SECT READY FOR SOVIET ATTACK

--Members reported stocking up, going underground in Montana--

By Jim Robbins
Special to the Globe
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CORWIN SPRINGS, Mont--
After selling cars, cashing in savings accounts and stocking up on
food and ammunition, thousands of members of a survivalist religious
sect here are reportedly preparing to move into underground bomb
shelters, believing that an attack by the Soviet Union could occur
as soon as tomorrow.

Concerned relatives of members of the CHURCH UNIVERSAL AND TRIUMPHANT
and at least one member of the sect say the group has been preparing for
an indefinite stay underground.

"My son called and said it's time; the world's coming to an end," said
Joanne Hoemberg of Fremont, Calif., whose son, Steve has been in the
sect since 1983. "He said he's packing to go under."

"We could well have another Jonestown, said Kathy Schmook of Emigrant,
Mont., who leads a group, called Network of Friends, that is opposed to
the church. "They are armed to the teeth and believe the end of the world
is at hand."

Preparations fro the reported move underground have alarmed people in
this agricultural valley. They are worried about accounts of the sect's
cache of weapons and ammunition.

Edward Francis, husband of Elizabeth Clare Prophet, the church's leader,
was convicted last fall of illegally purchasing $100,000 worth of
semiautomatic weapons and handguns and 120,000 rounds of ammunition under
a false name. Among the weapons confiscated were eight Barret .50 caliber
rifles, a weapon with a 6-inch shell designed to pierce armored personnel
carriers. Francis, who is vice president of the church, was sentenced to
one month in jail and three months on probation at home with an electronic
ankle bracelet.

In a statement issued Saturday, Francis said: "We have no intention of
going underground. That's simply preposterous. The shelters will only
be used if there is a nuclear war. We are not saying goodbye to the world."

Still Paradise Valley has been extremely busy for the past several weeks
as materials flowed to the church.

Mike Kelly, resident agent in charge of the federal Bureau fo Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms office in Spokane, Wash., said last week that a
trucking company informed him that the church had bought a "large ammount"
of ammunition. "It's nothing illegal," Kelly said.

One area bank officer, who asked not to be identified, said, "People
are closing accounts and cashing in IRAs and taking 20% penalities for
early withdrawal. It's bizarre. They don't want to wait. They want it now,
and they want it in cash."

In Helena, Mont., the church bought $55,000 in pennies and nickels from
the Federal Reserve Bank. In Livingston, Mont., a small town about 40 miles
north of the church's Royal Teton Ranch at Corwin Springs, merchants reported
large sales of food containers, flashlights, batteries, sleeping bags and
firstaid kits.

Church members are supposed to have stockpiled enough food to last several
months. Those who cannot make it to Montana have been told to buy radiation
suits and masks.

"It sounds like they're going over the edge," said Moira Prophet, 21,
estranged daughter of Elizabeth Prophet. Afer growing up in the church, she
left two years ago. "It's hard to say what will happen. I wouldn't put
anything past them," she said.

The state electrical inspector said he has processed permits for about
46 blast shelters in recent months. Many families in the sect have shelters
next to their homes, which are scattered on 33,000 acres of church property
in the valley. There are also several large shelters o the 12,000-acre
main ranch, including one that can house 756 persons, according to church
members. Church membership is estimated at more than 3,000 by former
members and law-enforcement officials.

Former members of the church and relatives of some members have alleged
that the church exercises mind control, a charge church officials deny.
Earlier this year, however, the US Supreme Court let stand a California
court ruling that awarded $1.5 million in damages to Gregory Mull,
formerly a member of the sect. Mull, who has since died, testified that
the church pressured him into handing over his savings and made public
details of his sexual life that he divulged to Prophet during confession.

The Church Universal an Triumphant's beliefs are a blend of Eastern
religion, Catholicism and New Age faiths. Members believe that Prophet
is divinely inspired by a host of Ascended Masters, who include Merlin
the Magician, Hercules, William Shakespeare, Jesus Christ and the
Archangel Michael.

If you were looking to convert your assets into something something
which could endure a total collapse of the world's economy, metals
would be good candidates. I don't know if it's true (and, frankly, I
doubt it), but I've heard rumors that the metal content of a penny is
worth more than the face value.

Nothing surprises me with Elizabeth Prophet.... In my opinion, she would
stoop to nothing to make a buck, and is into a heavy-duty power trip.
Unfortunately, it is people like her who give "un-orthodox", religious
  groups a bad name....

