Aw, we really shouldn't make such fun of the basenote. It's really
a very interesting note. Like the word "descum". I can already
see many uses for this word. Reminds me of cleaning out the 'fridge.

Of course, "descum bake" is going to be a little harder to find a use
    for......;-)

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to descum I go......

DECSCUM ? I think I worked on that a few years back. Not very
popular, though. I think it was superceded by DECSLIME, or was
that DECSLIDE ? This Nostradamus stuff gets weirder every day. You just
never know what'll happen next (well maybe SOME of us do, huh ?)

Joel, would you please clarify the scope and purpose of your
inquiry into the meaning of the base note ?

The `correct' term for that gooey sludge at the bottom of refrigerators
is "clib". It is a Cornish word for gooey sludge found in the bottoms
of containers retrieved from the sea floor around Cornwall.

From my reading of it, the basenote seems to have been entered into
this Conference by accident. As an educated guess, I believe it's got
something to do with the production procedures for semiconductor
    material; possibly substrate wafer preparation.

However, it has garnered enough replies so that leaving it in might be
    fun.

Thank you for sharing that with us, Henrietta.

    The infamous List-Of-Things-To-Do-Today dream
often surfaces at this time of year in one form
    or another. No problem there.

But your particular dream has been infiltrated
by EKAB MUCSED! She/he is a discarnate entity
channeled by someone in the Cupertino, CA area.
Our studies show that EKAB MUCSED is highly al-
lergic to certain fumes emanating from San Fran-
cisco Bay. Upon exposure she/he becomes com-
pletely disoriented and, in order to affirm iden-
tity, seeks out the first available loope.

Not to worry! Interpretation is still possible.
Feel free to contact me off-line for further in-
    formation.

Is 'Sdrawkcab' the most ominous deity you could invoke ?
From Uvajed inhabitants I expected something more along the lines of
mathemetical transliterations based on numerical values of the letters,
such as was obviously (?) the intent of the base note in transposing
MACBETH into BAKE. BAKE is for BACON, the suspected true author of
Macbeth. There is more to this phenomenon than meets the eye !
The meaning of the note string is its neurosemantic response on
a globally networked level. N'est Pas ? Sorry to be so vulgar,
but I forgot the rules for a moment. :-)

    re: .23 (Karendipity)

That's simple...a masking passdown is two different things:
in old Minoan folk-lore it is what happens when the masked midnight
revelers have a little too much to imbibe and fall down and stay
passed-out with their masks still on. This time-honored and
revered custom later gave way to a group of Yale students, who
in their own respectful rememberances used a variation of the theme
while pledging. Seems that they, too, use masks...for placing on
the heads of those that are pledging AND, in a spirit of love and
generosity, allow others the opportunity to haze in a hierarchy of
    custom and ritual.

1398.31Right on, .19!STRATA::RUDMANAlways the Black Knight.Tue Jan 15 1991 18:1339
Someone in Cupertino had too much cough medicine for lunch and
    did forget which Notesfile he/she was in.  As Steve Kallis (Jr.) (.9;
whotta guy!) said, it's a Photo Masking passdown from their
semiconductor operation. (We in Hudson, Ma. are *the* semiconductor
operation of DEC--and if this doesn't get a rise out of Mr./Ms.
Luna nothing will--and we have similar terms for our Photo operation.)
Check out the latest copy of the Notesfile list and you'll probably
see titles for semiconductor operations. But don't bother to access
them, 'cause it'll be like reading a foreign language of which you
    know 10% of the nouns.

Briefly, you apply photoresist (light-sensitive, like the coating
on Kodak (TM) film) to whatever (in our case it is a 125mm dia.
oxidized (SiO2) silicon wafer destined to be many integreted circuits
to be stuffed inside Digital equipment (catchy phrase), expose it to
a high-intensity light through a photomask (clear plate with a device
layer pattern on it--aligned to the prev. pattern, if any), develop it
(remember Kodak?), inspect it under a 'scope to ensure proper
alignment, bake it (in a Bake Oven, where else?), remove the unwanted
resist, etch off the exposed oxide (acid or plasma etch, or both),
dope the exposed silicon (artificially "contaminate" it with a
specified dopant to a specific amount & depth to change the electrical
characteristics), strip the resist (typically there's a Descum Process
because there's usually some residue--called "scum", a good word
for it--the std. removal process leaves behind, add another layer
of film and repeat the whole process. Keep doing this until you
have a wafer full of working devices (well, almost full) that, when
diced (each little device is called a "die") and put into those
funny little plastic or ceramic things (with all those little legs
that you see when you peek inside a DEC system) make symbols appear
on your monitor (CRT) when you push those little buttons on your
    keyboard. (Pant-pant-pant; a long sentence.)

On the other hand, .14's explanation sounds more plausible...
