IT SOUNDS ALOT LIKE THE "AWARENESS TECHNIQUES" WHERE YOU NOT ONLY
HAVE OUT OF BODY EXPEIRIENCES BUT ALSO TRAVEL THRU SPACE AND TIME. THE
TECHNIQUE OUTLINES A PROCEDURE TO DO THIS AND TO PRACTICE IT UNTIL YOU
BECOME SO PROFICIENT YOU CAN DO IT AT WILL AT ANYTIME. I GAVE IT A COUPLE
OF HALF HEARTED TRIES BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. WHAT I FOUND VERY DIFFICULT WAS
SEEING THRU THE EYES OF MY ASTRAL BODY. DURING YOUR EXPEIRIENCE DID YOU
ACTUALLY SEE EVERYTHING IN THE ROOM ABOUT YOU AS IF YOU WERE REALLY UP
ABOVE YOUR BODY?

I'll go back and introduce myself in the WHO ARE YOU? note here, but I
wanted to comment on this one, because my experience with it is one
I'll never (ever!) forget. . .

Coincidentally, I was also into yoga and meditation at the time, and
living very "clean", for what that may be worth--no sugar, meat, alcohol,
and a minimum of "processed" foods.

One evening I "awoke" from a dream to find myself stuck halfway through
my bedroom wall. I panicked at first, then for some reason thought to
turn my head and look around. . .where my body was still on the bed,
under the comforter, looking quite peacefully asleep. I could also see
inside the wall (I had my husband help me remove some of the window the
next day so I could verify a strange rip in the insulation in the
wall--it was there)(maybe my toenails got it on the way through?--:-) )

Suddenly I was hit by a severe panic attack, I had the impression I
was hurtling along at an incredible rate of speed, I heard the velocity
more than felt it, if that makes any sense, and then a BIG BANG! and
I was back in bed (feeling like I forgot how to move. It took a while
to be able to get the arms and legs working again.)

Hasn't happened since then, but if it does, I want to try to stay
calm through the whole thing.

For what it's worth, Robert Monroe (author) has been doing OBE's since the
50's with no noticable ill effects. The OBE's (or the state leading to them)
have affected his physical (real) body in that he now cannot tolerate liquor
or drugs. He claims to have had the experience of coming out of anaesthesia
while still on the operating table, much to his doctor's concern and his own
distress at feeling the needle that the doctor was using to sew him up.

He has a new book out titled "Far Journeys" published by Doubleday in which
he details this and more. But that should probably be the topic of a new note.

For what it's worth, I'd like to relate the only experience I've
had that was possibly an OBE.

We had recently moved to an apartment in a 90-year-old two-family
house. The house, while I eventually became VERY attached to it,
affected my sleep patterns very badly. It was here that I had my
most frequent Hag in the Night dreams (see Note 107). They began
with a dream I still remember very strongly. In it I found myself
in our dining room wandering around in the dark looking at things.
The light level was correct for the time of night and phase of the
moon. As I wandered back into the kitchen, I suddenly became aware
that my method of locomotion was not normal--I couldn't feel any
weight or substance, and I seemed to be drifting above the ground.
When I tried to touch the counter and couldn't actually feel it,
I panicked and started to run for the bedroom, which was right off
the kitchen. I ran as if swimming underwater. When I came in the
door, I could see my sleeping husband and myself lying by his side.
I dove toward the bed, drifting over his body, then feeling myself
gaining substance and weight as I came down on my side. I opened
my eyes with a shudder. The strange thing was that my physical
body was not in the slightest disturbed--no pounding heart or
sweating, as happens when I awaken out of normal (?) nightmares.

I lay awake for a good hour trying to figure this out. I finally
got up and went into the kitchen and gazed at the stack of dishes
on the counter, all as I'd seen them in the "dream". Instead of
being excited I was terrified, and never told anyone about this
    for years.

22.7Monroe's early experiencesMILRAT::KEEFEFri May 09 1986 17:0288
Some people apparently are unable to stop or keep OBE's from happening.Such was
the case with Robert Monroe. His experiences were spontaneous and in spite of
everything he tried, would not go away. Someone I was talking with had voiced
alarm at the possibility of experiencing an OBE. So I offer the following
from Monroe's book, Journeys Out of the Body, excerpts from pages 19 - 28.

