1266.0. "Monkeys from space?" by LASCPM::BARNETTE (I've got the cure with quickness) Wed May 30 1990 15:58

Not sure if this really qualifies as psychic phenomena (actually,
I'm pretty sure it doesn't %^), but what do you think about
extra-terrestrials? In most cases, people who (claim to) have
encounters with such beings, describe them as being man-like in
their basic configurations - two arms, two legs, one head etc.
Few if any report something like what you find in "Alien" type
horror movies, something not even vaguely human.

The reason that this is intriguing is that it would seem to indicate
some kind of galactic or universal template based on the primate.
Did we all descend from monkeys from space?

                Neal,
I wonder if maybe we (or they) are not just a
variation on a basic theme which works very well.

Or if the replies are false (either consciously or unconsciously
created) mabe its just a variation of "speciesism" (projections of our
    own image)

It seems that man (not woman) has created God in his own image, why not
ET's as well? I think it's (as Neal indicated) an imprint in our
(or the collective) unconscious. It's also interesting that all the
descriptions/images I have seen have all been androgynous.

Not to stop any conversation along these lines, as extraterrestrials is
certainly IMHO a valid topic for DEJAVU, but I would like to point out
that a topic on aliens and UFOS can be found on node OCTAVE::UFOS. it's
chock full of interesting stuff as I know several DEJAVUers can attest
    to.

I don't no how to set up the KP7 bit,so you'll just have to do it the
hard way and do an ADD ENTRY OCTAVE::UFOS.

1266.5one of these three?LASCPM::BARNETTEI've got the cure with quicknessWed May 30 1990 23:0515

I can think of three reasons why they might look "like us":

    1) they don't really look like us but deliberately manifest
themselves to us in shapes we can relate to

    2) there is a common genetic origin for the primate species
somewhere out there in the galaxy, or we are their evolutionary
    kin

    3) it is a pattern that appears by mere chance, but is a prerequisite
for the development of (what I will call) "achievement-oriented"
intelligence, this being the ability to apply the intellect toward
manipulating one's environment (e.g. building spaceships)

    re: .3 (Terry)

    That is interesting about androgyny....

Jung's archetype of the Self is hermaphroditic, which may or may not
    be the same as androgynous......

Also the saucer (the circle) is symbolic of the Self.

Just exactly why someone would experience such a thing is unknown to
me. Why should an archetype so strongly impress itself upon a person's
    consciousness?

Good question. I guess that's what we spend a good part of our lives
    trying to figure out...

OK I did the KP& bit for .4. I hope it works. If this keeps up I'll
know all the tricks. I'll do it for this note also. So hit KP& here to
    get UFOS

1266.10who's afraid of a little symmetryCURIE::GOONANso many parallel universes, so little timeThu May 31 1990 19:4516
I reject the thought that symmetrical eye and limb positions on a
species is anything more than an evolutionary pattern, denoting any
kind of superiority. Symmetry is only a response to the 3-dimensional
environment that needs to be seen by visual perspective and moved
across in a physical manner. Symmetry might actually be quite
    primitive, in the larger context.

When and if we come into contact with other intelligences, I doubt very
much if our sense organs will be able to comprehend them. Heck, we
might have missed them already...was that really a gum wrapper on the
side of the road? The scale of them to us, that's another problem. We
expect them to be a certain height, no more, no less. We certainly do
expect a lot! It might take milleniums for the "right" aliens to finally
    show up!

AND on a completely different note,
there is a puported vision of the Catholic Mother of God
talking about spaceships from Hell coming to earth,
but I forget where I saw it.
