1566.0. "I Ching program" by SWSUP3::WANBLE () Mon Oct 21 1991 20:19

    I just came across an i-ching program that runs on MS/PC-DOS, it
    comes in two programs: I-CHING.COM, that runs on the DEC Rainbow
    (with code blue), and Y-CHING.COM, that works on the VAXstation,
    and other I*M clones. I'll make the archived file available, (if
    anyone's interested ) @ SWSUP4""::iching.zip. This should be world
    readable, but let me know if you have any trouble copying...
    Have fun,
    Ron

1566.1Ron, Can you help?TEMPE::DAUGHERTYTue Oct 22 1991 16:4617
Ron, Thank you for the gathering this file for us. I am leaving the
company next week through the transition program here at Tempe, AZ and
I would love to have this for my home Rainbow. I used the following
command:

$ copy I-Ching.com @ SWSUP4""::iching.zip

and got this error:

$ 510 byte record too large for user's buffer

It shouldn't be but I don't know too much about system stuff. (Is
my stupidity showing!!  Oh, my!)

Any suggestions?

Nina
1566.2If this doesn't work....SWSUP3::WANBLETue Oct 22 1991 18:167
    I just copied it over into another account with this command:
    copy sysup4""::iching.zip *. (It DID work for me.) By the way
    I didn't mention you'll need an "un"zipper, may be one around
    that works in VMS but I have a self de-archiving "zip" utility
    that works on the Rainbow if you don't already have it. I'll
    put in the same directory the I-ching is in.

    That should have been sWsup4""::....
    And the name of the zip utility is PKXARC.COM
    Sorry,

	Thanks, Ron. I had caught the sys versus sws problem.
	I have copied over both files and will give them a
	try at home tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.
	Thanks, much.

	Oh, yes... you called this an "i-ching program." What
	exactly does that mean? In other words, what will I
	see?

    It starts off with a menu to choose a "casting" method, old
    (meaning coins or sticks, I guess) or modern, modern "casting"
    requires that you hit the space bar several times, it then
    generates your tri-grams, and displays the text, (and some
    commentary...
    Good luck,

                              SYNCHRONICITY

                          =====================

    I bought a PC program about 18 months ago called "SYNCHRONICITY". It's
    an amazing little program based on the I CHING and the Jungian theory
    of SYNCHRONICITY. It always gives answers based on the 64 states of
    changes outlined in the book of changes. Nine times out of ten it
    gives very relavant answers to the questions I give it. It is legal
    to make copies for demos.

    The box says it is "Like Magic For:

                                  o  Relationships
                                  o  Office Politics
                                  o  Negotiations
                                  o  Tough Decisions
                                  o  Reducing Stress
                                  o  Peace of Mind          "

    I should add that I NEVER abuse it. I never ask it questions for
    personal gain; I only ask for guidance or wisdom in situations where I
    actually need it.

    Contact me if you want a free copy. I would expect 2 formatted disks,
    a mailer to return them in, and the exact amount for postage.

    By the way, the company doesn't mind the demo copies at all. They have
    a feature called "demo copy" built into the program. A [Ctrl] [C]
    starts the demo copy process when you are using SYNCHRONICITY.

    The following is taken directly from the SYNCHRONICITY user guide:

    "DEMO COPIES, REGISTRATION, ETC.

    You are encouraged to make fresh demo copies to share with friends and
    associates, bulletin boards, user group, shareware, and public domain
    libraries, etc. If people like SYNCHRONICITY as a result of a personal
    experience, they can order the program from software resellers or
    directly from Visionary Software. So, please do publish demo-mode
    copies of SYNCHRONICITY whereever possible - word of mouth and personal
    distribution are primary channels of distribution, keeping prices down
    for everybody.  "

    Please note that a fully functioning registered copy lists for about
    $40 (some places a little cheaper). If you decide to upgrade your
    copy, supposedly you can call 1-800-877-1832, and when you place the
    order, they give you a code to make the demo copy a fully functioning
    copy until you get the real one in the mail with docs.

    The company comes across as very reasonable, very enlightened people in
    the docs and the program.

    In Light and Love,

1566.7How do I know it's not the PC's synchronicity? :^)TERZA::ZANEfor who you areWed Oct 23 1991 12:0015
   Hi Bill,

   It sounds like a very interesting program. And the demo stuff is a neat
   marketing strategy!