"The primary purposes for the release and publication of the material
contained here are (1) that through dissemination as widely as possible, some
other human being - perhaps just one - may be saved from the agony and terror
of trial and error in an area where there have been no concrete answers; that
he may have comfort in the knowledge that others have had the same
experiences; that he will recognize in himself the phenomenon and thus avoid
the trauma of psychotherapy, or at worst, mental breakdown and commitment to a
mental institution; and (2) that tomorrow or in the years to come, the formal,
accepted sciences of our culture will expand the horizons, concepts,
postulates, and research to open wide the avenues and doorways intimated
herein to the great enrichment of man's knowledge and understanding of himself
and his complete environment.
If one or both of these aims are served, whenever and wherever it may be,
this is sufficient reward indeed."
	.
	.
	.
"....I had just become prone when a beam or ray seemed to come out of the sky
to the north at about a 30 degree angle from the horizon. It was like being
struck by a warm light. Only this was daylight and no beam was visible, if
there truly was one.
I thought it _was_ sunlight at first, although this was impossible on the
north side of the house. The effect when the beam struck my entire body was to
cause it to shake violently or 'vibrate'. I was utterly powerless to move. It
was as if I were being held in a vise."
	.
	.
	.
" Without considering any consequences - not knowing there would be any - I
thought of the pleasure it (flying) would bring.
After a moment, I became aware of something pressing against my shoulder.
Half-curious, I reached back and up to feel what it was. My hand encountered a
smooth wall. I moved my hand along the wall the length of my arm and it
continued smooth and unbroken.
My senses fully alert, I tried to see in the dim light. It _was_ a wall,
and I was lying against it with my shoulder. I immediately reasoned that I had
gone to sleep and fallen out of bed. I had never done so before, but all sorts
of strange things were happening, and falling out of bed was quite possible.
Then I looked again. Something was wrong. This wall had no windows, no
furniture against it, no doors. It was not a wall in my bedroom. Yet somehow
it was familiar. Identification came instantly. It wasn't a wall, it was the
ceiling. I was floating against the ceiling, bouncing gently with any movement
I made. I rolled in the air, startled, and looked down. There were two figures
lying in the bed. To the right was my wife. Beside her was someone else. Both
seemed asleep.
This was a strange dream, I thought. I was curious. Whom would I dream to
be in bed with my wife? I looked more closely, and the shock was intense. "I"
was the someone on the bed!
My reaction was almost instantaneous. Here I was, there was my body. I was
dying, this was death, and I wasn't ready to die. Somehow the vibrations were
killing me. Desperately, like a diver, I swooped down to my body and dove in.
I then felt the bed and the covers, and when I opened my eyes, I was looking
at the room from the perspective of my bed.
What had happened? Had I truly almost died? My heart was beating rapidly,
but not unusually so. I moved my arms and legs. Everything seemed normal. The
vibrations had faded away. I got up and walked around the room, looked out the
window, smoked a cigarette.
It was a long time before I had the courage to return to bed, lie
down, and try to sleep. "

Monroe also described the following based on 589 experiments(experiences)
he recorded up to the point when wrote the book.

Symptoms Evident Per Cent of Total
(in successful experiments) (condition present)

Air hiss sound 45.2
Physical catalepsy 11.4
Vibration effect 30.2
Feeling of warmth 66.9
miscellaneous 33.8

"'Symptoms' must be examined from the evolutionary view. Physical catalepsy was
observed only in the early stages. This is also true of the vibration effect,
which noticeably evolved into the feeling of warmth and only occasionally was
perceived during the middle and later stages. The air hiss sound appeared
early in the experimentation and continued intermittently. "

22.8My First Hand EncounterCOMET2::LEVETTif I only had a brain...Tue Jul 15 1986 22:2745
As a first time noter to this conference let me tell you of an
experience that happened to me 6 or 7 years ago. I generally wouldn't
go off telling people about this but this conference seems like the place
if any.
I was working odd shifts here at DEC and had to be available after
every 12 hour burn-in cycle to cycle more drives. During one particular
week I was having dinner at 4pm then would sleep till 11pm when I would get
up and go to work till 3 or 4 in the morning, go back home, sleep some more
and arrive back at work at 9 or 10 in the morning. My bio-clock during this
period of time was all screwed up. It was during one of these nights that my
story unfolds. I remember in my sleep the feeling that I was being lifted
or floating above my bed. While in this state I "awoke". I could see around
the room, I could see into the living room and hear that "The Tonight Show"
theme was playing on the T.V., all while my body floated. I couldn't 'see'
myself because I couldn't 'move' thought the bed, window, closet, livingroom
were in plain sight. This sensation scared the poop out of me and I tried to
screaming a number of times (only partially successful). My wife came into the
room to see what the noise was...I saw her come into the room and ask me if I
was ok and while looking at her again tried to scream but only a loud snort
came out. Thinking that I was asleep she left the room and went to the bathroom.
This I also saw. As soon as she had turned the corner I regained all my
faculties and walked into the living room to question my wife. By this time
I felt fully awake. When my wife came back she was quite suprised to see
me up, fully awake and looking "like you've seen a ghost". I explained to
her what happened and asked her to tell me what she heard and saw. She said
that she came into the room after hearing me groan quite loudly and to see
if I was alright. What she saw was me "asleep", eyes closed, snoring.
Months later I was telling this story to my sister-in-law who told
me that it sounded like I had gone into the first stages of astral projection
and next time to go with the feeling and don't panic, try and control the
situation. Several months had passed when I found myself again with the
sensation that I was being lifted. Again, the objects in the room became
visible to me even though it was dark. This time I made an effort to relax
and "go with the feeling" and immediately felt my body rapidly rise toward the
ceiling and I paniced, "waking" in a sweat even though my perception of the
room, etc. stayed the same. This has not been repeated since. Was this in
fact the beginning of astral projecting or just a very clear dream? Other
things of this nature have happened to me and other members of my family in
the past and as soon as I find the right file enter my encounters. Are
some people more likely to have these experiences than others? Your
comments on my experience will be appreciated.

22.10SECOND TRY.."SOME PEOPLE WILL TRY ANYTHING"VOLGA::MACKAYWed Jul 23 1986 21:1951
I am a new noter so I hope this works...If anyone is wondering if
the reply on 22.9 was by mistake or by a wise-guy it was just another
    new noter....

I first heard of Astral Projection in 1974. After hearing about
it a few more times I decided to visit some libraries to find out
as much about the subject as I could. I found Robert Monroe to be
    one of the best authorities.

*I DO NOT RECOMMEND THAT ANYONE TRY TO SELF-INDUCE ASTRAL PROJECTION
WITHOUT FIRST HAVING A GREATER UNDERSTANDING AS OBTAINED FROM BOOKS
AUTHORED BY MONROE OR OTHER "EXPERTS".

