1969.0. "Goodbye...in advance" by TNPUBS::PAINTER (Planet Crayon) Wed Jun 29 1994 16:02

Last week the technical writing function was notified that we will be
cut by 50% or more (from ~750 to only 300 remaining) by the end of the
calendar year. It's certain that we will be TFSO'd, but we're not yet
sure of the dates. It could be next week, or it could be December.

So...here's my contact information in advance, should any of you want
    to remain in touch:

I hope to get a CompuServe account soon, and will post that as well.

networks space - would be MOST appreciated! (;^) I'm currently
working on DECnet/OSI FTAM/VT. Send leads to me offline please.

Cindy, I'm truly sad to hear this news. What a shambles our once great
company has become.

To learn more about "cybersurfing", take a look at the notesfile at
SOFBAS::INTERNET_TOOLS. There's lots of info on a variety of different
Internet topics, most especially the World Wide Web and the Mosaic web
browser. Other conferences exist devoted to Internet news access
(UPSAR::NEWS-BACKBONE) and news reader software (UFP::XRN).

Good luck and best wishes.

Cindy, you will definitely be missed!

And ... there's a whole world out there that never even heard of
Digital (because it doesn't *need* to!)!

    You'll be relieved.

Thanks, Mike and Susan. After 15 years, it's going to be...er...
    different.

I've been reading through the INTERNET_TOOLS conference, and that has
been very helpful. Also, someone in my group - a read-only DEJAVUer
(;^) has been kind enough to demo WWW and Mosaic for me.

Btw, if anybody here knows or remembers Don and Ro (Flaherty) Reinke,
Don's mother passed away last week.

Cindy, the largest job newsgroup is misc.jobs.offered, which sees
several hundred new announcements every day. I notice that most of them
are in SW development type areas, but there are some writer jobs out
there. Here are the other job newsgroups I follow (but there are
probably others):

atl.jobs Atlanta, Georgia, USA
ba.jobs.offered Bay Area (i.e., Silicon Valley)
bionet.jobs any related to biology, biochemistry, genetic eng, etc
biz.jobs.offered	various job postings
eunet.misc not too many job postings, but local to Europe
eunet.news same as above
fl.jobs Florida, USA (I believe)
ne.jobs New England, USA (i.e., mainly Boston area)
sdnet.jobs San Diego, California
slac.jobs Stanford Linear Accelator Lab
stl.jobs St Louis, Missouri, USA
su.jobs Stanford University (in Bay Area)
ucd.cs.jobs Univ of California, Davis (they do wine research here)
uk.jobs UK

There are also other local groups, for example:

aus.jobs Australia

etc.

Cindy,

Please let us know how things work out for you and your group; also if/when
you get an internet account on Compuserve ect.

IMOP you are the heart and soul of this conference, and whatever your personal
karma may be at this time, DEC (and this conference) would/will be the poorer
for your absence.

PS- another good way to "surf the net" is by way of "Mosaic", a windows based
interface to the WWW (World-Wide Web). Let me know if you need more info on this.

Thank you so much, Kevin. That was very kind of you to say. I am
touched. Yes, I will definitely leave my CompuServe account here.
Still to call them - hopefully within the next few weeks.

For an update on the state of Technical Writing in this company in
general, there's a note on it in the DIGITAL notes file, #3238. No
news on my group specifically (DECnet/OSI).

I just got Mosaic access last week, and have been 'surfing the Web'
    since then. (;^)

    Greeting,

I would like to know more about Internet. What kind of equipment do
you need to access the WWW. I'm a read-only member through vnews.

I have read thru the notesfile for Internet but feel intimidated to ask
    very basic questions.

Is there an astrology file in Internet?

    Keep me posted.

    Thanks,
    Avis

p.s. Cindy, I saw Joanne Peachwall a couple of weeks ago. She told to
    say "Hi!" to you.
1969.13PERLE::glantzMike, soon-to-close Paris Research Lab, 776-2836Thu Jul 21 1994 08:578
Don't be afraid to ask in the notesfile (but try to use an existing
topic if you can). But it might be easier if you could find someone
local to help get you going, since it can be a bit tedious if you're a
relative novice to the Internet. You can probably locate someone who's
an expert near you just by browsing in the notesfile. Give them a call
and see if they can either help or recommend someone who can. Most
folks who have caught Web fever are only too happy to help spread the
excitement.
1969.14TNPUBS::PAINTERPlanet CrayonThu Jul 21 1994 15:138

Thanks Avis! I'll pass along the news about Joanne to other friends
    as well.

Do you have a workstation that is linked via VTX? I have the WWW
commands to set that up. Otherwise I'm not sure.

I'm one of those technical writers that is now being 'outsourced' to
a vendor, along with 40-50 of my fellow writers. This transfer is
supposed to take effect on January 1.

We're supposed to remain on the projects we're currently on, and will
be 'leased back' to Digital. For a short while, I guess we'll be
working onsite until the vendor prepares their new facility for
occupancy. Whether I will have access to this account and the network
after January 1st is, as of yet, unknown.

Therefore, if I suddenly disappear from the net around that time, you
can also reach me at the following locations:

    Indeed! (;^)

I got sold (outsourced), along with 42 other technical writers, to a
company based out of North Carolina, on January 1st, and they are
leasing us back to Digital. Makes sense, huh? It hasn't been a fun
    process.

In any case, finally now that our project reports to VMS Engineering
directly (and NOT to SES management - those cl*wns who sold us into
indentured servitude in the first place), we have some realitve
stability that we can actually count on. In a takeover coup attempt,
VMS Engineering opened up 17 recs., offered them to technical writers
that had not been outsourced (my project leader being among them), and
managed to hire them before SES could prevent it.

And the real irony? SES is actually hiring technical writers from the
    outside now...

So it looks like you're all stuck with me for the duration. (%^)

I just can not believe that a person like me can stir anything apart
from a stir fry. I just happen to live on another planet that's all !!

Seeing as there are numerous "Goodbye" topics in this conference, I've
chosen this one as it has the most entries!

My time has come (again) to move on to pastures new. I will be leaving

Hi everyone,

A brief update on my job situation - I will be going back to work at Digital
next Monday, in the OpenVMS group at the ZKO/Spitbrook, NH, facility, on a
technical writing contract that will probably last for a year. That facility is
located only 2 miles from my home, so I'm quite pleased about it. For those of
you still at Digital, my email system will probably be JARETH::.
