1726.0. "Hurricane Andrew" by BTOVT::HARAMUNDANIS () Mon Aug 31 1992 17:39

Speaking with one of my ADF friends in S.Miami, Florida, it appears
that the media is once again not providing us with the correct
information on how bad the situation is in Florida.

From reliable sources, I have been told that the death count is well
over 200 (as opposed to the 35 between both Florida and Louisana) and
that the national guard has "incarcerated" many immigrant workers
there. Still a curfew at 7p.m., much looting going on and also there
were over 1000 arrests of which the local news reports that there were
none. I also heard that the National Guard and Red Cross were actually
turning away people who were bringing food and supplies in from outside
and that there are thousands of people who are not being helped.

If this is any indication that we should start a grass-roots movement
to help these folks out, we should do whatever we can. Contact those
who you know down there and ask them how things are, to verify the
above, and how you can help. The most badly hit areas are from South
    Miami, Kendall, Perrine through Homestead.

My understanding is that the airport is open, and the post is working.
Call who you know down there and send whatever you can. It is not clear
that the Red Cross is properly distributing what funds they receive, so
    be forewarned.

I personnally do not take for gospel everything that the media is
dolling out to us; the propaganda for George Bush's campaign. All the
footage we have seen is from single-family residential areas. There
have been massive collapses of large apartment buildings that have
killed many and the media is not reporting anything of this. They are
    still pulling the bodies out.

So, do what you can to help. Prayer isn't enough (although that is
needed to!). If you have access to a public BBS/computer network or
other conferences, I would strongly urge to post this and get the word
out wherever possible. It is time to organize folks, these people need help!

Listening to NPR this morning on the way in - I heard a lot of
this - I did not, however here any kind of death toll.

Some of the stuff I did hear:

	- People unwilling to leave their homes (or whats left of
them) for fear of looting - one man interviewed said that in his
neighborhood people are shooting and asking questions later.

	- A great deal of chaos with the relief efforts -
people trying to make donations of materials etc.
and being unable to find anyone to accept them.

	- Many curfew arrests

	- I forget how they put it, but that there had been arrest for
	  shooting incidents.

	- People who have yet to have a hot meal - a week later

	- The National Guard unable to set up tent shelters
(didn't give any reason why, though)

	- Tempers flaring among people standing in lines waiting for
	   XXX.
The interviewed people standing and waiting for gov't checks
at a make-shift post-office - people who had been witing in
line for 3 -4 hours fighting with people who were cutting in
etc. and yet NONE of the local bank were evern going to be
	open to cash them...

I'm curious to know why they wouldn't report any of this on
local newcasts - what would the point be of not reporting
it? I have not watched any of the local news.

1726.2...so I got the news faster than NPR?!BTOVT::HARAMUNDANISMon Aug 31 1992 21:246
...well, I too listen to NPR daily, and this morning they had none of this. The
report you heard must have been at noon. Even so, yours is not really that
different, as the situation is considerably worse than the gloss-over that NPR
gave this morning.

Keep an eye out folks...
1726.3...wrong station, NPR did not give those details.BTOVT::HARAMUNDANISTue Sep 01 1992 01:4114
As an update, it seems strange that NPR would again not broadcast this
news on the evening program as well. Possibly you had the station
wrong? Interestingly enough, all they did was the very brief gloss-over
of a slightly different version than the morning, and then they cut
directly into a rather detailed article on what is happening in Iraq
(favoring Bush again I might add). They did the same thing in the a.m.

Seems to me that I can sure tell who's paying for those broadcasts,
daily...and it's not the Clinton campaign!

Don't be deceived folks, brainwashing comes in many forms, and this
wouldn't be the first time that Bush used a news blackout as his main
    strategy...mainly for getting re-elected.

It'll take more than a news blackout to do that. :-)

The media is probably not publicizing the looting and anger because
of all the disruption during the LA Riots. The LA riots seemed to
spread like wildfire through several other states.

and it could be that there is no or very little looting and anger.

The conspiracy is only in your own mind.

The only thing going on in Florida is cleaning up and rebuilding.

    >There is no conspiracy

Steve how could you contemplate such a thing. There must be a
conspiracy to hide the truth. There always is you know, you just never
hear about it. Without it life would be indescribably boring and we
would have nothing to talk about.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you the one who also saw on the
news, riots in several European countries and a "tent city" being burnt
    down?

You stand corrected. You are wrong.