In one of his books I found techniques to self-induce an astral
experience. One method was to meditate in order to get to an alpha
state of consciousness. Once relaxed sufficiently, concentrate on
the tips of your toes. Next, create an imaginary line extending
from a midpoint on your forehead (third eye) in a 90 degree angle
to about 1 1/2'. As you relax more, try to imagine the energy flow
from that point to the tips of the toes. Imagine the flow of energy
going back and forth more rapidly until it becomes a single line.
If everything happens correctly, you should be able to feel a tingling
feeling in your toes. Move the feeling upwards from toes to fingertips
and then to your forehead...At this point it is told that a person
who is capable of astral projecting might be able to sit up out
    of the body.

Well, some people will try anyhting! I believe that I was able to
get to the point where I got the tingling feeling in my fingertips
and that if I wanted I could've proceeded on an astral journey.
I chickened out at the last minute however. I have tried to duplicate
the "experiment" but had no results. In order for a theory to become
"scientific fact", an experiment must be able to be duplicated.

One other time, I felt as though I had an experience that was
involuntary, but the only thing I remember was a loud bang upon
coming back...I left my room and went out to ask my family if there
had been a loud noise and there hadn't been one.

Many people throughout history have recorded their beliefs in astral
projection. There are so many things that we don't understand in
the "non-physical" world. How much of it is imagination ? One thing
is for sure....in the future we will have a much greater understanding
of such phenomena and we may be able to find practical applications.

It sounds "to me" as though you did have an experience in astral
projection. You have to be the judge over your own beliefs. In this
controversial area, the experience of others may help you to form
an opinion. We all percieve our own realities.

This is a VERY BAD MIS-STATEMENT of Feynman's position, which can
be found in his own book "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynmen!"

"In our numerous discussions about hallucinations ... I had been
trying to explain...that the IMAGINATION (emphasis mine) that things
are real does not represent true REALITY (emphasis his). If you
see golden globes, or somehting, several times, and they talk to
you during your hallucinations and tellyou they are another
    intelligence, it doesn't MEAN (his) they're another intelligence;
it just means that yu have had this particular hallucination."

"I believe there's NOTHING (emphasis his) in hallucinations that
has anything to do with anything external to the internal psychological
state of the person who's got the hallucination."

The meaning of your original quote was that Feynman believes
out of body experiences do not violate physical laws. This is true!
He no more believes that out of body experiences violate physical
laws than he believes that dreaming you can fly violates physical
    laws.

The way in which he was being quotes made it sound like Feynman
believes that something *really* leaves your body during oobe's.
This is false. Feynman regards oobe's, hallucinations, and dreaming
    as similar.

So do I. I have experienced the sensation of dreaming I have woken
up and turned the light on. Its a weird feeling. But it is only
a dream, I did NOT get up, the things I saw when I "turned the light
on" were contributed by my memory, imagination, and lack of critical
analysis; not by the detection of objects that were really in the
    room.

The problem is that a quote taken out of context can be as dangerous
    as a broken bottle.

    Example:

Many years ago (before manned space flight) an aeromedical M.D.,
Dr. John Stapp, was doing acceleration/deceleration tests on a rocket
sled, using himself as a test subject [an ideal, if idealistic,
situation: who better than a trained medical observer could bring
back the best subjective data about the biomedical aspects of change-
of-velocity?]. He was ordered not to exceed certain accelerations,
    but he did so anyway.

He jokingly said at one point, something on the norder of, "The
test called for 5 gees. The acceleration I experienced seemed a
    lot different from that."

Some years later, when the late John W. Campbell, Jr. [of _Analog_]
was touting a so-called "antigravity" device called The Dean Drive
[it used a variable acceleration on rotating weights to produce
what was touted as "unidirectional motion," which supposedly imparted
reactionless acceleration <it didn't really, from the reports I
later read>]. He used the Stapp quote to "prove" that a
change-of-acceleration condition didn't follow classical physics.

So it's always a good idea to "lift up the hood" before taking a
quote of the sort at face value.

22.17OUT OF THE BODY?? WHERE? DID I GO????GERBIL::WOLLENFri Mar 06 1987 16:3025
Out Of Body??? But, Where Did I Go?
    ------------------------------------

A few years ago I experienced a strange thing as I went off to sleep.
In fact, I couldn't have been in bed for more than 10 minutes before
I was greeted by my grandmother who had been dead for years. She
didn't speak to me but gave me her hand and I went on a journey
with her. We seemed to have just walked through the skies with
ease and I could see beautiful green land and flowers, everywhere.
I also could smell things and it felt so good and peaceful. I don't
ever remember being anywhere in this world where I felt so calm
and happy. In fact I knew in the dream that I had left the earth
plane and didn't want to go back. Again, no words were said between
us. I was smelling the flowers, looking up at the sky, seeing just
beauty everywhere. I didn't want it to end. Suddenly, my grandmother
got very angry with me and she shouted to me in Greek that it was
time for me to leave, and I kept saying no, no, but she insisted
and I finally had to power to resist. I found myself electrically
extricated. My body was electrified and my heart started beating
fast and I woke up. I turned over and told my husband that I'd
left this world and was made to come back.

Any comments??? A psychic I spoke to years after this experience
told me that I had gone over but it was not time yet, and I was
    sent back??????
22.18I'm not afraid to go backMTBLUE::BRAZIER_BARBBABSThu Mar 19 1987 11:2317
I'll introduce myself in notes WHO ARE YOU as I am new to this file.

I had a similiar experience as 22.17 except my experience of leaving
my body (if you want to call it that) happened during a car accident
back in 1968. I saw myself in my car and my body was a bloody mess,
and I was scared at first when I realized I was floating above in
the air. Anyways, to make a long story short, I have never felt
such a peaceful feeling, I had no pain, I had no fears, no worries
and everything around me was very beautiful, very colorful. All
of a suddened I felt myself fall and I found myself sitting behind
the wheel of the car I was driving and then I felt so much pain
that I wanted to die. For a long time I was angry that I came back.
Since then I have been told that God didn't need me yet and I have
to remain on earth until he does. Others have told me that I was
    given a second chance.

