1864.0. "ROLFING" by GIAMEM::MURRAY () Tue Jul 27 1993 15:55

    Greetings,

I went to a Rolfing session last nite and I was wondering if anyone
has been to a Rolfing session before. The physical therapist I
went to is out of Health Alliance. He also has a Rolfing degree.
FYI John Hancock Insurance will pay for these visits.

From what I understand Rolfing will help my physical structure and
my spine and posture will improve dramatically. Since I have had
a neck injury, I know have to be really careful of my posture and
    spine.

Anyways, the guy was very pleasant and I enjoyed the session. Plus,
he was really into the psychic stuff/New Age....whatever you want to
call it, so it was easy to talk to him about various subjects.

I can tell you that it was really deep tissue work. A much more
profound effect than a chiropractor or a massage person.

Well if anyone else has anything to share, please feel welcome.

    Thanks,
    Deb

I did some sessions of bodywork once in a practice that is similar to
Rolfing. It followed a set sequence through the body. When he got to
my solar plexus I almost stopped. Next session - the face,
particularly the upper jaw and roof of the mouth. Y-o-o-w. That was my
    last.

I remember it being very painful. I never noticed that it did me any
    good for body or mind.

Your mileage almost certainly will vary.

That is too bad you had a negative experience. I have a close friend
who swears by it. She suggested it for me because I had an aneurysm
and she thought it may help even more than physical therapy.

I'd be interested in knowing if it was good.

Perhaps the author of .0 can quote from the Rolfing literature.

Here's my understanding: It is a form of deep tissue manipulation that
is supposed to free up deep-seated physical or emotional blocks to
    health and well-being.

My experience: Looks like massage. Feels like hell.

I'd be interested to hear from people who got some benefit from it.

I'm disappointed. My somewhat over active imagination had it as
something a lot more exciting than that.

1864.6More about RolfingGIAMEM::MURRAYWed Jul 28 1993 18:0246
    Hello,

Jamie, do many people in the Netherlands have as a vivid imagination
and a sense of humor like you?! I got a laugh out of your remark.

Well I don't have any literature on Rolfing but I can tell you what
I've read. It's deep tissue work that is supposed to change your
physical structure as well as open up your chakra system (spiritual
system). Technically it is like a massage, except the PT did a lot
more work on my hips, bottom and face (jaw, cheeks). It was painful
because it's releasing the fascia from the muscle. Craniosacral work
does this also, but it's more subtle and it is not painful.

Physically, from one session my posture is better and my shoulders are
a lot less rounded. I know this sounds wild, but my body feels a
little different in that one of my ribs sticks out slightly more in
one spot and my posture is better. Supposedly, it takes about 8-10
sessions to be all set and then you can go for maintenance (maybe every
    6 months).

Now about the New Age stuff. Roselyn Bruyere is one of the top healers
in the US and she has her own healing school and also her own Church
(She's a Reverand). A really good book to read sometime is Healers on
Healing by WD Joy. It has a lot of top healers like Bernie Segal, Sun
Bear,...both traditional and non-traditional. Anyways in her book
"Wheels of Light" she explains the 7 chakra systems that we all have.
Scientifically, when they measured the chakra systems after a Rolfing
session they appeared to be more open and functionally better at the
same speed. This was done by a scientist with equipment. This might
be really far out for some of you but you can decide for yourselves.

Rolfing is supposed to change your body structure so that it stands
more naturally like it used to be..........like when you were a kid.
Because as adults we're supposed to suppress some of our
actions/emotions because it's not socially acceptable to scream and
yell etc. Our body holds this, and eventually it effects our muscles,
and facia and our body becomes un-natural and rigid.

As far as the spiritual aspect. I discussed this with the PT and he
agreed with Roselyn's findings in the book. Hey, I'm willing to give
it a try and I'll let you know how I make out. I'll be on vacation
on Friday for 2 weeks and I'll get in 2 more sessions and I'll update
    you on my results.

That's exactly what came to my mind when I first read the basenote! I'm
glad someone else is as bad as I am! ;-)

Of course once it dawned on me that it that is 'ralphing' not 'rolfing'
I felt a bit silly. 8-) Not too silly of course, but I was sitting at
my desk laughing out loud, and people were giving me starnger looks than
    normal! ;-)

    Hello,

I thought I would let you know that after two more Rolfing sessions
that I decided to stop. FYI I saw most of the benefit from the Rolfing
    in the first session.

1864.13SOMA - less painful versionFRNEDI::BAPISTELLABack to square one...Tue Aug 31 1993 15:009
     Hi,

there is a form of deep-tissue-manipulation which derived from rolfing,
which is much less painful. Here in Germany it is called SOMA. There
are several SOMA-practioners around, at least in my area (Frankfurt am
Main). I underwent a full cycle of ten sessions, covering the entire
body from head to toe, which really did me good.
