    Keith Milton Rhinehart, the founder of the Aquarian Foundation (in
    1955 in Seattle, Washington), is a physical-phenomena medium that
    has undergone a lot of extremely rigid, scientific testing over
    the past thirty years.  There is more about him in note 833 (the
    note I posted about the genuine-ness of a medium).
    
    An international telephone conference is a conference call hook-up
    that hooks up all of the Aquarian Foundation's branches all over the 
    world.  There are branches all across the U.S. and Canada and in South 
    Africa, etc.  The telephone hook-ups that I've been to before have
    been incredible.  For (a brief) example, I had a question that I was 
    thinking about and never expressed to anyone, not even my closest
    friends, that was answered specifically, in detail without me asking
    it verbally.  The Master who was in body at the time said (paraphrased)
    "And to answer Linda's question in Boston .........", and said
    my question the exact way I had worded it in my head and answered
    it.  This also has happened to many of my friends.  It's really
    an incredible experience!.....
    
    Where Keith will be at the time of the call, I do not know.  What the
    seance, "The Seance From Mars", is all about, I don't know, but
    I will definitely be there....

I have also been requested to explain what sort of church the Foundation is.
Basically it is a Non-denominational Church of Higher Spiritualism that is
based on scientific proof and evidence.  This is extracted from the "free
literature" and is entitled "WHAT AQUARIANS BELIEVE" (re-printed without
permission), and should give a better understanding of the church.  (Note:
the term, Aquarian, refers to a member of the church, not the astrological
sign...8^)...)

THE AQUARIAN FOUNDATION does not hold to any specific creeds or dogmas, for
Aquarians themselves do not believe in "belief" so much as in knowledge.  How
and where such knowledge has been gained, they feel is not as important as how
it is applied in one's life.  Any fixed creed or statement of belief, therefore,
might tend more to "crystallize" philosophy and thought than to allow "room
for growth".

There can be no single word or descriptive phrase which fully categorizes the
Aquarian teachings; for human language itself is, at best, a conveyor of
"half-truths".  Some of the terms often applied to various phases of our study
can be considered appropriate, however, so long as no one of them-nor all of
them together- are ever considered all-encompassing.

Some AQUARIANS consider themselves to be CHRISTIANS; some consider themselves
BUDDHISTS; and others, good members of certain other great religious faiths.
Yet, all or nearly all Aquarians are aware of the values and truths, as well
as the distortions and half-truths brought to the group-consciousness by EACH
of these movements.  Aquarians are aware, too, of the many similarities
which may be found in the spiritual and moral precepts of Jesus, Gautama Buddha,
Krishna, Babaji, and many other teachers.

AQUARIANS ARE SPIRITUALISTS, to the extent that they believe in and practice
communication with the so-called dead, some of whom serve as "guides" or
"guardian angels", through human instruments called "mediums".  This would
seem to presuppose a belief in the continuity of life beyond the grave, and in
other planes of life than this physical plane.  Aquarians are not content,
however, with presupposing alone, but tend to investigate thoroughly the
field of psychic phenomena and mediumship until absolute proof is found to the
satisfaction of each one of them.

On the other hand, Aquarians do not allow the belief and practice of contacting
loved ones and guides in spirit to become the main focal point of their
religion.  Neither do they seek psychic phenomena for the sake of phenomena
alone; for they know that when such a thing is sought after as an end in itself,
it becomes injurious rather than beneficial.  Only when psychic phenomena is
used as a means to a greater benefit, such as the giving of helpful service or
the stimulation of needed truths, is it worthwhile.

AQUARIANS ARE THEOSOPHISTS to the extent that they continue the studying and
sharing with those on earth ready to receive such knowledge, the teachings of
the Masters of the Great Brotherhood of Cosmic Light, as was revived in the
West nearly a century ago by Madame H.P. Blavatsky and her successors.  These
include teachings on soul evolution, reincarnation, the law of cause and
effect, or "Karma", the attainment of personal Mastership, or mastery over
life and death, and a great many not-so-obvious facets of nature.