22.19< MELODY::KELLEYPWed May 27 1987 03:2538
I had an experience with Astral Projection about 2 years ago.

One night I went to bed and drifted off to sleep. I felt very light
and a lifting sensation came over my body. I felt as though I were
traveling very fast. Suddenly, I was in front of a house with big
windows. I got in, but not through a door, I seemed to float through
the window with no problem. I then was looking the inside of this
house. The furniture was deep brown and the carpet beige. I went
up a few stairs and there was a kitchen. The appliances were copper
color and new. I saw a telephone on the wall it rang and I answered
or tried to answer it. The other party on the phone asked for someone
but I didn't know who, I thought they wanted my boyfriend but couldn't
    be sure.

I then went into the next room, I saw the most beautiful fireplace
I had ever seen. It was golden metal with ferns growing over it
in a box (planter). Above it was a mirror, I could barely see myself
in the mirror, all I remember is that I had no clothing on. I then
saw my boyfriend sitting in a chair next to the fireplace sleeping.
He awoke and didn't see me. I felt a sence of time to go, so to
speak. I returned to my home and heard a loud bang before I woke
    up.

I was extremely tired when I awoke. Like I had never slept at all.
But I remembered the (dream or so I thought at the time) in detail
and was excited to tell my boyfriend. Also, because of the fire
place and how beautiful one like that would look in our home.
When I told him of the dream, he just looked at me shocked. Then,
I described the fireplace to him and he said I never showed you
a picture of my house how did you know what it looked like? He
then told me that he had made that fireplace himself. I was terrified
and astonished at the same time. He then told me about Astral
Projection and got me some books about it.

I am still not certian of what really happened to me, but this sounds
    close.

22.20BASHER::ROSEMon Aug 10 1987 23:0247
I experienced Astral Projection about 4 years ago so if I sound a bit vague
about some of the details its because I don't remember.

I remember I was laying in bed asleep and woke up all of a sudden. I couldn't
quite work out at the time why I had woken up but then I opened my eyes and was
really shocked to see my "other self" hovering above the bed. I couldn't really
believe it. I had never heard of this sort of thing before and could only think
to myself "I must be dead". I was a bit concerned but stayed quite calm and
noticed that what I saw hovering above the bed was just like a mirror image of
myself. At the time my left arm was resting across my chest and my right arm
was resting by my side. The mirror image had its right arm across its chest and
it left arm by its side. It was naked (I noticed from one of the other notes
that their "other self" was also naked).

Just then I remember feeling sort of weightless and floating round from my self
on the bed into myself hovering. I had no sense of gravity, it just seemed as
if the natural thing to do was float (I don't know if you can understand that).
I drifted up in a circular motion (if you can imagine my hovering self was on
the opposite side of the circle and I drifted round following an imaginary line
not feeling any force dragging me back or pulling me up). Whilst I was in my
Hovering self I remember looking down at my self on the bed which was sleeping
(or seemed to be) with eyes closed and it was such a lovely relaxing feeling to
be floating (sort of weightless). I looked around the bedroom and could see all
of the furniture just as it was when I had gone to bed. At the time we lived in
a house close to a railway line and I think that a train passed by as I was
hovering. I then drifted back carrying on around the circle until I was back on
the bed and was looking up at my hovering self (still feeling relaxed) and then
I drifted up again. Just as I was looking down at myself again on the bed I got
a bit panicky and was suddenly back on the bed. I closed my eyes and was quite
frightened to open them in case I was still above the bed.

I did eventually get courage to open my eyes and I was incredibly relieved that
my hovering self had gone. My heart pounded for a short while until I calmed
myself down and drifted off to sleep. It was really strange. I felt as if there
had been a stranger in the room and I wanted to stay awake in case he came
back.

I never told anyone about it, I thought if I mentioned it to anyone they would
just laugh but within the last year I have spoken to several people about it.
One of my friends parents belongs to the Spiritualist Church and she told me
that it was quite a common occurrence. It is so nice to read here of some other
peoples experiences.

Maybe we can mail each other with our experiences if they happen again. I can

22.21The Only Way to FlyGLASS::PAGELFri Nov 13 1987 17:1313
I'm a new reader (today), and will later introduce myself in WHO
    ARE YOU.

I have been traveling by Astral Projection since childhood. It
wasn't until I was in college that I discovered that "not everybody
was doing it". Up until that time, it seemed perfectly natural.
The knowledge frightened me, and it took another couple of years
before I could feel comfortable with the "freedom of flight" again.

I imagine AP is quite common among children ... until they hear
often enough, "It was only a dream ...."

22.22An experienceFNYFS::PELLATTMon Nov 30 1987 16:0486
What follows below is an account of an experience I had just over a week ago -
the first part is, word for word, what I wrote down, very hurriedly,
immediately afterward and the second is further details that I have remembered
and that have emerged as the result of discussions since ( thanks to Cindy,
Carla and Mary ).

I believe I MAY have had similar experiences as a teenager but they never
occurred in a conscious state as this did.

Placing this in the glare of a notes file is not a decision I've taken lightly
but I feel I should share this experience. I'd be interested to see any
comments and especially to hear from anyone with a similar experience to relate
( mail me direct if you prefer ).

Happy Travelling, Dave.

****************************** START OF ACCOUNT ********************************

        6:37 a.m. Saturday 21st November 1987

                                This HAPPENED.

