see to the foot problem :^}

The current "Mystery", a Miss Marple, story touches on the psychic,
though it ends up (still in the first part) with a "rational"
    explanation.

The beginning of the plot: a woman from New Zealand moves to England
with her husband. She is strongly attracted to an old house. She
seems to know what is behind various doors before she gets to them.
After she moves in and starts renovating she discovers that she
seems to just know how the house was before some changes were made
(she knows what wallpaper was in a particular room; she keeps trying
to walk through a wall to get to another room -- when she has a
door punched through the workman discover that there used to be
a door in that same place). The problem comes about, though, with
the front stairwell: she has a recurring sense of violent death
    there.

Sorry this is so late: I saw it Sunday night (first showing was
Thursday; this is a PBS show, for those who didn't know) but some
may still be able to catch repeat broadcasts of the first part.
I'm drawing a blank on the title, unfortunately. The Agatha Christy
story this was based on was published posthumously, and one review
quoted by Vincent Price (series "host") indicated that "Christy
saved her best for last." Can't really judge the story from half
of a television production, but I'm definitely going to see the
second half myself (but partly to see if it is as predictable as
it seems that it is -- well done in any case).

This movie strikes me as a pseudo-"quest for the Grail" allegory.
It also has some interesting illustrations of the relationship between
Good (Glinda the Witch of the North) and Evil (The Wicked Witch

that the actions of Evil are always turned around to some good

I could kick myself for not discovering this sooner as three parts
of the seven episodes have already aired, but here it is:

    "Myths and Heroes"

"The late Joseph Campbell was a renowned mythologist whose
insight into the range of human spiritual history was legendary.
Before he died, veteran journalist Bill Moyers did a series of
interviews with the master teacher that fully captured his ideas
on religion, psychology, art, literature, and culture."

Following is a list of episodes, three of which have obviously already
aired. These air in Detroit at 9pm Monday evenings on PBS; my dad
in Phoenix says he saw a different episode one night than I did
here, so the episodes may be staggered throughout the US.

I ***highly*** recommend each episode...the one I saw, "The Power
of Myth", kept me spellbound for the whole hour as it touched on
similarities between the world's major religions. Joseph Campbell
also has a book out called "Hero With a Thousand Faces", which is
next on my reading list. George Lucas is quoted as saying that
the book "changed my life"...according to a friend of mine.

(Guess there isn't much on tv that's metaphysical these days...)

Well, there is at least one. Coming up on Monday and Tuesday
there is an NBC movie starring Lindsay Wagner that deals with an
out-of-body fantasy. I don't know how "good" the movie is, but
it sounds like a little bit of fun. Incidentally, for those of
you who aren't aware of it, Lindsay is quite metaphysical/spiritual
herself. She cured herself of some very serious diseases using
    spirituality/diet.

Gilda Radner (Sat. Nite Live) is using meditation to control cervical
cancer and Dirk Benedict (A-Team/Battlestar Galactica) has done
something similar and has wrote a book about it.

I only watched about 30 minutes of each night's showing
and though I recorded it for future use, I'm not so sure this
was worth it (re .54). Last night the "seance" they portrayed was
so awful (as in bad) that I couldn't believe modern-day
cinematographers would do that. It was like something in
Poltergeist or one of those metaphysical "quality" shows similar.
Lindsay seemed "flat", too, not like some of the movies she has
made the past two years. Anybody else see this?

I missed Monday night's first half, but easily picked it up last
    night.

It was pretty terrible; from a movie-reviewer standpoint, the story
was weak, slightly soapy, and with the characters acting in a
    far-from-rational manner.

    Paranormally, it was a joke.

