1672.0. "DREAM EXPLAINED?" by PEKING::CUTLERJ (THE MOTORCYCLE BOY REIGNS) Tue May 26 1992 15:17

     What do'ya think this means...
Last night I dreamn't I was driving along in a car telling off
this young boy of about 6 years old for all the micheivies things he
had done in his life.I awoke curious as to who the boy was as he seemed
familiar when I realised that the boy was me (I reconised myself from
    a photo my Mum has)
Also I've read of people dreaming in colour or black and white but a
couple of months ago I dreamn't in cartoon(sort of like the He-man
    type of thing).Any ideas...

Have they discovered what makes us dream?I normally enjoy dreaming ,I
actually look forward to sleep as to me its like going to see 10 movies
in one night with me as the star in different situations/places and
experiencing different emotions and thrills, occasionally I get the odd
horror film (nightmares) but usally there very pleasurable but recently
the dreams are getting stronger as in they are waking me up (I must have
woke up maybe 10-15 times last night) and this can kinda wear you down,
    Any ideas anybody.......

1672.3Interpretations anyone?MPGS::AKEEFEFri May 29 1992 23:5639

I very rarely remember my dreams, and NEVER remember whether or
not it was in color, however I had this one a month or so ago and would
really appreciate any interpretations if anyone has any. (Though I
don't put a lot of stock into Freuds all consuming sex
    interpretations.)

I remember I was in the woods in Maine when the woods ended at the
edge of the ocean. I was standing on the edge of the ocean, though there
were only small ripples, no waves. I looked down into the water and saw
two brown and white speckled owls swimming like seals at my feet and
looking up at me. I then looked up to my right and there was a small tree
with no leaves and many (about 10-20) brightly colored birds perched
there. I watched them for a bit, really taking in the beautiful colors.
There was more to the dream but this part seemed the most significant.
Possibly because I don't EVER remember dreaming in color before....

The rest of the dream I was at a friend's house in Maine
where we were having a small gathering of old friends. This part is a
bit more vague but it was a fun friendly gathering and I remember a
    pleasant feeling.

Now that I really think about it, around this same time I had been
reading a book by Laurie Cabot and trying to meditate (enter alpha). I
was having a very hard time visualizing colors....Hmmmmmmmm.....

    Thanks for any help!

Don't worry Jason. I've had much weirder dreams than yours and I
hardly ever drink. I sometimes wonder where they all come from
because I am also awakened by them frequently. I've had strange
dreams as far back as I can remember - even as a child. Some of them
were really horrible and still are but I don't think there is anything
I can do about them unless I stay awake for the rest of my life. ;*)

             Alyson,
If I had dreampt that it would mean to me that the wis-
dom (Owls) I was seeking was to be found through my emotions (water).
Also my life (tree) would be- could be- filled with wonder (colored
birds) and awe. This would create a feeling of contentment (friends).

    Keep on reading.

                               Later,

1672.7We're not as Jung as we used to be... MPGS::LEONARDIThu Jun 11 1992 19:0123
Re: 0.3

Alyson,

I wonder if the keyword regarding the Owls isn't "at my feet". Could
you somehow feel that an answer is right in front of you, yet eludes you like
water through your toes? In fact, you even said that they were "looking up at
you".....one might even say "staring you in the face."

As far as the other birds in the tree, I find the dichotomy of the
tree's bleakness and the birds' colors. Since the tree is one of Jung's most
predominant archetypes, usually implying stagnation and being too firmly rooted
in one spot, could this be an expression of a colorful inner self that feels
trapped in a barren, sedentary form??? (Just a suggestion, of course)

Then again, with all these woodland creatures about, and you paying
such close attention to them, maybe it wasn't a dream. Maybe you should read
Communion again!

    Hi Alyson,

sorry about drivelling so much. You reminded me of a book called
"The Owl Service" by Alan Garner. Supposedly a childrens book, but it
is an old favourite of mine.

The main character is called Alison, and the story revolves around 'the
owl service', which is a dinner service. tracing the outline of the
plates produces a pattern of owls ... or is it. Hang on to your brake
    blocks!

1672.10A Bad/Good Dream?JPLAIN::AGOSTOSat Jun 20 1992 08:4120

Las friday,I dream that a big black bird open his wings in front
of my face. The face of the bird was covered by one of those mask that
they used in france by the person who was to chop somebodies head.
The bird had 6 long feathers in each wing and a wide tail.In the tail
was the fsce of Jesus Christ and in the other 12 feathers the faces of
other saints.I could not see then clear but I knew that the one in the
midle was Jesus.Next to me was a nurse that I know and behind me was
    a child of 5 years old,ME.When I was 5 years old,the doctors found
that I was diabetic, and that was when all my suffering started.
In the dream I was like I'm now.The nurse was like I saw it for the
first time and the child it was me back then.
I don't really know the meaning of this dream but I have a felling
that my candle of life is runing out of time. What I would like is,
if any one of you can draw, can you draw that bird for me.I would
like to keep it always in front of me until I learn the real meaning
    of it.
    Ariel.