Got to bed late ( 1:30 ish ), could not sleep ( too much to eat, wind blowing
a gale ). Listened to music for about 90 minutes up to 6:00 a.m. Then lying
face down, maybe 6:15, visions started. Just like usual, very clear, NOT
ASLEEP, TOTALLY CONSCIOUS. Think the first couple were of members of U-2,
started coming thick and fast. Pictured a small child ( with a dog ) in
black and white, maybe from 60s or earlier from dress and hair etc.

THEN, visions rushing toward and past, body began to tingle ( not sure where
from first - think all of it ), sensation increased rapidly felt like my
skin was coming off !

Quite scary initially but initial anxiety overcome - I knew what was happening.
All of a sudden I was out and up near the top of the wall at the end of
the bed ! It was solid, round to another wall, back up to the first - I
was 'sleeping' down below ( did not actually look but could feel it ). "Why
can't I go through ?" Will myself to go through - it happens. Then the surprise
- I'm somewhere else. First a child's bedroom, there's a kid in a cot ( he
sees me ! ). Keep moving, don't know how to control it - not trying. A bedroom,
strange covers, look like suede on the bed. Into an office, two women, light
room, plants etc. One dressed in brown, only aware of the other.

I remember thinking "O.K. this is not a dream, where's my hands ?", "Do
I pinch myself" - "No, don't want it to stop"

Suddenly, there I am back on the pillow, can't believe it.

This lasted about 15 minutes, I guess about 6:15 - 6:30 a.m.

******************************* END OF ACCOUNT *********************************

Other details since remembered ;

The rushing sensation was confined to the visions in the few seconds just
prior to the event.

The child in the cot was a toddler ( maybe 1-2 years old and just on its
feet ) ; there was a blanket ( red I think ) draped over the top of the
cot. This room was all bright colours. No windows that I can recall. Room was
elongated and quite large ( by European standards ).

The bedroom was coloured mainly blue and had a floor length window "in one
corner". There were fitted cupboards one end.

The women in the office sat facing each other, desks were white and I think
there were terminals. A long corridor led straight into the office ( no
door or partition ). One wall was particularly bright - perhaps a window
out of an upper storey.

I felt no emotion toward any of the scenes. The initial apprehension was
instantaneous - there was nothing scary about the rest of the experience.

I went THROUGH each of the rooms, at different distances from the floor. The
closest sensation I can think of is snorkelling under water, facing forward and
looking from side to side as you move.

As this took about 15 minutes, and I was 'travelling' fairly fast, I believe
that there was much that is beyond recall.

I was in the same state of consciousness before, during and after the
experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Though I have never had an
out-of-body experience (that I'm aware of anyway :-)), a friend
of mine has had a couple and has described the same bodily sensation
that you did, occurring right before the actual oobe.

22.25Wanted -- metaphysical explanationMSTIME::RABKETue Dec 01 1987 18:2714

Can anyone out there shed some light on this. My significant other's
brother-in-law has been anxiously trying to find out where he has
met me before. I feel that I have met him in this life with this
body (not sure if we met before this life). He says that he often
has OBEs when he is sleeping & believes that he has met me there.
What I can't understand is that I have no recollection of meeting
him in the astral but do know that I met him.

I can explain this from a "normal" point - we met while doing something
mundane and can't remember the situation but remember the face.
What I'm looking for is a metaphysical explanation. Since I can
astral project on will, maybe I've been having OBEs without remembering
    them.

    Re: .25

It is my understanding that a lot of people have OBE's while sleeping
in which they have no recollections of the OBE experience.

I know that I have had OBE's at night, knew I had some sort of Astral
experience but not knowing what had occurred, met a person that
I had the OBE with in the physical plane, and not recollecting what had
happened until meeting the person in this plane. This has happened
    to me many times....

I have been told that a possible reason for not recollecting all
of our OBE's while sleeping is that, because they are generally
exhilerating experiences, we would have a difficult time dealing
with our day-to-day life if we remembered all of them.

was right after Seeing "Out On A Limb" and my experience was extremely
similar to the sequence. At first, while I was experiencing it I
was considering it just a dream from memory of the movie sequence,
except the surroundings on the ground once I exited the house was in
detail, my neighborhood. I mean I can visualize my neighborhood in
detail With an aerial perspective. Anyway I have since tried to
recreate the experience, but I am somehow apprehensive when I begin

22.34Monroe institute tapes?? any good??NOBOZO::POLTRACKMon Oct 02 1989 12:3516
I have received the information from the Monroe Institute in Virginia
about the hemi-sync process that is supposed to facilitate an OOBE. I'm always
a little suspicious of a product that promises everthing from inner-peace to
a better golf/tennis game (lose weight too!!). Has anyone tried these tapes?
Does listening to two different frequencies in each ear really produce a third
difference frequency that somehow promotes a sleep/wakefullness?

Somewhere I remember seeing these glasses that alternately flickered
in each eye producing a calming effect. Is the process similar? Thanks for any
input.

RE: .34 (John/)

    > Does listening to two different frequencies in each ear really
    > produce a third difference frequency that somehow promotes a sleep/
    > wakefullness?

My understanding is that MI does not provide any direct evidence for
the "heterodyne" frequency, except the apparent change of consciousness
in at least some properly trained and experienced people.

I am told that the thesis of hemisynch is neurologically implausible.
If two tones which differ by a small frequency are presented to the
two ears they sound will be heard to "warble" at a frequency roughly
equal to the difference of the two frequencies. This is an example
of a general principle called "heterodyning", which is, for example
used in some radio tuners. Unfortunately this combining effect seems
to be taking place at a very low neurological level. This means
that what the two hemispheres of the cortex (the "thinking part"
of the brain -- which is what we are presumably trying to affect)
"hear" will be basically identical to what would happen if the same
frequency with a warble were presented to both ears.