Aquarians also, continuing the Theosophical principle, embrace the idea of
continuous service to humanity and of striving to establish world brotherhood,
without regard to race, creed, or nationality.  On the other hand, Aquarians,
like many other students of the occult, are aware that no book or library or
lecture course can ever contain the "last word" on any subject, and that any
such materials which are general enough to be given to the public may be prone
to man-made error and distortion.

AQUARIANS ARE YOGA PHILOSOPHERS in a sense, inasmuch as they recognize the
"yoke" to God, or pathway to Divine Realization, in its various forms.  They
have been taught in the Eastern Yoga schools throughout the ages, and the
Aquarian recognizes the validity and worth of each of these pathways, be it
one of advanced exercises and postures, special meditations, mental
development through meditations, mental development through concentration and
study, or of some related type of activity.  Aquarians are not inclined to
follow any one of the others, however, unless it is so indicated by their
development and by advice from their spiritual Gurus, or Master Teachers.

AQUARIANS ARE FREE-THINKERS in their approach to life and morals, knowing the
truth of cause-and-effect, the need for personal independent action, the
merit of the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have others do unto
you" and the worth of the Aquarian New Age commandment: "You shall love and
respect yourself".

AQUARIANS ARE TRANSCENDENTALISTS, continuing the line of thought advanced by
Ralph Waldo Emerson, who was surely inspired in turn by numerous others who had
gone before him.  Transcendentalists, like Emerson, affirm the truth, not only
that the higher meanings of life are to be perceived by means other than the
five physical senses, but also that the Divine Life exists in all things.  They
note with interest the fact that one of the means of perception developed and
used AFTER one's transition into the spirit world is called the "organs of
transcendence"; also that the great universities in that plane of life are
called "Schools of Transcendentalism".

AQUARIANS ARE UNIVERSALISTS in the original meaning of that term, Universal in
that they acknowledge a kinship with everything that exists, and a SURETY OF
ULTIMATE UNIVERSAL SALVATION, or self-realization, for all members of the
human race.

(re-printed without permission), an account of a seance that Rev. Rhinehart
gave:

        FAMED MEDIUM GIVES SEANCE IN PRESIDENT'S PALACE
            SPIRIT VOICE SPEAKS IN TEST CONDITIONS
                APPORTS APPEAR IN FULL LIGHT

    I read last week how the Mexican President's wife invited famed US medium
Keith Rhinehart to demonstrate at their palace.  During the seance - Keith
and his party were escorted by gun-toting guards - a spirit voice communicated
in test conditions.

    And Madame Carmen Portillo - her husband has been president for three
years - was instrumental in ensuring that fraud-proof precautions were taken.

    At the Mexico City presidential palace Keith:

    * So moved one of Portillo's daughters with a spirit message that she wept.
    * Reunited the same daughter's fiance with a friend who had died violently.
    * Produced apports from his eyes, mouth, cheeks and ears in full light.
    * Subsequently returned to the palace to demonstrate spirit healing.

    The report for PN was written by Linda Dunn, a US psychic researcher.
Present at this seance were her husband, Alvis, Weston and Kathleen Bailey
of Honolulu, Hawaii, Marilou McIntyre of Portland, Oregon, Susie Brown Hall
of Hollywood, California, and a Spanish interpreter.

    "We were unexpectedly greeted by over a dozen guards in full military
regalia brandishing automatic weapons," said Linda.
    "As we were escorted into a guarded area it was explained this was the
routine security procedure for guests."

    After a short wait the party were "guided down several hallways, up a
flight of stairs and into a lounging area dominated by a large, sunken,
circular conversation pit.  Around it were stationed individual chairs.

    "Here we were greeted by the President's wife."

    The First Lady said she had received reports of Keith's mediumship.  The
most recent was from a close adviser she sent to attend one of Rhinehart's
demonstrations a few days earlier in Acapulco.

    Several hundred people attended this public seance at the Mexican seaside
resort.  It was video-taped by a local TV station.

    The aide told Madame Portillo of the many evidential spirit communications
Keith relayed.  His mediumship, she was assured, was of the highest.

    The President's wife was shown photos of various phenomena that occurred
through Keith's gifts at a Seattle, Washington, convention in 1975.

    The most astounding was of a materialised form standing outside the
seance cabinet, "in front, and to the right, of the medium".

