----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a potential problem and was hoping the readers of DEJAVU might
be able to help.

My children are involved with Ouija boards at the home of a neighbour.
My kids are 12 and 10 respectively, and my wife and I have a great
deal of concern over some recent events. I know very little about
these things and have skepticism as well as some belief.

Like others here, I also feel it is not a play toy. What bothers me
and my wife is that this neighbour of ours allows Annie (she's 10) to
use the damn thing to begin with. This woman, our neighbour, also
claims to have been in contact with spirits (for lack of a better
term) that were evil and can differentiate between good and evil. She
told my wife and daughter that the devil himself has been in her
living room. My wife went over the other day and sat down with the
children, the board picked the number she was thinking of in her head,
she said it most assuredly felt like the board was moving on it's own,
it upset her to a degree and was alarmed that the kids were fooling
with this.

Annie claims to have talked with my deceased father and asked him
questions and he supposedly answered. This woman is a professional
she's a dentist and yet displays a great deal of irresponsibility in
allowing children to use the board.

What I don't want is my children to frightened by this and have
nightmares. My daughter has a vivid enough imagination as is, yet I
myself don't want to overly alarm them by telling them it has the
potential to be evil and do them possible harm.

Any recommendations, explanations and assistance you wish to provide
would be most appreciated.

Thanks so much.

I know that others much more knowledgable then myself will answer.
However, as parents, you and your wife should be able to exert some
influence on your children. Try having a heart-to-heart talk with
Annie. Let her know the possibilities and also let her know your true
beliefs on the subject. If your not sure, be honest, tell them that
also. Look into it together. Most people, and certainly every kid I
ever met will respect the truth and an honest effort to explain things
to them and to tell them why something might be bad for them.

Also, you and your wife should be able to talk to this woman and ask
her not to let your child use it. She is an adult and a professional
person I surmise from your note. She should either honor your wishes or
you may have to forbid your child from going there. If she refuses, she
may be trying to manipulate your child for her own purposes and you
should immediately remove your child from that environment.

I hope this helps. As I say, I'm know there are others hers more
knowledgeable about Ouija then I am. They'll respond from that point I
trust. I'm responding as a concerned parent. Mine are 15 and 13 and I'm
constantly worrying about them as I can you do about your's.

I will pray for you and your family that you get a quick, happy
    solution to the problem.

1333.2Tell them what it really is...MISERY::WARD_FRGoing HOME--as an AdventurerWed Aug 08 1990 19:5619
I would tell your kids that the energies that fool around with
Ouija boards are not energies that can be trusted and that a lot
of "prankster-type" of dialog will be there. At best they can
have a little fun. At worst, they might listen to the board. The
board is not likely to be trustworthy over time. As far as the
devil is concerned, I'd excise that one right away (since I don't
believe in such nonsense.) It's just spirits, not unlike humans,
who have nothing better to do than to annoy people. If they
were human, they'd be called "sick." As it is, people are somehow
    intimidated by this rot.

Buy your kids some ice cream and rent a video and don't be so
concerned about this. It's just junk and should probably be
treated as such, but not forbidden.

    That's my superficial opinion.

I agree with what Phil had to say, very good advice. It is not(in my
opinion) something that children should be playing with, because there
is potential for harm. Anyone who is easily lead should not be fooling
with it. I would encourage the children to not use it,and, try to focus
    them onto something else.

    Peace
