LAKE RIDGE, Va. (UPI) -- An associate pastor at a Catholic church
bears stigmata, the marks of Christ on the cross, and statues in the
sanctuary weep in his presence, the pastor and congregation members told
The Washington Post.
``It seems to be a physical phenomenon assciated with Father (James)
Bruse,'' said the Rev. Daniel Hamilton, the pastor at St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton Church.
Stigmata, marks on the wrists, feet and side where Christ was nailed
to the cross, have been attributed to Catholic mystics such as St.
Francis of Assisi.
Bruse, who showed reporters pink marks on his wrists and the back of
his hands after Sunday services, told the Post, ``When it first started,
I thought it was some kind of skin disease.''
When asked about a possible hoax, Bruse told the paper: ``I would be
just as cynical. I would be questioning this.''
Hamilton called himself ``the ultimate cynic'' on such matters. He
said on New Year's Eve, when Bruse approached him about weeping statues,
he noticed the marks, and that he later went to Bruse's room in the
rectory.
``I looked at his statue of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and the statue
was crying blood,'' Hamilton said. ``I backed out of his room.''
Hamilton said when he returned to his own room, a statue Bruse had
given him was crying as well.
The Diocesan Chancery in Arlington issued a statement that in all
such instances, ``the church recommends great caution in forming
judgments and advises against any speculation on the causes or possible
significance of the reported events.''
Bruse said the marks, also on his feet and right side, last bled
about 10 days ago but added the pain still exists. ``I think it's a
phenomenon,'' he told the paper. ``I feel like it's from Christ.''
One congregation member, Tom Saunders, said he has seen supernatural
events in Bruse's presence on three occasions. Once he was holding a
statue in Bruse's presence and ``it started crying. I was amazed,
incredible. ... When you are holding something in your hand and actually
feel (the water) ... it's hard to say I don't believe it.''

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (UPI) -- A Roman Catholic church's carved wooden
statue of the Virgin Mary reportedly dripped water when a priest
celebrated mass, making it the second site where the cleric has been
associated with the mysterious phenomenon of ``weeping'' statues.
Water appeared on the statue in the lobby of Our Lady of Angels
Catholic Church when the Rev. James C. Bruse celebrated Mass Tuesday for
children from a Catholic school, according to parents and children who
said they were witnesses.
Bruse, who also has shown signs of stigmata, or marks that mirror the
wounds Jesus Christ suffered in his crucifixion, had earlier been
associated with reports of weeping statues at another church in Prince
William County, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
The latest occurrence took place at the regular Tuesday morning Mass
for 450 students of Aquinas School, a Catholic school for youths in
kindergarten through eighth grade.
Sister Mary Evelyn, the principal of Aquinas, sent a note home with
every child that read in part, ``After Mass, the adults present as well
as the children saw the statue cry. As with most children, imaginations
are alive and well here at Aquinas. Please listen with love and concern.
May we all grow in faith and love and become more aware of Christ's
presence in our daily lives as He manifests Himself to us in so many
ways.''
Bruse was taking his regular turn at saying mass for the Aquinas
children, according to the Rev. Paul Burns, pastor of Our Lady of
Angels.
All the children filed past the statue, which those present said was
wet on the face, chest and base, and said ``Hail Mary'' prayers.
``I saw the tears from the chest and I saw the tears on her face,''
said Nicole King, 11. ``It was kind of wierd. Some of my friends were
kind of crying. We talked about it all day and everybody was talking and
not listening (in class).''
Jennifer Velesz, a Woodbridge mother with two children at Aquinas,
said she was coming through the church lobby for communion when she
noticed the water on the statue.
``I was in absolute awe that this was happening right in front of me,
'' she said.
The phenomenon has never occurred before, said Burns, who leads the
1,800-family parish. ``It's so unexplainable and most of us are quite
skeptical about thsese things. This has us quite befuddled in a nice
kind of way.''
Bruse has become a minor celebrity since reports of the phenomena
broke last week but after showing the marks on his wrists after a Sunday
service, he has since declined interview requests.
The last time he spoke to reporters he conceded that if it had
happened to anyone else but him, he'd be skeptical, too.
Services at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton have also become jammed since
reports arose. Last Sunday, hundreds of worshippers had to be turned
away. Midweek morning services, that usually draw 20 or so people, have
been drawing 400 people.