    "The curtains of the cabinet are fully open," said Linda.  "One can see
the ectoplasmic cord connecting the form to Rhinehart.  He is clearly visible
sitting entranced within the cabinet."

    "These photographs were taken under strict test conditions administered by
police officers and psychic researchers."  Over 500 people were in the
audience.

    After the pictures were passed round, Madame Portillo's two daughters and
the fiance of the elder one joined the group.

    "Up to this point, a large, rather menacing bodyguard from our previous
escort was present," said Linda.  "Madame Portillo dismissed him, but Keith
assured her it was quite all right if he stayed."

    "Madame Portillo thanked the medium, but preferred to have the seance
without the guard present."

    Rhinehart was entranced by one of his spirit guides, Dr. Robert John
Kensington.  Evidential spirit messages were comminucated.

    "Each person in Madame Portillo's group received one from a relative or
friend in the spirit world," said Linda.  "The elder daughter was so moved
by her message that tears flowed freely."

    "The fiance was surprised to receive a message from a friend who died a
violent death."

    Madame Portillo and others present received "many evidential messages".
Then Keith returned to normal from his trance state.

    He announced that his guides were preparing for a voice seance.

    "Two blankets, supplied by Madame Portillo, were taped across a corner
of the room to create a cabinet," said Linda.  "Before entrying, Rhinehart
took water from a glass into his mouth."

    "Tape was placed over his mouth by Madame Portillo."  The tape was marked
with a pen.  The marks went on to Rhinehart's face.  The President's wife
signed her initials as an added precaution.

    "Only then could the medium enter the cabinet," said Linda.  "Shortly
after Keith did so, a deep vioce was heard from behind the blankets.  It
addressed Madame Portillo."

    The messages were concerned with her role in Mexico.  Guidance on certain
matters was given from the Other Side.

    When Keith left the makeshift cabinet, before the tape was removed, Madame
Portillo checked it.

    "She found it had not been moved of tampered with in any way.  It was then
removed."

    As Keith expelled the water held throughout the voice seance in his mouth,
"dozens of apports came from his mouth, cheeks, eyes and ears."
    Linda was less than three feet from Keith when a "tiny white crystal
appeared in the corner of his left eye."
    "As I and others stood watching, it grew to two inches in width."
    "The apports were of various shapes and sizes.  There were pendants, rings,
and small and large crystals of various colours."

    Madame Portillo was delighted with the results, admitting she never
expected to witness such spectacular and evidential phenomena.

    As Rhinehart and others left the palace, Keith "walked boldly up to the
armed guards and gave each in turn one of the small apports that had
materialized."
    "I can only speculate what thoughts were coursing through those proud
guards' minds as we departed."

    Keith was invited back to the palace to give healing to Madame Portillo's
"immediate family".

    Linda, of Anchorage, Alaska, said that Madame Portillo has since been in
touch with Rhinehart's church and is studying the spirit teachings received
through his mediumship.

    Linda's typed report was transcribed by William K. Erickson, to whom she
narrated the account.
    Erickson, of 35th Avenue, Seattle, received his BA degree in English
Literature from Washington University in 1967.
    He is now secretary to the board of directors of Keith's Aquarian Foundation
which is Seattle-based.

Madame Portillo, then First Lady of Mexico:

        SHE TESTIFIES TO FIRST LADY'S GRATITUDE FOR HER MESSAGES

    American Marilou McIntyre acted as courier to bring PN the presidential
seance account.  She spent one night in London before flying on to Egypt.

    Marilou, of Portland, Oregon, was present at the Mexico City sitting.
She subsequently made an affidavit.

    Madame Portillo, it says, "expressed her gratitude for the evidential
messages given to her and for those to be relayed to her husband."
    "She was also appreciative of the spiritual healing given.  Another
family member expressed heartfelt relief as a result of some of the things
said to her by Rhinehart."

    Marilou first heard about the medium when working at a psychological
testing clinic.

    A man visited her and introduced himself as being from Keith's Aquarian
Foundation.  Marilou had never heard of it.  She then knew nothing about
Rhinehart.

    An unusual story unfolded.  At a seance one of the man's guides supplied
Marilou's name and address and where she worked.  He was asked to visit her.