I don't know how firm this conclusion is since people presenting
"debunking" cases tend to overstate the degree to which concensus on
    technical issues have been reached.

That leaves the evidence of a real, profound shift in consciousness.
Unfortunately, people who have been properly "trained" and prepared
will experience a profound shift in consciousness from virtually any
stimulii they expect to produce such a shift. For many people it
takes very little preparation for this to occur. The MI has not,
apparently, done the kind of study which would eliminate this as
    a possibility.

So the evidence is not real good.

HOWEVER -- why don't you give it a try. Its unlikely to cause any
harm and if it works, who cares if it is because of suggestion or
    because their theories are right.

    As for the glasses ---

This is called "photic stimulation". Its real and it does work
(depending, of course, on what you want it to do).

There is a physical characteristic associated with certain states of
mind -- an EEG shows alot of overall brain activity occuring within
a particular range of frequencies known as the alpha band. A lot
of "pop psych" talks about "the alpha state", but this is probably
not a meaningful phrase. There are lots and lots of different
states of consciousness some of which are accompanied by an alpha
    wave pattern on an EEG.

Biofeedback on alpha waves tends to teach people to relax. The easiest
way for them to increase alpha waves is to "relax their mind" and
so they learn to relax by trying to increase the amount of alpha waves
    in their EEG.

Photic stimulation -- flashing a light in peoples eyes within the alpha
frequency band -- unquestionably produces alpha waves in people's EEG.
That may be all it does. It may be no more reasonable to expect photic
stimulation to produce a relaxed state of consciousness than to expect
making someone wet by pouring a bucket of water on them to produce
rain. Once again, suggestion makes the issue complicated.

The evidence I have seen would seem to indicate (but does not prove)
that photic stimulation *does* tend to produce or perhaps only
encourage a relaxed state. Relaxed states of mind are unquestionably
useful for some things, and are likely to be physically good for you.
Beyond that, there has been a lot of speculation and outright claims
    but little hard evidence.

I don't know anything, by the way, about advantages/disadvantages/-
differences in photic stimulation by alternating the eyes.

It is possible, though the evidence is weak, that "hemisynch" tapes
might produce a similar effect (though probably no different than if
you introduced the appropriate "warble" into a "single-track" sound).
Some kind of "relaxed state", however, is a far cry from the
extraordinary claims made by the MI.

22.36An OBE "ghost"DPDMAI::MILLERRThu Aug 29 1991 21:1439
I guess I'll start this note up again. It's hard to find the right
place to post things in here with all the varied and criss-crossed
    subjects....

Anyway, a few years ago we were telling ghost stories on a bus at night
on the way to a ski trip. One girl (who was in High School at the
time) talked about when she was 6 or 7 and the man who came into her
living room. It seems her bedroom was at the front of the house next
to the living room. She heard a sound in there late one night and kind
of sleepily went in to investigate. Sitting in a chair she saw her
neighbor - a big man with a beard who was always a scary figure to her.
She stopped in the doorway and he turned his head and looked straight
at her. Then he got up and started walking towards her. She screamed
and ran into her parents room. They told her she was dreaming. She
saw the man a few days later, so she decided she _must_ have been
    dreaming.

I asked her what he looked like and she said kind of hazy or glowing.
Then I asked if she could see anything behind him - on his neck or
back. When I did her eyes got very wide and she became very upset.
She _DID_ see something! It looked like he was attached to the chair
with a cord or string! She had completely forgotten that part until I
asked about it. She described the "classic" silvery glowing strand
attached to the man's astral body.

I told her about astral travel and the cases I'd heard about. It
seemed to really bother her that her neighbor had come to her house
that way. She couldn't imagine why he would, even in a dream.

I think my friend made a very good witness, due to the fact that she
had never heard of this phenomenon (how many high school kids have?)
and that she described his "astral cord" to me exactly with just a
    hint from me.

Have any other noters personally come across things like this? I've
had feelings of a "presence" in the room with me before (no idea what
    kind) but never anything _visible_.

    - Russ.

On behalf of those who took part in the recent vote which established
"alt.out-of-body" as the name of choice for the discussion of out-of-
body experiences, I'd like to welcome those who may have just seen the
message from their news system announcing the creation of this news-
group.

While I don't have time at present to write anything like a formal
charter for the newsgroup, and I'm sure I'm not the right person any-
way (I conducted the vote and issued the control message which estab-
lished the newsgroup), I'd like to at least say what the newsgroup is
for, since you may be wondering.

"Out-of-body" experiences are reported by some people who have a sense
of having visual and (sometimes, I think) auditory experiences from a
perspective other than that of seeing through their physical eyes or
hearing through their physical ears. There is a sense of being in a
body - of the same size and shape as the physical body, but that body
is not of a fleshly nature. In fact, often the experience starts with
an experience of seeing one's own physical body from a short distance
away, and feeling some connection to that body (the literature on the
subject talks, in fact, about there being a kind of umbilical cord
connection, with the attachment being at the back of the head of the
non-physical body). Those who have the experience (I am not one, BTW)
report being able to exercise a degree of control over this non-corporeal
body, being able to reach out and touch things, or to reach through
physical objects, yet to feel substantial objects with a sense of touch.
There is often also control in the sense of being able to move from one
place to another, often with the sense of flying, but also in some cases
with a sense of being able to just will oneself to a place of one's
choosing without having to cover the intervening distance.

It seems that typically, an out-of-body experience is achieved from a
sleeping state, but some reports indicate that it is possible to go
into the state directly from waking consciousness, leaving the physical
consciousness in a trance-like state, I would assume.

