1768.0. "Meteorite?" by DPDMAI::DAWSON (t/hs+ws=Formula for the future) Thu Nov 26 1992 22:22

		On monday this last week, Nov. 22, 1992, at about 8:30 central
time, I observed a meteorite entering our atmosphere. While that in itself is
not that "earth shaking" , I don't believe I have ever seen one that was *SO*
spectacular in its entry. It crossed over from west to east and from horizon
to horizon. I stood there and watched it for what seemed whole minutes. At
first I thought it was just some fireworks being set off because it seemed to
split apart into pieces and then the pieces seemed to "catch" fire and
continue. Did anyone else see this unusual display?

    I think that you were watching a meteor rather than a meteorite, the
    former are much more common than the latter.

    August is the best month for doing this, as Earth's orbit takes it
    through the Perseid shower, and that is the month our Boy Scout Troop
    used to go on its annual camping trip. Well away from any city lights
    the displays were often spectacular.
