1473.0. "What happened to WIDGET::UFOS ? " by FRAGLE::GUTIERREZ () Fri May 24 1991 14:46

This is a question to many of you who also read the
UFOS Notes. Lately, every time I try to open WIDGET::UFOS,
I get the following message: "Remote node is unknown ".

Does anyone that reads the UFOS Notesfile know what
    	the problem is ?. Thanks.

The node on which the UFOs conference resides is being changed. An
effort was made, however, to retain the same node *name* (WIDGET).
    Mechanics made this difficult.

DECNET really works with numbers. Each node has a table of node-names
which tells the software what number to use. This table is kept up-to-
date by referencing a master list on node ANCHOR.

What happened before is that the machine which used to be called WIDGET
and used to host UFOs, lost its name in the master table, so that that
name could be given to a new node -- UFOs new host. When your local
machine got updated, WIDGET no longer worked as the address, since your
machine didn't have a number for it in its table. Instead you used the
"old" machines number directly, and that worked fine.

Right now it looks like things are in transition -- UFOs no longer
exists on the old machine (actually, the old machine doesn't seem to
know about NOTES), but ANCHOR still does not know again about the name
WIDGET. When ANCHOR is told about the new node named WIDGET, we'll be
able to figure out the new numeric address, and be able to access UFOs
directly. As soon as your local nodes node-list is updated from ANCHOR
you will be able to go back to using the node-name WIDGET.

In the mean time, UFOs is simply not accessible for the time being.
Assuming that nothing horrendous happens, it will be back soon.

Generally, these transitions go quite smoothly -- but every once in a
while, through no ones fault, things just don't mesh and there is a
bit of a mess for a while. I'll try to keep you informed.

    Hey Topher,

Any word on UFOS yet? I hear they are having sightings in China.

The number given here does work, I just tried it. ANCHOR does not yet
know about the new use of the name WIDGET, so first it must be updated
and then your local database must be updated from there. How long this
will take depends on the policies about sending/receiving updates from
the system manglers for both WIDGET and your node. The process could
take a hours or weeks. I'll continue to check ANCHOR occasionally to
check when it gets informed about WIDGET, and I'll post here when I
notice it has been done. After that you can ask your system mangler
if an update can be done -- at least for that node (this is easy to
do if (s)he knows how). In the meantime, I would use the number.

The UFOs have landed. Until the DECNET node address databases
are updated everywhere in the universe, you may not know the
    new WIDGET::, but fear not.

Eventually, WIDGET::UFOS will work again. For those of
you who just can't wait, try:

1473.10ANCHOR now knows.CADSYS::COOPERTopher CooperThu Jun 06 1991 15:577
The central ENet database of node names on ANCHOR now "knows" the name
WIDGET::. Whenever your system manager next updates your local
database the name will be available. If you are in a hurry, you may
ask him/her to do a general update now (probably overnight) or to
    update that particular entry.

1473.11Status of the UFO conference?SCAS02::MILLERRA Tractor on the info farm rdTue Sep 13 1994 15:238
Was a new home ever found for WIDGET::UFOS? I sincerely hope the file wasn't
deleted when the owner left.

If anyone knows, I'd like to hear the status.

Thanks,

Russ

Strange to relate, the night after the owner left there were some
strange lights seen over that plant. The next morning they found
that the machine was gone and out side the window there were three
dents in the tarmac that, if joined up, would form an equilateral
    triangle.

Hey, I believed you, Jamie.

Of course, I'm also trying to convince my Mom that Santa is real, but she keeps
trying to give me this crazy story that it was my Dad that brought all that
stuff....

No, that isn't what .18 said. He said that only his *Mom* said
so. All we can do is pray for her and hope Santa doesn't just
    leave coal in her stocking...

Sorry, folks. I suppose I should put controversial information like that behind
spoilers. Hope no one terribly impressionable was reading, or I'll have THAT on
my karma too.

Yeah, Mom was always a bit of a renegade wacko. I won't even mention some of the
more insidious rumors she's fed me over the years. (I mean - the Easter bunny
and the energizer bunny? Never).