From recent postings to the alt.oobe newsgroup, which has existed since
22 July, when I hastily created it without giving much thought to the
issue of whether that name would be a good one, there may be techniques
that one who has not spontaneously had the experience can learn and
practice which can help one to achieve the experience. I expect that a
good deal of the discussion, at least initially, will be on this topic.

Personally, I am interested in gaining a better understanding of what
such experiences might have to tell us about ourselves, and what kinds
of creatures we are, rather than merely looking at this phenomenon as
something akin to a sport like scuba-diving or hang-gliding. :-) I
would hope that at least some participants in the discussion might be
interested in a more systematic exploration of the subject, including an
examination of the world's literature for references to such phenomena,
and that we might attempt to look for some common understandings of what
we either learn about in an academic way or in a direct experiential
manner. I hope that we can compile a bibliography on the subject, and
that we might even conduct some discussions of particular books and
articles.

In any event, I'd like to welcome all the newcomers to alt.out-of-body,
and to repeat the suggestion I made recently in the still-extant alt.oobe
(which will be phased out once alt.out-of-body is securely established
throughout net-land) that all articles sent to alt.out-of-body be cross-
posted to alt.oobe during this transitional period, which will probably
last several weeks at least.

I'll be looking forward to getting to know some new people, and that we
might even get some understandings which help us all to see ourselves as
"new people," in a sense.

22.38After SophieKERNEL::VOLPIGThu Oct 08 1992 12:0250
Hi,I think I've had an oobe too. The story behind it is a bit
    convoluted, but basically here goes...

My friend Sophie and I were teaching English in Japan and also doing a
little bit of moonlighting in a karaoke bar. After nine months of being
the only westerners in this little town, Sophie and I were more like
sisters and we planned to travel back to the UK via Korea, India etc.
Two weeks before we were due to leave Sophie disappeared and her body
was found 6 days later in a ditch - murdered. I did not leave at the
time we had planned because everything was really awful and I couldn't
go without knowing what had happened to her. They never found out.
Case was closed unsolved and death was "accidental": Japan's yakusa
had alot to do with it but thats another story.

About 3 days after she originally went missing, I felt/saw her spirit
leave this earth. I cannot effectively discribe it - it was like a
movement of light. When they found her, she had indeed died on that
    specific day.

Sophie came back to "visit" - I heard her voice and felt her hand touch
my arm - she said my name and she was almost crying. I felt as if I
had had a religious cleansing experience and I remember crying with a
release and ending up with a wonderful peaceful feeling.

Now, about 3 weeks later, I was sleeping (well, I wasn't sleeping, I
was awake in my mind, but could not move or even open my eyes) in my
room. I felt thunderous vibrations and could hear a great rumbling
sound. I thought it was an earthquake - Japan has so many minor ones.
At the same time as this rational thought was occuring, I felt myself
lift off my bed. The vibrations were so strong and my whole body (?)
was shaking violently, sweeping from side to side in a rocking
movement. I could not see anything, only feel, but I knew it wasn't my
    physical body.

Fear, as it often does, took hold and I remember being terrified and
wanting to scream, but the vibrations were shaking me so much.

I woke, after hearing myself hit the bed - the big bang mentioned by
    others ?

Anyway, I still thought/hoped it was an earthquake....but no one else I
spoke to had felt anything, so then I thought alot about it and started
remembering dreams and experiences I had had all my life...I seemed to
have gone flying about quite abit !!

Since Sophie's death, I have been much more aware of a spirituality in
myself, I would love to learn a bit more... anyone in the uk have any
    hints ?

    Gianna.

side, lifting off the bed. They really terrified me and I would do
everything I could to "fight" them. Wish I had known then what I know now.

Be careful what you ask of UK'ers in this conference. Luckily you have

ridicule, due a similar experience of his. You may want to search for

Basically, the Japanese version of the Mafia (a bit more complicated

marilyn, Yakusa are often likened to the Italian Mafia, however, there
is one fundamental difference : Mafia is one body, Yakusa are small
groups, warring against each other for control over areas. Similar in
activities to Mafia, certainly, but they are basically still old
    Samurai and Ronin gangs.

    HI,
Can anybody give me some more information relating to how you can
create an OOBE. Lots of people I've spoken to have had an OOBE but
have never had to go through all the before mentioned steps to create
one. They just go to sleep at night and suddenly they're in the air
looking down on people and places, they also dont remember going
back into their body, they just wake up in the morning as normal, but
feeling exhausted. I would like to experience this feeling but don't
    know how to create it.

by enducing the body into extreme states of being we can achieve

I suggest you read ' Far Journeys' by Robert Munroe.

It works by waking up through the night and trying to keep a part
of the dream state you have just been in.
I suppose after an extra hot madras you would wake up a couple of

I have had one OOBE. The method of achieving it was very simple. I got
as close to dying as you can get and still make the return journey. As
recovery from this was a bit painful and prolonged, I cannot really
advise it for recreational purposes. It was also rather unsettling.

Scottish Witta - author forgotton at moment but will look it up later

    [Out of Body Experience]

"To ride the wind" is an expression used by the Picts when talking
of what is more generally known as astral projection. This is a practice
used by the PectiWita and effectively taught by Aidan Breac.

The body has an invisible double known variously as the 'ethereal body' or
'astral body'. It is an exact duplicate of its physical counterpart though
there are occasions when it may temporarily change its shape. This body can
separate from the physical body when it is at rest - when you are asleep or
in a trance state. By training yourself, through practice, you can separate
at will and travel wherever you wish. When your astral body returns, and
you awake, you can have full remembrance of where your etheric double
traveled. Many people do this traveling without realising it. What they
remember of their astral journeys they think are simply dreams!