    "I thought it was a gimmick." said Marilou.  "I'd never investigated
mediumship or Spiritualism".
    "It was so bizarre.  So I went to one of the foundation's meetings out of
curiosity."

    Though she supplied a question in a sealed envelope for her first seance,
details came about matters which were not mentioned.  Marilou was convinced
that spirit communication was a reality.  She continued attending meetings.

    Since her first Aquarian Foundation contact 15 years ago, she has
witnessed the full range of Keith's psychic gifts.

    At one physical seance some of the materialised forms built "from the
base upwards. Some only showed their tops."
    Marilou's brother, who passed at age 27, appeared at one sitting.  "He
materialised outside the cabinet."
    At some of Keith's voice seances, "you can hear the trumpets banging
against the ceiling, which is now dented.
    "Sometimes they will go into the audience and touch the person to be
addressed."

        TV CAMERAS FILM THIS UNIQUE PHENOMENA

    One witness of Keith's Mexico seances reported that on two occasions
"hundreds" of super-normally obtained stones appeared as apports from
Rhinehart's face, ears and mouth.  At one session the phenomena was captured
by TV cameras.

    The account is written by Weston D. Bailey, who was also present when the
medium paid his two visits to the presidential palace.

    Bailey said that the demonstrations Keith gave in Acapulco and Mexico
City "were beyond the expectations of the staff and close associates who
accompanied the medium."

    At one Acapulco meeting those present included the mayor, his wife,
"and dignitaries close to the First Family of Mexico".

    "Acapulco's former police chief joined the Aquarian Foundation."  Hundreds
attended the demonstration held at the Condesa Del Mar hotel.  Since Rhinehart
speaks no Spanish, an interpreter transmitted the many messages that began to
flow.

    "Rhinehart called out full names of individuals in the audience."  He did
likewise for the spirit communicators.

    When one of his guides could not pronounce a name in Spanish, it was
spelled.

    "There were much weeping and joy as time after time accurate evidence was
given to sitters."

    The medium, said Bailey, demonstrated psychometry "for almost seven hours."

    The highlight came when Rhinehart entered the seance cabinet.  "Further
evidence and communications continued to flow."  The spirit-supplied details
were "nothing short of magnificent."

    "Finally Rhinehart emerged from the cabinet, on which were trained TV
cameras.  Suddenly white gems and multi-coloured stones of many descriptions
began to materialise."

    These emerged from the medium's eyes, mouth and facial area.

    "Literally hundreds of magnificently beautiful stones materialised before
the astounded audience and were captured on film by the TV crew.

    At Mexico City Keith demonstrated mental mediumship to over 300 people for
12 hours, "taking one 15-minute break during the entire meeting".

    Again "hundreds of white, multi-coloured and faceted gemstones materialised
from Keith's eyes, mouth and face."

    Bailey and his wife Kathleen lead the Honolulu, Hawaii and Hollywood
branches of the Aquarian Foundation.

    This sounds like a very impressive demonstration, and I appreciate your
    making this account available to us.
    
    Please take the following comments in the spirit they are meant in.  I
    believe that people have indeed demonstrated psychic abilities, and I
    have no ready non-paranormal explanation for everything that was
    described as taking place here.  But there are some caveats that are
    important.
    
    First off, people who are trained in investigating claims of psychic
    phenomena generally call themselves "psychical researchers" rather than
    "psychic researchers".  The latter term would refer to someone who
    uses psychic abilities to do research.  I am suspicious of the
    qualifications of anyone who calls themselves a "psychic researcher".
    This may, of course, simple be the failing of the person who did the
    transcription (apparently William K. Erickson), rather than Ms. Dunn's.
    
    Second, investigation of such claims is quite a difficult undertaking
    which involves a lot of knowledge of the methods of the fakes.  There
    are very few completely qualified investigators.  Off hand I have never
    heard of Ms Dunn.  There are certainly qualified investigators I have
    never heard of, but the point is, there are many unqualified people who
    call themselves psychical researchers (or, in some cases, psychic
    researchers).  We really have no assurances that any qualified
    investigators were there.
    
