1128.0. "Theory related to Coincidence?" by EDEN::GOONAN () Thu Sep 14 1989 18:37

Has anyone heard of a theory on how coincidences clump together
because of some kind of force? I know I read something about this
once and would like to find out more about it. It also has something
to do with perception of coincidence in a person's psychic realm.
I tried looking through the keywords, etc., but couldn't see anything
    right off. Thanks.

In one of his books Maslow (sp?) talks about synchronisity.

Also, Kurt Vonnegut has some good ideas on the subject. V's
approach to the "karass" I have found to be true.

Carl Jung has a book titled _Synchronicity_ also.
	Explains it pretty good.

Note 738 (an I am sure some others) discuss synchronicity, also...
    thanks

On the concept of a karass: Even though Bokonon himself said that
he was lying, some of his lies turned out to have a great deal of
truth. Have you ever found people whom you suspected to belong
    to a karass?

I suspect people belong to such a group often...when they get
mad they always seem to say "Kiss my karass." This has the effect
of making one homogeneous and at one with a particular emotion,
which can then be used as a greeting for other members of the group
(as in "Are you a turtle?") Anyway, feel free to disagree.

1128.6Synchronicity anyone?CAPO::BRADLEY_RIFri Sep 15 1989 18:4517
    re:0
I have become something of an expert on this subject matter. So,
I have several recommendations for you:

    1. Arthur Koestler's, "Roots of Coincidence" is one of the best
    on this subject.

    2. The best new book on this subject is, F. David Peat's,
"Synchronicity: The Bridge Between Matter and Mind". I really enjoyed
    reading this one.

    3. You can find interesting background material from George Leonard's
    "Silent Pulse".

Otherwise, contact me at @LAS; I think I can help.

Oh yes, Karass is very real. I was in a store the other day
and this guy, whom I'd never seen before says: "Don't I know
you, No I said. Geeze says he, you must have a double out there!"

    Happens all the time.

Thanks to everyone for the reading suggestions. This notes conference
is really wonderful...have been reading it for some time now and
would like to say that it truly demonstrates the spirit of brotherly
love and tolerance...may it long continue to grow so that we all
    may.