Aidan Breac's method of training is quite simple. It is based on the
(light) trance method and can be done almost anywhere at any time.

Lie in the most comfortable position you can: on your back or side, it
doesn't matter so long as you know you can lie that way for at least twenty
minutes or so. You should be well rested, so there is no fear of you simply
falling asleep. Many Pictish Witches do this in the early morning, when
they have already had a good night's sleep.

You need to obtain that hazy borderline between being awake and being
asleep. With your eyes closed, breathe deeply and gradually relax your
whole body. A good way to do this is to go through a 'checklist': start
with your feet and concentrate on relaxing them. Then feel the relaxation
move up to your ankles and lower legs. Concentrate and make them relax.
Fell all the muscles relaxing; all the tension and tiredness flowing out of
them. Move that on up to the upper legs and feel them relax. Work next on
the lower torso. Feel the stomach muscles relaxing. Geel your lower back
relaxing. Make it happen that you sink down into a wonderful, comfortable
sense of ease.

Continue through with the rest of your body: upper torso, fingers, hands,
arms, shoulders, neck, head. Get every single part of you to totally relax
and feel at ease.

When all of your body has been covered in this way, and you are completely
at ease, then - with your eyes still closed - start to think of your
surroundings. The spot where you lay; the nearby rocks and trees; the slope
down to the burn; the trees on the far side. If you are indoors, think of
the settee where you lay; the coffee table; chairs; pictures on the walls.
See everything around you, even though your eyes are closed.

The first few times you do this you may not be able to fill in everything.
Don't worry; keep practicing. Suddenly you will realise that you are not
just imagining ... you are actually looking at these things!

At this stage, or even slightly before, you may feel a starnge sensation: a
numbness that starts at the feet and gradually moves up through your whole
body. This sensation is actually the separation of your astral body from
your physical body. You will find that you have absolutely no wish
whatsoever to move. You will be content to lie still. You may think to
yourself that, if you really wanted to, you could move an arm or a leg ...
but you just can't be bothered! All that is necessary now is to will your
astral body to separate completely; to move up and out of your physical
body. You will find that indeed you do move out. You will be able to stand
up alongside your sleeping physical body.

It sometimes happens that, as you lie there relaxed and breathing deeply,
you will get a sudden feeling that your eyes are rolling backwards. It is
almost as though you are looking up and backwards into your own brain;
towards the pineal gland. You may then get the sensation of rushing
upwards, towards the top of your head, until suddenly you find yourself
standing, calmly and in peace, beside your own self. This is known as
Exiting by the Pineal Door. Occasionally this is accompanied by what seems
like a shaking and shuddering. It doesn't happen often but don't be afraid
if it does.

Should you ever be in a state of partial release - half in your body and
half out - don't worry. You may lift your astral arms but feel the rest of
you is tied down! Just relax and tell yourself that is your upper body is
ready there's no reason why the rest shouldn't be. You should slip out
quite easily then.

Very probably when you first leave your body you will experience dual
consciousness. You will feel yourself in your astral body, standing up, but
at the same time you will feel yourself in your physical body, lying down.
Just concentrate on the 'you' in the astral body and go on your way.

How to go on your way?? Breac says to listen to the wind. All your senses
are more finely attuned in the astral state. No matter how gentle the
breeze, you will be aware of it.Now, says Breac, ride with it! Step up and
off the ground and feel yourself carried by the wind, 'riding' it. It will
take you wherever you want to go. Whenever you are ready to return, it will
bring you back.

You can actually journey with the speed of thought, in the astral state.
Just think of where you want to be and you will be there. Similarly, you
can return to your body in no time at all.

There is often talk of the so-called 'dangers' of astral projection. When
your astral body moves off it is connected to your physical body by an
infinitely elastic silver colored cord. Usually this goes from navel to
navel, like a long umbilical cord. In popular fantasy/fiction it is said
that if this cord is severed you cannot get back to your body! Don't worry
about it; there is virtually no way it can get severed. And don't forget,
you can be back in your body in the speed of thought. We have no evidence
of anyone ever having died because their 'silver cord' was accidently cut,
so don't worry about it.

PectiWitans use Wind Rinding to visit other places, far away. Sometimes
they know what is ahppening at a distance. Rather than using the Keek
Stane, many will wind ride. The more you do it, the more practiced you
become at it, the easier it becomes.

I think you are confusing the etheric double with the astral
body - they are two completely different bodies with different
	laws attached:

The etheric double consists of matter from the physical world,
ie. the upper four subplanes in this world. The lower three are,
as we know: 5: gas. 6: fluid. 7: compact.

When the etheric double leaves the physical body, it normally
means death. Because the etheric double controls every nerve
and cell in the physical body - it is a 'double'. However, part
of it can leave - when an arm or leg falls asleep f.ex. This
can be practiced, so one can control it - and then it's called
Mesmerism - and can serve as a drug during an operation. Under
special circumstances, f.ex. during an operation, when the whole
body mechanisms are controlled by blood circulation machines
etc., the etheric double might leave, and one might remember it,
and then it's aclled a 'near-dead-experience'. The etheric doub-
le is also known as the vital body.

The astral body, also known as the emotional body, consists
of matter from the 7 subplanes in the 'next' world, the astral
world. This body normally leaves during sleep, and sometimes
our dreams are rememberings of astral travelling. As we develop,
we gradually learn to control the astral body, and then again
later the mental body. Sometime in a distant future we will be
able to do astral and mental travelling by will.

This is plain knowledge from the books. Check out the string
	in 1873.* ("Not quite Casper...")

	:-)