I dream in color, would not want it any other way ;-)!!

Sounds like you had some bizzarre ones, we have all had crazy dreams,
did you ever had one that a person from your past, someone you never
thought about or seen in years and years, just pops in your dream for a
    visit???? WIERD!!!!!!!!!

I wonder where the issue of dreaming in colour or not stems from - I have also
heard that apparently we do not dream in colour, yet I remember definite dreams
where colour was an important aspect, e.g. dreaming of traffic lights... could
this be that we *expect* everything to be perceived in colour so it is a "mask"
that we apply to our actually b/w dreams? A kind of layer of perception over the
top.... or maybe that's me just overcomplicating the fact that we do dream in
colour to try and save face for the original proposition that we don't?

Dougie,
Almost always 1st person - the only times 3rd person experiences have
happened they've scared the willies out of me! I remember for instance a dream
of an NDE where I saw a bed in the corner of a strange room; I walked towards
it slowly - SUDDENLY *I* sat up in the bed in front of me - *YIKES*! Made me
jump like hell!!! That's about the only ever time I remember 3rd person, eve
when I was experimenting with lucid dreams they were all 1st person.

	How about you?

Re .15 (Cliff):

I've always dreamed in color (except one dream where I was experimenting with a
three-dimensional, large-screen, TV display I was developing, and its picture
was monochrome). My mother, however, used to tell me that she dreamed in
various shades of gray.

It may depend on the individual.

    Re:what person - Both

To clarify, I sometimes have dreams in which I am both experiencing it,
    and watching myself experience it.

I have never noticed if I dreamed in color I not - I think so.

    But I've definitely dreamed in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd person. Sometimes I'm
a third person watching myself interact with someone else. Sometimes I
change from 1st person to the other person's viewpoint.

And to answer the age old question, yes I dreamed I died once by
falling off a cliff. I left my dead body and floated around for a
while watching what happened. I remember thinking how neat it was!

One disturbing dream recently was that I was either a gangster, or
being chased by gangsters. In it I killed someone with a high-powered
rifle. I had no feelings of regret, it was something that had to be
done. I feel really bad (now) about doing this, even in a dream. I
hope not to ever have this kind of dream again.

    Weird.

1672.19Death and TransformationCARTUN::BERGGRENheart full of songWed Jun 24 1992 19:3433
    Ariel .10,

Wow! What a powerful dream that must have been! I think you have
made an important connection between the 5 year old child (you) in
the dream and that at 5 years old you were found to have diabetes and
that was the time when you say all your "suffering" began. At this
point it might be very useful to reflect upon, not the curse of
diabetes, but what you have learned through having it, (if you
    haven't already done so).

Although the Great Bird's head was covered with an executioner's mask
perhaps giving the feeling of your impending death, this symbology
is very common "dream language" and may not indicate a literal, physical
    death at all.

For the motif of death is also a harbinger, a universal symbol, of
_Inner Transformation_, and not necessarily an indicator of physical
death....though such inner transformation _always_ involves a "death,"
to some degree, of some part of the self or self-image, so that a
re-birth into a new, more expanded, or sacred self may take place.
(Remember Jesus and the saints, symbols of The Sacred who were also
playing prominent roles in your dream.)

The core dynamics of this process are essentially the same as the
birth-death-resurrection symbology in Christianity, the story of the
Phoenix rising from the ashes, and many experiences throughout the
ages of initiation from a profane person into a sacred person. So
perhaps this dream is _very_ much one to celebrate. :-)

My hubby dreamt the other evening of his own death. He was wathcing myself and
the family standing round his hospital bed, and then making funeral
arrangements, but he said what was more upsetting was the fact that nobody was
trying to find out what his actual cause of death was. It seemed to sort of
jump about all over the place, and the next thing was his funeral.

We were all standing round again, and he says it seemed funny at the time he
was jumping about trying to attract all our attention but in particular my
young 13 year old brother whom he is very close to, there was also a bit where
he was lifting up candles and waving them in the air - and no-one noticed any
of these things. He said he finally gave up and decided that since he was a
ghost he might as well give it a try and proceeded to walk through a wall
leaving a large ectoplasmic mark where he passed through.

All in all he said it was quite frightening but funny at the same time, a sort
of spoof ghost story.

The things TV progs are made of.