    > ...I've heard rumors that the metal content of a penny is

Used to be true. Pennies used to be made out of copper. A few
years ago, copper pennies were discontinued. The new pennies are
zinc, and this is flashed with copper so that it looks like an old
penny (however, they don't sound the same: drop a new penny and
    an old copper one onto a hard surface, and the "ring" is different;
the new ones sound "flatter" than the old ones).

However, if I were buying metals, I could think of less cumbersome
ways to do it than collecting pennies. There are bulk metal dealers
    in the Yellow Pages.

1223.7More on Elizabeth Clare ProphetNEWPRT::MILLS_MAThu Mar 15 1990 21:4621
I read through the previous file on Elizabeth Claire Prophet to see how
detailed a description of her "religion" there was. Several years ago
I was taken to "Camelot", the Universal Church Triumphant's estate in
Malibu (quite a place), and found it incredible that people actually
believe in this woman. I consider myself to be very open-minded, but
the claims she and her first husband made, that they were the
twin-flame (twin souls) of Guenivere (sp?) and Lancelot too much for
    even me to swallow.
I was also turned off by the several sessions of Affirmations the
"faithful" are required to participate in every day. I found the
chanting a form of self-hypnosis, which was personally repulsive to me.
In saying that, I realize that it may work for some people, but
their sort was in my estimation, just that, a form on working
themselves into a type of hypnotic state.
Given what I saw that day, the news that these people have an
undetermined amount of arms and ammunition in a cache is alarming to
say the least. If anyone sees any more on this, please update, I'd be
interested to hear what it's all really about.

To echo, more or less what Steve said, to keep people from melting
down pennies and making more money than the pennies individually
were worth. Over the years I've been saving pennies in jars just
because they're useless at the store but worth too much to simply
throw out. I have probably about 30 lbs or so of pennies. Maybe
    	I could swing a deal with E.C. Prophet? ;^)

True it's crackpot groups like this that give New Agers a bad
name, but just remember the Bakkers, et al. There are bad
    	apples in every bunch.

    .10 Neal,

By all means, make a deal with Elizabeth. Sell her your 30 pounds
of copper, and tell her you were Paul Revere last time around. Maybe
she'll show you 'round her fallout shelter. (We want a full report
if/when you return.) Maybe you can take the story to 60 Minutes!
"Did you ever wonder why anyone would want to save pennies these days ...?"

    Good luck. 8-)

I just recently saw some more on this, including her being in trance. I
am of the opinion that she is a con artist, brain
washer, hptnotist, and, its all a bunch of bull, designed to control people
and make herself rich. This is happening because people are
gullible, and, prone to be easily addicted to all kinds of things. A lot
of people are easily hypnotized, and, brainwashed. Its a sad state that
    we are in.

    re .13

I saw one installment of the PBS specials identified in .13.

The guests seemed highly educated and intelligent. A tip of
an iceberg sized conspiracy by government officials (not unlike others
we've heard of in past years) to cover up encounters with UFO
phenomenon (in the name of national security, of course) was exposed.

Much is still shrouded in secrecy.

	Hi Jeff,

Yes, I watched a portion of the show. The gist of what she had
to say is that she didn't predict nuclear war starting on April
23rd, but rather that there is a good probability that nuclear
war *could* start in this time frame. She feels that all people
should be prepared for a nuclear attack and that there is nothing
wrong with having bomb shelters. To her, our government has done
a poor job of providing us with this type of protection in case
of an attack. She said that this country has left itself in a
very vulnerable position as far as its defense weapons are
concerned, and that we have basically left an open door for
an attack - from the Soviet Union or perhaps from a smaller
        country with nuclear weapons.

I didn't watch the whole thing because I just don't like Larry
King. He always interrupts his guests and often asks, imo,
ridiculous questions. It could have been an interesting
interview if he had worked with her in a different way, but
she could hardly get her full answers out before she was
interrupted, and was basically put in a defensive position.

Maybe if someone else watched the whole interview, they could
add something to this. What I saw and heard did not clarify
        the situation very much.

I noticed in TIME magazine, this weeks issue with the mouth
spouting off all those negative nasty symblols and cultural
icons on the cover...anyways...it seems Lizabeth had a
gasoline spill at her newage commune and made most, if not
all the underground bunkers inhabitable...the local court
I believe made it unlawful for them to inhabit the shelters...
so the group is in the process of cleaning up the oil or
gasoline spill before the nuclear war breaks out...
