1845.0. "Help requested" by SPI::TANNY (mutton::feline) Tue May 25 1993 16:51

Does anyone know how to access the ANTIQUITIES Notesfile from DEC Windows? It
added it to my list of conferences, but I cannot open the conference.

Any advice on what I should do?

Thanks.

    Mary,

Aha! It's only one "ANTIQUITY", and it's on SX4GTO. Just press
KP7 or the Select button, and I'll add it for you.

    Hi,

This probably is the wrong place for me to be entering this, but
    I need some help/advice.

About 2 weeks ago, I had a very disturbing dream about someone
I knew 13 years ago. I hadn't seen or heard from this person,
nor thought much about it. Since the dream however, I've been
getting a real sense of trepidation, and finally phoned my
sister yesterday, who lives 1/2 a world away, in England. SHE
had had the same dream, on the same night.

I've decided to try and track him down, but don't know where to
start. The only info I have is that he works (worked) for an
American bank, and was based in Nepal.

International directories have said that they cannot locate a
phone number for me, based on just the surname and country.
There doesn't appear to be a Nepalese embassy/consulate in NZ
    (where I live).

    Can anyone offer some suggestions?

    regards,
    joyce

Just a suggestion that you probably already thought of, but:
instead of trying to "track him down" directly, can you think of anyone
that may be close enough to him to still know where he is? Like his
mother or father, sister, brother...etc. Or an acquaintance that was
common to both you and him with which you still have contact?

Also, I think you used to be able to, but I don't know if you still
can track somebody through their Passport (or Visa).

Hi Dave,

alas yes. I have tried contacting old school friends, and no one has seen/
heard from him. I'd contact his family if I knew where they were.

Called a travel agent today, and asked for all the banks represented in Nepal.
They gave me a list of *3*, but so far, all have turned out to be British.

I've also phoned the local press office here, who were quite surprised to
find out that they *didn't* have a news contact out there. They've since
given me the name of their International news agency, and these people have
said that they'll be in touch regarding a missing persons article. So I can
at least feel as though I'm doing *something*.

regards,
joyce

1845.6Call in the Cavalry...SPI::KRAMPFmutton::felineTue Jun 29 1993 14:0615

Call the American Embassy New Zealand. They may be able to help
you in locating an American Bank in Nepal.

Also, try the 3 British banks you have the names for. The information you
were given on his last whereabouts may not have been accurate, OR he could even
have gone to another bank by now.

This kind of thing just drives me crazy when it happens to me. Good luck with
your search, and let us know how it comes out.

GAWD!!! I forgot the most obvious suggestion. I don't know if you/he are
British, or not, but whatever country you're from, call that embassy, if there
is one, in Nepal. There can't be that many foreign nationals in a country of
that size , and surely the person's embassy would know of their presence there.

Your phone bill's going to be awfully high, isn't it?

Hi Mary,

thanks for the suggestions. I'll phone the American Embassy later today.

>..call that embassy, if there is one, in Nepal.

Well, I'm a New Zealander and he's Nepalese. We were students in England in
the 1970's. But, I did fax the Nepalese Consulate in Australia. That appears
to be the closest to me. Now it's just wait and see, and I'm hopeless
at waiting. I'll keep you informed of progress. Thanks.

Joyce,

here in Europe, the Red Cross Organisation regularly does person searches
'for humanitarian reasons'. My wife fled from Poland about 20 years ago, and
has been contacted on two occasions by a representative of the Red Cross who
mentioned an old friend's name to her, followed by the question: "Can you
allow us to give your current address to this person, for she has requested
a search to you?".

Since we have only been on the receiving side, I do not know (and we never
asked) whether they charge you for it. Yet it might be worthwhile to contact
your local Red Cross (or associated organisation) and explain them this
situation.

Wishing you well,

Arie
