1911.0. "Mirrors" by ART::COHEN (Life Imitates Art, so there!) Thu Jan 20 1994 00:09

Greetings!

I heard of a study that involved doctors and lawyers (all very left brain) as
the subjects. It seems they took these individuals and put them in front of a
mirror for two or three hours. Quite a large percentage of them told
researchers that during their time before the mirror they had experienced at
least one "visitation" of another "entity".

This was only hearsay, and I was wondering if anybody has heard of this study,
has had such experiences, or any comments on such phenomena. (That should open
this up to just about anybody, huh? ;-) )

The recent loss of a loved-one has started me thinking more seriously about
death and the seeming myriad of not-impossible implications of it.

			Thanks,

1911.1I read about it.. wasn't it Dr. Moody?DECWET::TPFRAMEjlg@halcyon.com - ZoeThu Jan 20 1994 06:1918
    I think this was with Dr. Moody? He's written about it. If I recall
    correctly, there had to be more than a simple look into the mirror..
    it entailed first a talk about who one wanted to meet with, why etc.
    then some meditation time on it -- then a room set up in a certain
    way, and finally a debriefing with Dr. Moody afterwords.

    It's based on some ancient rituals and beliefs (again I am hazy on
    the specifics). I suggest this not be done "unguided", as it is
    unpredictable.. Dr. Moody himself wanted to speak to one relative,
    and another one showed up instead ..

    	I hope you find what you seek. If you can, please
    	post your results of your experience if you follow
    	through..

    			Peace and Light,

    I have not heard of this study, but find it a fascinating subject. I do
    some work with a mirror .... one that I have cleansed in mugwort and
    charged by the full moon ... I have attuned it especially to me.

    Zoe? Do you happen to know what the name of any of his books or where I
    might find articles Dr. Moody has written??

    Blessed be,
    Serenity

    I'd guess that if you removed half of anyone's cerebral cortex and then
    forced them to look at their now lopsided head in a mirror for several
    hours that they would have all kinds of odd sensory aberrations and
    changes of self-identity perception.

    Was there a difference in the effect between the hemisherectomized
    professionals and people with a complete brain ?

1911.5On Dr Moody...ODIXIE::CAGLEFri Jan 21 1994 18:079
    I believe Dr Moody was discussed in earlier notes. The book that he
    was known for was Life After Death. He runs a psychic research center
    just over the Alabama state line (coming from Atlanta,Georgia). He's
    also been on local TV in Atlanta and some network broadcasts
    nationally.

    I'm not sure this is *quite* the same thing but I used to (when I was
    under ten) stare into the mirrior or reflection of window and be able
    to put myself into some type of trance. After getting into this trance
    I would then be able to leave my body and go into the reflection and
    spend some time in this parrallel (?) place.

    I call it parrallel because everthing and everone was as they were in
    reality (?) but there was always something that was off just enough to
    make it different and there were times that I could get things
    straightened out here (?) by straightening them out there(?).

    So any info on this study (even if it's not like my experience) I would
    find really interesting.

    re: .4,
    	Please excuse that ridiculous outburst on my part.
    	Don't know what got into me. In some twisted way deep in my
    	brain, it seemed funny at the time.

1911.8Mind distraction...ODIXIE::CAGLEWed Jan 26 1994 13:3110
    As a point of interest:

    When I read about Nostradamus he used a procedure of filling a bowl
    with water and staring into it. Eventually he would start having the
    visions. I believe that if crystal balls have any utility it is in the
    same way. They give the brain (mind) something to focus on while the
    awareness shifts to a higher level. The mirror would work the same
    way.

     Todd,

      I must admit I enjoyed your little tirade! I also must admit, that
    almost the same scenario was going through my mind, so I guess thet
    made it more enjoyable for me at the time. I just didn't have the guts
    to write it down! 8-)

1911.11"New Age" Magazine topicGLDOA::TREBILCOTTI can't believe it's only WednesdayWed Feb 02 1994 23:3614
    The article that talked about the study was in "New Age" magazine,
    although I forget which month. November, maybe? I subscribe but I
    loaned the issue out.

    Anyway, in the article he talks about how he (he being Dr. Moody) was
    inspired to do this after studying mirror gazing. He mentions a book
    where he got the idea from in this article. I will try and locate the
    article and put more detail here.

    I think it sounds interesting, but I wanted to read the book before
    trying his way.

1911.12Where's Mary Worth?GLDOA::VONIERI Brake for HallucinationsMon Feb 14 1994 17:366
    This is kind of off the track, but I remember when I was a kid the old
    story about Mary Worth. If you stared into a mirror and repeated "I
    believe in Marty Worth" 10 times, she would appear. Always heard very
    frightening stories about this so I never tried it.

    	She probably appears to tell you her name is not "Marty"! 8*)

    	(Sorry, I couldn't resist. I must have been influenced by Todd!)

    	I remember hearing this story also. It did make me wonder until
    	I found out that Mary Worth was an old comic character. I guess
    	it pays to investigate things.