    Third, there are *no* such thing as "fraud-proof precautions".  We can
    only set up conditions under which fraud is unlikely.  I question the
    competence of any investigator who believes that they have established
    "fraud-proof" rather than "fraud-resistant" conditions.  Again, the
    fault here may actually lie with Mr. Erickson rather than Ms Dunn.
    
    Fourth, the tape would seem to be rather easy to get around,
    particularally since no strip search by a qualified investigator is
    mentioned.  Some additional details, not mentioned in the report, might
    convince me that the tape control would have required a very skilled
    fraud to circumvent, but what is described here would be quite
    routinely handled by your average fraudlent psychic (which is *not* to
    say that Rev. Rhinehart is that, only that the tape control by itself
    does not allow us to prove that he is not).
    
    Fifth, there is not really enough detail here to be really convincing
    evidence.  How, just as one example, was the guest list for the seance
    drawn up?
    
    Let me emphasize once more.  I am *not* wasting my or your time by
    doubting this impressive demonstration.  I am not even denying that it
    may have been of very good evidential quality for those present.  What
    I am saying is that, somewhat inevitably in such a brief report, the
    *report itself*, as interesting as it is, does not provide good
    evidence.  There is just too much that could have taken place, which
    untrained observers would not have spotted, and which this report
    does not provide us with enough information to be sure there wasn't

This is just one of many, many, many seances.  A lot of seances were done in
scientific labs under strict scientific conditions (for example, the
experiments of Dr. Helmut Schmidt - then head scientist for Boeing, and
the experiments done at the University of Osaka, Japan, and the blood-chemistry
experiments of Dr. Alan Kenney).  The public seances were done with the best 
control situations available for the given circumstance.

        BIBLICAL MIRACLE DUPLICATED
        WATER TURNS INTO WINE AT ASTOUNDING SEANCE
        POLICEMEN, SCIENTISTS, DOCTORS, AND NURSES WITNESS PHENOMENON

    A state-employed nurse last week relived the seance-room spectacle of
water turning into wine.  Strict test conditions were imposed at this public
session which involved two mediums.  Police officers were present, placed at
strategic positions.  Doctors and scientists also witnessed the phenomenon.

    For S African Patricia Brown it was a once-in-a-lifetime psychic
experience - and abundant evidence that biblical "miracles" can be duplicated
today.

    She even sampled the wine, her tastebuds registering the "sweetish taste.
There was also a distinct bouquet."

    Patricia, 32, of Delarey Road, Rivonia, Sandton, Johannesburg, called at
PN a few hours before returning to S Africa with her young son, Christopher,
ten.

    Patricia, a clairvoyant and clairaudient, is a member of the First All
Healing Spiritual Church of Soweto.  It is affliated with Keith Milton
Rhinehart's Aquarian Foundation in Seattle, Washington.

    Keith was one of the two mediums involved in the water-into-wine seance.
The other was Mona Ndzekeli, of the Soweto church.

    The seance occurred in Settle, where the foundation held a banquet.  Mona
and Keith wre placed in adjoining cabinets.

    Keith was searched by policeman Stephen Young, whoe told (PN November 11,
1978) of seeing the medium supernormally produce "hundreds of small gemstones".
How these apports appeared is described in an accompanying story.

    After the seance-cabinets had been examined, two police officers stood
behind them.

    "Before the cabinets were placed a ring of tables which formed a barrier,"
said Patricia.  Thus no one could enter or leave them.

    Psychic researchers, including doctors, nurses, and scientists numbering
about ten, were asked to fetch a bowl of water from the hotel's kitchens.  This
was at the request of one of Keith's spirit guides.

    "The water started changing from the center," said Patricia.  "It bubbled.
First it was pink.  Then it turned into red wine."
    "The audience were invited to sample the wine.  It had a sweetish taste, not
very fruity but pleasant."
    "There was a distinct bouquet."

    Patricia also recalled the phenomena she witnessed via Keith's mediumship
two years earlier when he visited S Africa in 1973.
    "That was when I saw him for the first time," she said.  "I attended every
seance."

    At one there were several materialisations.  From her hands a spirit figure
produced "what I call white fire.  The substance was like flame but not red and
yellow."
    "There was also a huge Red Indian who materialised."
    One of the medium's guides spoke in several African dialects, including
Zulu, Xhosa, and Tswana.
    "He gave messages with tremendous evidence to Coloured sitters.  The
Africans were amazed with their communications."

