868.0. "PSYCHIC POWER CONTEST" by MARX::ANDERSON () Tue Sep 20 1988 20:25

So, you think you have PSYCHIC POWERS.

I have a number in my mind between 0 and 1000.

I will write it down so I won't forget it.

Now I also have some extra copies of the Skeptical
Inquirer put out by CSICOP (the Spring and Summer 1988
	issues... $12.00 value).

	Rules for participation:

	a) All employees and relatives of Uri Geller and
Kreskin are forbidden since they have an unfair
	   advantage.

	b) You each have a maximum of 2 picks each.

	c) You must be between the age of 3 and 149.

	d) All people over 14 feet tall will not be
able to participate. (Yeah, i know it's
	   discrimination but what da hell!)

	e) Must have been nice at least one time in your life
to a dog, cat or rodent.

Even for people who have the issues, you can win
and have another contest of your own.

Before this ESP contest begins, maybe someone may have
some alternate rules or maybe either another psychic
game to play. We could even base it on whoever comes
closest to the Mass or Albanian Lottery number.
Maybe 0 to 1000 is too limited or too much.

Just in case someone hasn't figured it out, this is a game not
a meaningful "experiment". Although I have seen equally bad
experiments presented by CSICOP members and other self-proclaimed
"skeptics" (i.e., true believers in scientism) as serious, I'm
fairly sure that Darryl realizes that this is not -- that whatever
the outcome, it cannot be treated as anything but the very weakest
evidence pro or con (although a negative result effectively *does*
rule out some theories that nobody believes anyway).

Anyway my guess is 255 (using the "psychic" pendulum).

I had 2 extra copies of them so I thought it would
be a fun way to give them away.

Every few days, I will eliminate a segment of the numbers (100's)
Everytime I exclude some range of numbers, you are permitted another
two guesses although if you are absolutely desperate for the
prize then you can have three guesses. Tomorrow I will eliminate
	the first group.

Someone before picked 999. It is interesting because I thought
of it (see you can read minds) but I decided to go with something
really random instead of some symbolic or brain twister type
number with special meaning (well at least not to me) like i.e. 666.

So remember, use your psychic powers to read my psychic vibrations
eminating from my mind (A front end amplifier might help). So
remember, less brain power and more psychic concentration.

I didn't feel vibrations like .104 (darn!); it must be because it
is after midnight on Friday and you're not transmitting!

The correct number is: 656 (seis-cinco-seis).

If by any chance you are currently distracted by other late friday
night activities that would interfere with your transmission (as my
reception is 78% and holding--unfortunately no distractions here),
would you mind marking your calendar for Monday (26-Sep) at 21:30,
think of the number for 5 minutes, place it in a palm tree, I will
pluck it out of the tree down here. BTW, I won't mind if other
people want to tap in at that time. Is this against the rules?

	Now for some more confusion

You can exclude the number range from 350 to 449 and 650 to 749

So, the remaining range is 300 to 349
					450 to 499
					600 to 649
					750 to 799

Just think, by tomorrow, it will be down to 100 numbers
and the next day 50 and the next day 25 ...

868.132How About ...MARX::ANDERSONTue Sep 27 1988 18:2536

I am wondering whether I should exclude some more numbers
or just give it to the person who has come closest. If
I keep on whittling it down eventually it will come down
to the process of elimination. What should I do?

Should I continue to whittle it down or maybe stop
at a certain point or even award the prize by 12:00
PM tonight or even tomorrow because I can think about
the number one more time tonight.

If there is no consensus or objections then by 6:00, I may
just leave the number range the way it is and award the prize
tomorrow at 4:10 pm if one can be determined.

Make sure you go back to read my previous note on the
final list of available numbers if you do not know.

I said I was going to think about the number 10:00 EST
well it actually was exactly 10:57. Sorry, I was putting out the
	garbage.

	Darryl

	P.S. How about:

NOT even tell you if you have guessed the number. So if people
pick the same number, there can be a playoff. People can
make their 4 best choices. That may eliminate any noise
interference of the psychic vibrations. If you want to pick
a number more than once, it would be counted more than once.
But you would still have to 6:00 PM EST today to guess the
	correct number.

This is just to verify that it is getting very close to
10.00 PM EST and starting to concentrate on the number.

It is 9:59 and my psychic vibrations are traveling
east, west, north, south. They are going all over the globe.

It is 10:00 I am repeating the number in my mind.

Yes, that's the number, just tell me what it is and you
	won the prize.

Hurry now before somebody else guesses the number.

didn't want to read thru all 147 replies....so
    here are my guesses:

    	410 and 999

868.149GENRAL::DANIELstill hereWed Sep 28 1988 15:475
Those are the very two, and only two, numbers I guessed; 410 was a joke because
the range that had been quoted excluded it; I was joking because he said that
he was going to reveal the number at 4:10, ar ar ar.

Now the question. Are we connected? ;-)
868.150just a good guessNEBVAX::PEDERSONKeep watching the SKIES!Wed Sep 28 1988 16:0411
Naw....just dumb luck, I guess. I didn't fully read all the
replies, so I don't remember what range was excluded. I guessed
410 because he said he would announce it at that time (why the
odd time? hmmmmm). And 999 was an inverted 666 (which we know
    is evil).

But who knows......maybe you and I should try some mind experments.

Sounds fine with me! Catch you offline...

I chose 999 because it popped in to my mind when I read the first note about
"guess this number".

The contest is over. I will announce the winner by
midnight tonight. I can just feel the tension mounting out
	there.

I would like to give a big thanks to FSE::JOLLIMORE for
compiling the list. It's a lot of help and plus it provides
a document on who out there really has been getting psychic
energy reception. It separates the "men" psychics from the
	"boy" psychics :-).

has already picked 42 I offer my humble apology.

    929 and 607 are equivalent:

    9+2+9=20 2+0=2
    6+0+7=13 1+3=4
4-2=2, which we got from 929!

Pardon me, you've obviously mistaken me for someone who gives a ____!

I didn't design the _______ thing, I just fix it!

I have just received the Number believed to be correct
by the Psychic Procrastinators of America.

The number they believe to be correct is...607.

    How close were they?

Now let's see if I have this figured correctly. In reply .147, I
guessed the numbers 836 and 423. Now.........

    836-423=413

    836-607 (the correct number)=229

    229+413=642

642-35 (my wifes age)=607 (the correct number)

Doesn't that count???????? At least I made it interesting and didn't
just yell out the correct number!!!!!!!

I announce with only a little humble-ness that I had two of the
digits in their correct places when I guessed 647. My one serious
guess. Sorry folks, I can't divulge the amazing secret of my psychic
powers, you'll have to read my post-humous autobiography.
