1373.0. "Nostradamus, Desert-Shield and Cornflakes - hows that for starters" by SNOC02::KING (Randall King @SNO Sydney, Aussieland) Sun Oct 14 1990 12:45

Nostradamus hasn't been around in the conference for a while.

Here's a topical posting I made to the alt.desert-shield conference.

I'm sure this should provoke some interesting discussions! I'll
    be watching.

Summary: Reading the unadulterated quatrains is different from the TV soapie.
Were they cornflakes in his water bowl, or the end of the world?

I would recommend that anyone interested in the good Dr Nostra (he was a plague
specialist, one of which knocked off his wife and kids in 1537 - this was a real
downer for his credibility at the time), read a book that includes all his
quatrains, preferably in French and English rather than the TV specials. I have
a CORGI paperback publ 1975 "The Prophecies of Nostradamus", Erika Cheetham
(Transworld Publishers Ltd, London) which makes for morbid reading these days.

You should get some good mileage out of it - the best, blockbuster ending
occupies up to 10% of all his verses for the next 10-15 years,
unless George Bush spoils it all by getting carried away and nuking all the
enemies too early.

Mind you, Nostradamus's track records not too bad - predicting the Challenger
fireworks in the 1500's was pretty tough going.

"Nine will be set apart from the human flock, separated from
judgment and advice. Their fate is to be divided as they
depart. K. Th. L. dead, banished and scattered" C1 Q81

[ The 1975 commentary in my book is "This has been applied
by at least one commentator to the death of the three Soviet
cosmonauts. However, it remains very obscure"
           K. Th. L. approx = K. Thornton-Thiokel; the culprit company]

If after reading, you figure Nostradamus saw more than the bottom of
his water bowl in the dark (or was it just the Cornies from his breakfast?),
here are some thoughts.

Since this is meant to be the Desert-Shield conference, the old Doctor could
have some good and bad news for SH. The good news is that Saddam might get
zapped soon. The bad news is that this unleashes a biological attack on the
rest of us.

"Mabus will then soon die and there will come a dreadful
destruction of people and animals [note: no property]. Suddenly
vengeance will be revealed, a hundred hands, thirst and hunger when
the comet comes to pass." C2 Q62

Mabus is the name of some third world leader. Nostradamus commonly used anagrams
for these in which he would change one letter - for example Hitler was named as
"Hister" in the Prophecies. The 'comet' (referred to in a number of quatrains)
could be a missile.

My famous King Whacko Theory is that Mabus is an anagram for
"Sudam". The Dr apparently HEARD and saw his prophesies in his bowl. If he
had wandered across a bunch of Arab's prostrating themselves over
their CIC, he may have picked up pronunciation, but not being
able to read the Arabic script, "Sudam" was the closest he could
get to it. Not bad for the 16th century.

On a close reading of his "Third Anti-Christ War" quatrains,
the real 3rd Anti-Christ comes from the Orient, NOT the Middle
East at all. However the Middle East situation seems to be a catalyst
for all the other rotten things that follow. Would this opportunity of
a second front be too good for a committed antagonist to pass up?

For instance, whatever will the kind-hearted, peace-loving, nuclear-capable
Chinese Peoples Liberation Army be doing when the bully boys from the Cultural
Revolution have grown up and take over the Loch-Nor toys, whilst all the action
is going on in the Gulf and Mediterranean some years hence? The Chinese
hardliners (remember? the moral ones who force abortions on mothers with more
than one child, and do target practice on the locals off Tian-men Square?) are
hardly enthralled at the USSR getting out of the Global Conquest business.

"In the year 1999, and seven months, from the sky will come
the great King of Terror. He will bring back to life the
great king of the Mongols [Genghis Kahn]. Before and after War
         reigns happily." C10 Q72

"Long awaited, he will never return in Europe, he will appear in
Asia; One of the league issued from great Hermes [war], he will
grow above all other powers in the Orient" C10 Q75

"From beyond the Black Sea and great Tartary [China] there will
be a king who will come to see France. He will pass through
Alania [Southern Russia] and Armenia, and leave his bloody rod
         in Byzantium [Turkey]." C5 Q54

"The man from the East will come out of his seat and will
cross the Appenines to see France. He will cross through the
sky, the seas and snows, and he will strike everyone with his
         rod". C2 Q29

In article <54200001@hpindda.cup.hp.com>, krause@hpindda.cup.hp.com
(Mike Krause) writes (in reference to the recent Aussie TV special
apparently shown in the US)...

