1412.0. "What is Masterminding?" by DNEAST::DEE_ERIC () Mon Jan 14 1991 14:29

Has anyone in this notesfile heard of Masterminding? If so, can you
tell me what it is? Is it a reputable or questionable practice? My
sister who lives in Florida mentioned that there are classes for it
in her area, and she asked me what it is. Anyone know?

Well, since someone broke the ice, I don't feel as stupid
taking a wild guess. :-) The closest thing I can think of
is Master-Thinking, Edward deBono's name for his problem
solving and creative thinking system. Somehow I don't
suppose that was what .0 was referring to, though.

I just came across a book called 'Think and Grow Rich' (by Napoleon Hill,
first published in 1960) in our libraries book exchange. I don't know if this
is even related to your question in the notes file, but here is what he
describes:

The "Master Mind" may be defined as: "Coordination of knowledge and
effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the
  attainment of a definite purpose."

No individual may have great power without availing himself of the
"Master Mind." In a preceding chapter, instructions were given for the
creation of plans for the purpose of translating desire into its monetary
equivalent. If you carry out these instructions with persistence and
intelligence, and use discrimination in the selection of your "Master
Mind" group, your objective will have been half-way reached, even before you
  begin to recognize it.

So you may better understand the intangible potentialities of power
available to you, through a properly chosen "Master Mind" group, it
explains the two characteristics of the master Mind principle, one of which
is economic in nature, and the other psychic. The economic feature is
obvious. Economic advantages may be created by any person who surrounds
himself with the advice, counsel, and personal cooperation of a group of men
{note, this was published in 1960} who are willing to lend him wholehearted
aid, in a spirit of perfect harmony. This form of cooperative alliance has
been the basis of nearly every great fortune. Your understanding of this
great truth may definitely determine your financial status.

The psychic phase of the Master Mind principle is much more difficult to
comprehend. You may catch a significant suggestion from this statement: "No
two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third, invisible,
intangible force which may be likened to a third mind."

The human mind is a form of energy, a part of it being spiritual in
nature. When the minds of two people are coordinated in a spirit of harmony,
the spiritual units of energy of each mind form an affinity, which
constitutes the "psychic" phase of the Master Mind.

The Master Mind principle, or rather the economic feature of it, was
first called to my attention by Andrew Carnegie, more than fifty years ago.
Discovery of this principle was responsible for the choice of my life's
  work.

Mr. Carnegie's master Mind group consisted of a staff of approximately
fifty men, with whom he surrounded himself, for the definite purpose of
manufacturing and marketing steel. He attributed his entire fortune to the
power he accumulated through this "Master Mind."

    ....

Anyway, it goes on and on on this stuff. I have no opinion regarding this, I
just happened to see the book and decided to browse through it.

    Hi Eric,

    Actually .1 made me grin - I should have added a happy face to .4 - I'm
certain that .1 truly wasn't written as a putdown or to be unpolite.
And at the moment, given all that's going on in the world, we desperately
need some comic relief. As Alan Alda wrote in a Reader's Digest
article once, "When people are laughing, they're generally not killing
    one another."

Anyway, back to the book - there is a book entitled "Master Game" which
also may be of interest. I don't know the author though. Do a
dir/title=master in this conference - someone may have entered a topic
    on it.

1412.7I've had some experience....TORREY::WALSHWed Feb 27 1991 23:0629
RE: .0

Sorry for the delay in answering, I'm just catching up on my reading.

I have had some limited experience with a process called "Masterminding".
It is taught and practiced by the Church of Religious Science (don't know
if there are more than one of these churches around or not ... I only know
of one in Huntington Beach, California). It would be considered a
_New Age_ church.

The process is done by yourself or (better yet) with a couple of other people,
by calling forth your Higher Self and ATI. You then make a specific intention
("I want to be making $1,000,000 a year in salary by my 40th birthday" <:-) ).
Intentions are either material or spiritual. There are then specific words
spoken by you and the others participating which confirm that you will
achieve this intention and that you have the support of ATI. The idea is
that there is exponential _power_ in numbers.

I've only participated a couple of times and the sessions were lead by
a friend who is studying to be a Church of Religious Science practicioner.
They are quit inspiring and empowering. However I have only had "success"
when I unintentionally (pun intended) Masterminded with some other friends.
My intuition tells me that making an intention and **believing** that it
will happen is all that is really necessary. The other part is just a
formality.

Hope this helps.

    Susan -

You're quite right in your statement that intention and belief are
really enough in Science of Mind terms...the rest is not necessary. It
sometimes helps to reinforce the belief, though. :-)

A good companion study to Masterminding might be found in the book
_Empowerment_ by Straub and Gershon. I believe Masterminding is
a very powerful technique but runs into problems when it runs into
UNconscious beliefs we hold about ourselves that are not positive.

For example if I were to consciously intend by way of Masterminding
that I will make say $200K in two years, but I have an unconscious
belief that I don't deserve, then the Masterminding technique will
not work until I 1) become aware of the unconscious belief and,
    2) transform it to something more positive. I think this is the key
that allows techniques such as Masterminding to be successful.

_Empowerment_ offers ways in which to explore and discover unconscious
beliefs and approaches on how to transform them, then follows with
techniques that are similar to masterminding.

    Best wishes!

    re: .10, Karen,

I haven't read _Empowerment_, but I wholeheartedly agree with
that concept. Achieving what we want has a neccessary prerequisite
of finding out what that really is, including what may be
buried in the shadows at the moment. I think that's where some of
the more superficial positive-thinking type philosophies may
sometimes go astray, they make the assumption that what we think
we want on the surface is what we want at all levels of our psyche,
while we are actually often in unconscious conflict with ourselves.

    	"no we're not !"

    		"yes we are !"

    	"no we're not !"

Or maybe it's just me that has that problem. :-)

Yes I agree. Come to think of it, Gary Zukav's _The Seat of The Soul_
would also be an excellent addition to the masterminding technique,
as a good deal of it is devoted to the state of fragmentation that
Zukav proposes most human beings exist in. It is this fragmentation
that leads to the conscious and not-so-conscious conflicts within
    ourselves.

I haven't read that one either. I feel like such an illiterati today. :-)

    Todd_y,

Zukav focuses primarily, or perhaps even exclusively, on the
fragmentation of the human psyche -- different aspects of ourselves
which have different wants and needs, and the conflicts which can
    result.

    Ro,

They also appear in my Top 10 list! :-)