    Patricia described phenomena in daylight at the church.  From Keith's
eyes, mouth and chin were materialised what she called "sacred apports of
crystal".

    The nurse touched down in Britain on her way back from the US where she
lectued in Miami, Dallas, Los Angeles, Seattle and Portland, and also Hawaii.
During her five-week visit she delivered 12 speeches.

    Patricia became involved in Spiritualism after joining a developing circle
and unfolding her own psychic gifts.

    "I always had inclinations towards psychic matters," she said.  "It
progressed from there."
    "I became involved in the Soweto church."

    The first time she witnessed Keith's apport ability was at Johannesburg's
YMCA Hall.
    Stones "of all different colours" appeared.  They emerged from the medium's
mouth, cheeks and eyelids.
    "The floor was covered with them," said the nurse/  "About 500 people were
attending that night."

    Patricia is the only white member of the Soweto church, the first to be
state-registered in that area.

    "One of the major functions is healing," she said.  "Mona is a healer."
    "Healing is given four times weekly.  Mona also performs exorcisms and
helps rescue the earth-bound."

    The medium also has the gift of direct voice.  In February 1973 a cabinet
was installed in the church.  Four months later spirit voices came.
    Patricia said "wonderful" messages have been received, "in English and
several African languages.
    "The only thing in the cabinet is a bowl of water.  People are invited to
search the cabinet before seances.
    "Mona was responsible for giving me evidence from my father.  He spoke to
me.  His voice was recognisable."

    Patrica has been a church member for almost six years.
    The church has about 200 adult members.  A Sunday school attracts around
80 children.
    Patricia explained that in African households the father is the psychic
head.  Children describe their dreams for him to interpret.
    But Mona's husband, Lawrence, the church's pastor, symbolically transferred
this right to Mona.  According to the nurse, Spiritualism is gradually
spreading among the Bantu people.

        POLICE OFFICER TESTIFIES ON OATH
        HUNDREDS OF APPORTED STONES APPEAR FROM MEDIUM'S MOUTH

    In his dramatic affidavit, police officer Stephen Young testified to
seeing "hundreds of small gemstones" supernormally appearing from Keith's
mouth and eyeballs.

    Young said over 200 witnesses attended this test seance.  He watched the
stones emerge at a 6ft vantage point.  He was "in a position to observe the
phenomenon accurately."

    The seance cabinet Keith used was open to search.  Rigorous precautions
were taken.  After filling his mouth with water, the medium invited a sceptic
to place and sign a piece of adhesive tape over his lips.

    As a second precaution, Keith retained the water in his mouth.  Even though
he could not talk, spirit voices came.

    When Keith left the cabinet, the sceptic who applied the test conditions
examined the tape.

    Young's affidavit stated the man verified to the audience "that the tape
over the medium's mouth had not been removed or altered in any way."

    The controlling guide removed the tape and ejected the water from Keith's
mouth into a glass.

    Suddenly gemstones were apported through the medium's "mouth and eyeballs".

    Young noticed "several protruding small lumps beneath the skin of
Rhinehart's throat and face.

    "As an experienced investigator I knew these were signs of physically
materialised objects that were apported into Rhinehart's body."

    "These small lumps worked their way beneath the skin into Rhinehart's mouth
and eyeballs."

    Young affirmed that "hundreds of small gemstones" appeared at the seance.

    Young and fellow police officer David Silberstein searched Rhinehart
"internally and externally" when Keith demonstrated at an international
convention in Seattle.  Over 500 Spiritualists from more than 28 countries
watched his demonstrations.

    The details were given to PN by another S. African Spiritualist, Nicholas
Leonsons, who attended the conference.

    The police frisking occurred in a room where additional security guards
and scientific researchers "stationed themselves at all entrances and exits and
kept a close vigil."

    At one seance a spirit form materialised.  A doctor and a nurse from the
audience felt the pulse.  It was faster on the side checked by the medico.

    Then the form changed the pulse rates round before disappearing.