>The special laid down a number of prerequisites that needed to be in place
>before the prediction would come true.

>(1): the US and USSR are cooperating (this is true)

   References:

"One day the two great leaders will be friends; their power will be
seen to grow. The new land [America] will be at the height of its
power. To the man of blood [3rd Antichrist] the number is reported
[will begin assessing strategic opportunities..]. C2 Q89

"When those of the Northern pole [USA/USSR] are united together,
in the EAST will be fear and dread. A new man ELECTED, supported
by the great one who trembles [somebody old?], both Rhodes and Byzantium
[Greece and Turkey] will be stained with Barbarian blood. C6 Q21

"The rule left to two, they will hold it a very short time. 3 years
and 7 months having passed, they will go to war. The two vestals
[vassals - probably 2 smaller countries staying neutral] will rebel
against them; the victor then born on American soil [ie. the Yanks
   eventually win]." C4 Q95

"The two will not remain allied for long; within the thirteen years
they give in to barbarian power. There will be such loss on both sides
that one will bless the bark of Peter and its leader [the end of
millenium Pope will be a peacemaker].

(2): the USSR has been converted to a Muslim run military
>(close since about 25% of USSR is Muslim but close does not cut it)

Pure fantasy. This has nothing to do with Nostradamus.

>(3) said Muslim military would supply united Arab leader with weapons or at
>least delay US intervention (something to this effect, going from memory)

An interpretation, not a Nostradamus prediction.

"Famine and weapon; help provided too late, Persia [Iran/Iraq?] will turn
and invade Macedonia [Turkey]." C2 Q96

"From beyond the Black Sea and great Tartary [China] there will
be a king who will come to see France. He will pass through
Alania [Southern Russia] and Armenia, and leave his bloody rod
         in Byzantium [Turkey]." C5 Q54

As you can see, Dr Nostr predicts the Eastern forces "passing through".
Perhaps the US restraining influence is the UN, or worries over the Ruskies
who we are meant to be at odds with again by 1994?

>(4): the Arab world would be completely united behind this leader (nope,
>never happened and the fundamentalists are definitely against Saddam, so
>its unlikely that it ever will)

"The people of Rhodes [Greece] will demand help, abandoned by the
neglect of their heirs. The Arab Empire will assess its course,
its cause revived again by the West." C4 Q39

This isnt quite as gung ho as being "completely united". Again, another
   scenario, not a prediction.

>(5): He has to have ICBM to lob nukes to NY or the east coast.

For a start, you dont need an ICBM, just a determined terrorist
with a parked car with a surprise package in the back (remember that
unaccounted enriched uranium that disappeared in Europe in the early
   80's?....)

Second, as mentioned previously, the threat to the US could
come from the Orient, not the Middle East.

>Anyway, not all the prereqs are in so its unlikely
>that the final prediction of nuclear war will come true.

You might as well be optimistic. The alternative's not so hot.

   Recommendations?

1. Dont nominate as the next Pope; when your domecile gets nuked you'll
get a better spectacle than Nero did.

2. If you like sunning around the Mediterranean, sking in southern Switzerland
or are culture-vultured into Renaissance art, nows the time. Take lots
of piccies while its still there - they'll make great before and after
shot. Just make sure you get it out of your system before 1995.

3. Get in on the ground floor and establish a snorkel distributorship in the UK
before the rush - half the place is supposed to sink.

4. Avoid Manhattan - its likely to be a distinct health hazard when it gets
both poisoned (sulphur in water supply) and barbequed - if you survive
the muggers and Bernard Goetz's in the meantime that is...

(Those of us Down Under can afford to be flippant - fortunately
Dr Nostra left us out of it; we've only got to shear a few more sheep
for some woollies for the Nuclear Winter ....)

Regards.

    Hi Randall,

Any comments on the earthquake that was suppose to split California
in half? As I recall it was suppose to happen May of 1985, talk about
shaking nerves. Waiting for that to happen was probably worse then the
7.1 we had a year ago. I just happen to be here at DEC Cupertino site.

Any thoughts on the predictions now that the U.S. and the coalition has
engaged in war against Iraq? I'd be curious to hear people's
    interpretations now!