One point I'll put on the other side of a spoiler. However, I'll
add that when it re-airs, I for one don't plan to watch it. Three
stars out of ten; I thought better of Lindsay Wagner (who's still
    enjoyable to look at).

the corpse of her latest lover, carefully pushed through the skylight

    Just heard about the following:

The CBS network program, "48 Hours" will this week be devoted to
parapsychology. It is schedualed for broadcast at 8PM (I presume
EST) on Thursday, February 8, 1990. Featured will be current
research at FRNM (Foundation for Research on the Nature of Man --
the laboratory founded by J.G. Rhine after his retirement from Duke
University), some purported psychics (I have no more specific info
    than that) and Ray Hyman (Chair of CSICOP's parapsychology committee;
he is known in parapsychology circles as a moderate critic, which
still makes him, IMHO, somewhat of a fanatic -- quite willing to leave
out critical information which "might confuse people" (i.e., lead them
to question the absolute obviousness of his conclusions)). I have
very mixed feelings about reports such as this, since it is
ridiculously easy for the editors to project a wholy unfair picture in
either direction (an unfairly favorable report, in the long run, does
more harm than good to parapsychology, since its bias becomes a
    propoganda tool for the Scientismists).

I have a question. How long do you think the Scott Bakula
character (Sam) on QUANTUM LEAP will remain sane? I mean, not
only is he ping-ponging around into other bodies every few days,
but everytime he looks in the mirror he sees someone or something
other than what he remembers himself to look? Isn't there some
overlap between this character and the Ellen Barkin character
in the movie "Switch?" When Sam is in a woman's body, does he
feel excitement the same way a woman might? If he's in a chimp
body, does he desire sex as the chimp might?

    As an aside

One thing has struck me about the program Quantum Leap ... in all other
time travel related programs, a prime directive seems to be one of
non-interference i.e. the time traveller cannot interfere in any way
with events in the time period he travels to ... in Quantum Leap
however, Sam spends his time saving or changing peoples lives and
thus changing the course of history ... thus increasing the chances that
he never existed in the first place ... odd

It's not odd IMHO (in my honest opinion). He would have never
went into the past if it wasn't for the future ...thanks to the
past he already created by leaping about. (Did you follow my little
    circle?) ;^)

As for my theory of Sam's sanity... He "is" what he "is" and always will
be no matter what form his body takes. The only way I see him going
insane is by leaping about for the rest of his life which might cause
him to lose his sense of WHO he really is inside.

Just thought I'd put in my 2 cents...

    re: .68 (MIchelle)

Thanks for the thoughts...actually, what is interesting to
me is to see how this show somewhat dovetails into what I perceive
reality to really be. The biggest difference is that Sam keeps his
memory while "in reality" we don't (that is, each incarnation forgets
every other.) But the reason for that may very well be the
insanity that we've hinted at. In other words, if we incarnated
into a lifetime remembering every other, we'd go nuts! We wouldn't
be able to know which reality we were in ("where'd my house go, it
was here a minute ago...don't I know you from someplace?") ;-)
From the standpoint of the human mind, we'd be unable to process...
which therefore underscores a reason why we don't easily remember
    other lifetimes.
(From the Higher Self standpoint, however, since it is *not*
limited to a human mind, keeping all these "television shows" in
order is not too tough..."Easy as pie.")

The concept behind Nightmare Cafe is that it is a place where people (living
or dead) get a chance to relive a critical event in their lives. A place where
some higher power gives them a chance to "correct" their choices, or to
experience their worst nightmare. In the pilot, two people were both dead - she
from drowning, he from murder. In the first time through, she committed suicide,
but in the reliving, realized (with help from a friend) that she had other
choices (even though she drowned anyway when her nasty boyfriend pushed her in).
The guy was murdered for what he saw, both times, but ignored illegal activeties
the first time, and tried to prevent them the second time. He was the girl's
"friend" during her second run through.

At the end, the boyfriend, who was also the guy's boss, is subjected to the
Nightmare Cafe, and ends in prison, and the two "heroes" stay to be the "staff"
of the cafe.

It looked good, but it remains to be seen if they can keep up the quality for the
season(s). What they did with timelines was outrageous. Things that happened
during the girls future also happened during the replay of her past, etc. Real
twisted.

I suppose you could say the cafe is a place where people get their just desserts.
