2028.0. "Kodo - Japanese drumming tour coming to Boston" by GENRAL::KILGORE (The UT Desert Rat living in CO) Thu Feb 02 1995 14:04

Last night we attended a fabulous drumming concert at the Pikes Peak Center
here in Colorado Springs. The group is called Kodo. It is a company of
drummers playing traditional Japanese drums and other traditional instruments.
They are currently on their North American One Earth Tour which will take them
to 24 cities throughout the United States and Canada during 1995. In a one
week period this month (!), Kodo will appear at the Kennedy Center in WashDC,
the **** Boston Symphony Hall **** and they will make their Carnegie Hall
debut in New York City. They will conclude their tour with an appearance in
Chicago.

They have been performing for 10 years, are very disciplined people who
exercise and practice 6 hours each day. They live on a small island north-
west of Japan and they play undescribable music. The whole audience is alive
with the beat and everyone, including the audience is exhausted but exhilerated
at the end. We bought a video which had 5 selections on it, 3 which were
played at last nights concert. It is loud but not painful and you will feel
the vibration clear to your soul. If you have the opportunity to see Kodo,
please don't miss it. You won't regret it. We payed $26 for each ticket,
for ground floor seating and it was worth every penny. :-)

For people in Colorado, there will be 2 more performances at the Auditorium
Theatre in the Denver Performing Arts Complex on Friday Feb. 3 and Saturday
Feb. 4. Last night's concert was a sell-out so I don't know if tickets are
still available or not. The Denver Post is one of the presenters so you
could probably contact them to find out a number to call regarding the
availability of tickets if you are interested in attending.

I'll second this...I went to see them last year. The energy was
incredible. The drums beat vibrates you body and soul. The energy
starts at the drum and moves throughout the room until the entire
area is 'filled' with energy. Their is sooo much energy you can
'see' it. Do you know what day they are coming to boston? I saw them in
    worcester last year.
2028.2Also heard in movies....GENRAL::KILGOREThe UT Desert Rat living in COThu Feb 02 1995 14:359
There was no mention in the brochure about a specific date, just the month,
sorry.

Also mentioned in the brochure was information about their music being used
in several movies lately. "J.F.K." and "Hard Target" used some of their
music and "The Hunted" has the entire film score composed and performed by
Kodo. I just may have to go see that. ;-)

     Kodo is the Japanese per-

    the Boston Marathon and
    performing right after finish-
ing the race, they have elec-
    trified sellout crowds on five

For those who missed Kodo drummers, World Music presents:
ONDEKOZA, Demon Drummers From Japan. Saturday, May 4, 8pm, Sanders Theatre

This group was founded in 1970, on Japan's Sadu Island. In the
mid 80's, the original members split nto two groups, one was Kodo
and the other became Ondekoza, which is still under the direction
        of the founder, Tagayasu Den.

In Japanese, Ondekoza means "demon Drummers" and in ancient times
the ancestors would summon spirits or demons by pounding drums.
This modern show combines the ancient rhythms with woodwind
flutes, cymbals, chants and precise dance derived from martial
        arts.

Tickets are $22 and $18 and are available at TicketMaster or by
calling World Music at (617) 876-4275 or Sanders Theatre at (617)
	496-2222.