    "Strict test conditions were observed throughout," said Nicholas.  "Police
officers guarded the cabinet Rhinehart used."

    objects coming through his body feels like?  Does he physically

    Linda, if the purpose of my note had been to attack the genuineness of
    Rev. Rhinehart, then your citations of other better controled studies
    would have been relevant.  But that is not my purpose and so those
    citations were irrelevant.  What I was saying was that to someone
    unfamiliar with the sophisticated techniques that fraudulent mediums
    use, this report would seem like very strong evidence that the Rev.
    Rhinehart is not a fraud.  In fact, the only part of the report which
    has much of any evidential quality at all is the description of the
    tiny crystal which visibly grew -- and even that is only slight
    evidence.
    
    Once again, my comments are *not* about Rev. Rhinehart at all, nor
    the general value of this report as a description of phenomena produced
    by a psychic practioner whose genuineness may have been well validated
    under other conditions.  They are *only* about the value of *this*
    report as *evidence for Rev. Rhinehart's genuineness*.
    
    I admire Dr. Schmidt, now of the Mind-Science Foundation, greatly for
    his work in laboratory parapsychology.  But I do not know what his
    qualifications are as an investigator of psychic claims -- these are
    quite different skills.  Moreover his qualifications back then, before
    he had become active in the parapsychological/psychical-research
    community are even more open.  Being "head scientist for Boeing"
    simply does not constitute qualifications.  This is important to
    remember -- in some ways being a scientist interferes with ones
    abilities to detect fraud unless one has specialized training.  Do
    not ever be impressed with a persons general scientific credentials as
    qualifications for psychical research.
    
    As for "psychic researcher" being commonly used in Great Britain, it
    is also commonly used in the US -- but generally not by qualified
    researchers.  Just as an example, the major scientific organization
    devoted to such research in Britain is The Society for Psychical
    Research.
    
    The point is not in the least moot.  Part of the apparent evidential
    quality of this report is the supervision by a "psychic researcher"
    and the presence of others (which we are told nothing about).  But
    *anybody* can take an interest in investigating psychic claims, and
    without any qualifications but an abiding trust in their own ability to
    spot a fraud, can start calling themselves a psychic or psychical
    researcher.
    
    Like any other field of research, qualifications for psychical research
    come about by building on the experience of others.  One must be
    intimately familiar with the phenomena -- natural and fraudulant --
    which have in the past been found to mimic real psychic functioning,
    and the methods which have been used to reveal that it was or was
    not those mimicing phenomena.  To become familiar with this one has
    to be familiar with the work done by other qualified researchers both
    through personal contact and through reading.  One of the ways to
    identify people who have that familiarity is whether they understand
    the language which has grown up to communicate within the relevant
    scientific community.  If someone who claims to be a physicist were to
    use "push" instead of "force", I would be very suspicious of their
    qualifications.  Similarly, anyone who refers to themselves as a
    "psychic researcher" has demonstrated a likely ignorance of the
    relevant vocabulary, and therefore of the relevant knowledge.  They
    are either relying on their own experience and wit (which is simply
    not sufficient, however clever the person is) or they have been
    trained by an organization which is not scientific -- however honest
    and well-meaning.

    Off hand, I do not know.  A friend of mine spent a lot of time with
    Keith, so the next time I speak to her I'll ask her.  I vaguely 
    remember her saying something about how Keith "sort of went elsewhere"

    so I could be mistaken....

    I have read many articles from the British Society of Psychical Research
    and its American counterpart, and by investigators connected with these
    groups, I have seen the term "psychic research" used interchangeable with 
    "psychical research".  And we can discuss this over and over again, 
    without ever reaching any conclusions instead of discussing the important 
    points of the articles that have been keyed in.  I do not think that
    your comparison with "push" vs. "force" is accurate at all, but this
    is my opinion.  I agree with you that a likely ignorance of the
    relevant vocabulary CAN indicate a likely ignorance of relevant
    knowledge, but this is definitely, in my opinion, more of a case of 
    "preference" rather than an indication of qualifications.  From my 
    readings, the terms are used interchangeably.