   I'm a little bothered by one aspect of both these programs, however. I
   thought it was important to handle the sticks yourself. How can there be
   any unconscious manipulation if a computer is doing it?

   The programs sound like fun, but I'd have a hard time believing they were
   really personal.

1566.8Computers can be personal :-)DWOVAX::STARKPriorities confuse the mindWed Oct 23 1991 12:1814
    Hi Terza,
    	I guess it all depends on how you envision the 'mechanism (?)'
    	of synchronicity. Since I am used to using coins for I_Ching,
    	rather than yarrow stalks or whatever, and I don't expect that I am
    	influencing the coins in a directed way by handling them, I feel that
    	a well randomized piece of software could probably do just as well.
    	But then, I have a good rapport with computers, and only a passing
    	familiarity with money.  ;-)

    						kind regards,

    							todd

    	P.S.  Anybody know of a version for VAX/VMS ??
1566.9Go Ahead Ask it a Question...TYFYS::SLATERAs we see ourselves, so do we become.Wed Oct 23 1991 12:4512
    Hi Terza,

    I understand your skepticism. I, too, wal skeptical until I tried it
    and it started spitting out answers that were definitely applicable for
    my life. If you will post a question here, I will ask it the question
    about you tonight and post the answer here, so you can see for
    yourself.

    Let me know.

1566.10Comments on Synchronicity.CADSYS::COOPERTopher CooperWed Oct 23 1991 13:3322
    I got a copy of the Synch. demo with my home MAC's new hard disk. I
    thought it was cute, though my "experiments" havn't given me anything
    profound or extraordinarily thought provoking (the "real" I Ching has
    rarely "clicked" with me either, by the way). The demo version has
    certain features disabled, by the way -- that's the carrot.

    The I Ching is intended as a guide to living ones life. The idea of
    not using it for "personal gain" -- an idea widespread for various
    Western systems of divination and/or insight -- seems to me quite
    antithetical to the I Ching. That does not mean that the approved
    use is for trivialities or for unethical enterprises; but the I Ching
    is generally considered to be for exploring such issues as "Should I
    or should I not buy such and such a stock" (but don't expect a yes-or-
    no answer; you will get a discussion of what can be considered the
    pros and cons, and the choice is left to you).

    Synchronicity is marketed, I believe, largly as a tool to management
    types to help them make decisions -- personal or business. That is
    completely consistent with the Kung-Fu-Tze-ian tradition from which it
    came.

1566.11My Orientation Toward SYNCHRONICITYTYFYS::SLATERAs we see ourselves, so do we become.Wed Oct 23 1991 14:2221
    Hello Topher!

    I agree with everything you said. But perhaps I should clarify a few
    things. I am grateful for the fact that I get helpful discussions
    (answers) out of my registered copy of SYNCHRONICITY. I am one of the
    ignorant souls who have not devoted any study to the I CHING, that is,
    BEFORE I brought the program.

    As far as my own use of the program, it is MY OWN ETHICS that I am
    following when I say I won't use it for personal gain. A typical
    question that I ask it is "What do I need to know for my life right
    now?"

    I want you and other DEJAVU readers to know that there is very little
    about me that is "typically Western thinking", and that I am pretty
    much on my own path, and I do my own thinking for myself. You won't
    find me following fads or following what other people are doing just to
    copy them.

	Ron, Help! I can't get PKXARC.Com to unzip ICHING.Zip. Sounds
	like a personal problem, huh! Please contact me off-the-Dejavu
	line and give me a node address where I can talk to you directly.
	I can't get through on SWSUP3::WANBLE.

	Thanks, Nina
1566.13Wrong "un-zipper"WITKA::WANBLEThu Oct 24 1991 13:5313
    I put the wrong de-archive utility in the directory, for the I-ching
    program, if anyone else has tried to do this, it won't work...
    Copy the RIGHT de-archiver first it's name is PKZ102.exe. This is
    a self de-archiving archive file, it will run on a Rainbow, and
    up-pack itself leaving pkunzip.com, which is the CORRECT utility
    to unpack I-ching.
    RE:several back, I-ching has always been right on for me, although
    you must wade through the Chinese type sybolics (Dragons, Great Men,
    Armies, etc.), not terribly more difficult than dealing with Fools,
    Goddesses, cups, swords, etc. The Legge translation includes several
    chapters of commentaries, including one from Confucious, that clarify
    the symbolism, somewhat, for me.
