1436.0. "Cats and "Things"" by DONVAN::BWALKER () Thu Mar 14 1991 13:30

Do animals see "things" we can't ???

Something weird has been happening with the family cats.
Especially one of them. He tracks something around the
basement family room. Quick jerks of his head from area
to area then he jumps up and runs to the corner were this
"thing" seems to stay most of the time.

I find myself watching the cats now more then the TV :*).

What really gets me is when the cat stalks "it". Forget about
flies, bugs, etc., there aren't any. I've got down right behind
the cat when he is stalking and I can't see anything.

The basement is the only place this happens.

I don't feel any sense of "something" being there and neither does
anyone else in the family. They find it unsettling to say the lest
     but not threatened.

     Any ideas ???

I find cats (in general) to be unsettling- they can
behave in such a bizzar manner. I had a cat once that did a similar
thing. What I discovered was that Biscuit was tracing a small draft
to its source; hence the ranging, stalking, pounceing.

                                   Later,

There was a small pencil-point-sized gap in the corner joint
of the sheet rock. The draft was "active" only when certain windows or
    doors were open (pressure diferentials).

My cats do this too, *but* we know what it is - mice.
If we listen closely we can hear them scurrying between
the walls at times. They will perk up, stare at a corner
of the ceiling, and climb on anything to get as close to
the point they've picked as possible. Then they'll sit there
and stare at the ceiling, reaching a paw up from time to
time as if to try to touch something....

Of course, there was the time we heard a doorknob rattle
when there was definitely no one there (and no explanation),
the cats stood up and stared at the window in the door
for several minutes, their fur standing up. It was really
    	spooky...

1436.7can cats be conceited? :-)WECARE::BOURGOINETue Mar 19 1991 12:2319
Hi,

I'm not sure that this is anything "odd" as in the sense of spirits,
things not seen etc., but it seems odd behavior for a cat, my cat in particular.

We (me, my two cats and new husband) just moved to a new place in Jan.
since we've been there, my female cat will sit for hours and stare at
herself in the mirror, if you pick her up and move her she goes right
back. If you watch her, she's not looking at the room in the mirror,
she's really staring at herself, if undisturbed she will do this for
great lengths of time. Her name is Beauty (and she is), so at first
we thought this was cute...now it seems she there all the time!

My tom is completely uninterested.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Pat
1436.8Reincarnated Cat ???KERNEL::COFFINWed Mar 20 1991 08:0011

    Hi,
I've just finished reading a book called "Fluke" by James Herbert.
The book was about a man who was reincarnated (sp?) as a dog, and
couldnt understand why he had the senses of a man and a memory of
a man but was now in the body of a dog....Perhaps your cat never
used to be a cat and is trying to sus its new body out...???
    just an idea...

    Regards Sam

Regarding -.7. We had a cat that also stared into the mirror at itself
and it also occurred after we moved into a new house. I have no idea
    why, though.

I was watching the cat who lives with me go through his stretching

Yes, in the realm of the physical, cats are supreme. They are
an incredible example of efficiency and grace in every movement.
I learned a lot of my own stretching routine from watching these
    masters do it.

Many animals are guardians... cats especially... dogs too.

I'll explain it to you as my Grandmother explained it to me.

In that space beyond the world of men is a place where life stuff
exists. And there exists all of the bits and pieces of failed life
both human and animal and other... species that never made it through
the evolutionary process.. bits of beings too primitive to evolve
unto themselves or too stubborn to disappaite. And when the walls
between the worlds grows thin, they sometimes stalk the world of
    man.

Cats see in a different way than we do... they see forms of light
and matter than we cannot... and they are hunters... physical hunters
of material game and psychic hunters of the 'tooth and claws of left
over life stuff' that sometimes drifts through the world of humans.

Cats never domesticated really. They came to guard us.. as only they
    can.

At least... thats what my Grandmother told me. :-)

And splendid, delicate flowers too fragile to survive in the
harsh environment of the physical world. And songs that have
never been composed, poetry that has never been written. Things
that have yet to manifest in the physical world, but one day
will (e.g., cure for AIDS). All of these, and much more, either
inhabit or transit through this "space".

Actually none of it is "bad". I just depends on how you look at it.

    yep...

... none of it is "bad" stuff... it's just stuff.. life stuff...
       existence stuff..

There too ... slightly further out.. at the end of the space beyond
the world of man, is the beginnings of the edge of reality. This is
the place where the fractals swarm.. forming the patterns of the material
    world..