    Another thing to keep in mind is that what I have keyed in are articles
    from a newspaper that is geared towards a "layman".  The newspaper is
    not a "scientific journal", and therefore the articles are written as
    such.  From my understanding, the seances/parapsychology tests which
    were done in the labs were published in certain scientific journals.
    I do have a copy of one of Dr. Schmidt's synopsis of one of the experiments
    done on Keith.  I believe the experiment was a PSI experiment using an
    atomic clock.  I'll see if I can dig up my copy.....  If it's not too long,
    I'll key it in when I have time....

    Ectoplasmic materialisations have been photographed many times and a
remarkable example is seen in the series of photographs of Reverend Keith
Milton Rhinehart, the outstanding American medium who founded the Aquarian
Foundation in Seattle, USA.  These were taken during the International
Spiritual Convention (October 31-November 7 1975) at the Olympic Hotel,
Seattle, Washington, USA.

    Reverend Rhinehart who was searched bodily by police officers Stephen
Young and David Silverstein, sat in a seance cabinet which had been thoroughly
examined and was guarded by the two police men who stood behind it.  About 500
people from over 28 different countries watched and many took photographs in
the seance room which was illuminated throughout by either ordinary white
lights or by the light of 12 40-W lamps and was not at any time blacked out.
In the photographs shown here ectoplasm can be seen pouring from Rhinehart's
mouth and solar plexus until it forms a pool at his feet.  One sitter, whose
head clearly shows as she watches the amazing spectacle, illustrates how
close the witnesses were stationed during the materialisations.

    The mediumship of Keith Milton Rhinehart has been demonstrated and
photographed on many other occasions too.  In 1958 a committee of Japanese
scientists made a thorough investigation of his mediumship, even going to the
extent of having a special foolproof chair designed and built which they
claimed precluded the possiblity of physical interference with the phenomena
which Reverend Rhinehart produced.

    The manifestations that appeared during this series of seances and
experiments were photographed with infra-red motion picture film and still
pictures were also taken of them.  One of these phtotgraphs shows a wide tape
of ectoplasmic substance, about 4 or 5 ins wide, that flows from Rhinehart's
solar plexus down to the floor and up on to the top of an adjacent table
and forms a small three-fingered hand-like structure which is gripping a
pencil and writing.  At the end of the experiments this group of Japanese
scientists, who included chemists, physicists and prominent researchers in
other fields, stated that they were fully convinced of the honesty of both
Rhinehart and the phenomena that were produced through his mediumship.

    Reverend David Benson, the Spiritual leader of the Miami branch of the
Aquarian Foundation Ltd, showed me a large album of photographs of the
manifestations and other phenomena which have been taken at Rhinehart's
seances, a number of which he and his wife, Janice, have witnessed personally
and I have many more in my own files.

investigators that have investigated Keith's mediumship:

    Dr. Helmut Schmidt, Ph.D. - researched Rev. Rhinehart and made the
    following comments in the British equivalent of "The Scientific
    American", "The New Scientist": "..Keith Rhinehart....got significant
    scores.  In fact, the probability of obtaining such high scores by chance
    was less than one in 500 million".   Dr. Schmidt later wrote, while on
    staff of the Institute for Parapsychology, "I am still thankful for my
    luck to have met the Aquarians".

    Dr. Moshe Baharav, Ph.D., Ps.D., Fr.V., President of Sodom Salt Mines,
    American Israel Salt Corporation, Israel Mineral and Medical Corporation,
    and the United Israel Brotherhood Lodges, wrote: "Rev. Rhinehart is the
    World's Greatest Medium".

    Dr. Aly Rady, Ph.D., of Cairo, Egypt called Rev. Rhinehart "A Modern
    Miracle in Egypt".

    Dr. Gina Cerminara, Ph.D., and famous author, (books about Edgar Cayce,

    phenomena cannot be explained away, or duplicated, by ventriloquism,
    magician-tricks, or stage illusion.  Rev. Rhinehart is the greatest

    phenomena seance at Electricraft Studio in Seattle, in which voices 
    manifested in the full light, exhibiting tremendous range of personality, 
    inflection and pitch, under scientifically controlled conditions, with no

    The famous expert in computer science, the late Neil MacFarlane, graduate
    in Physics and Mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology,
    Seattle University, etc., and a professor at the American School at Rome,
    Italy, wrote that Rev. Rhinehart has been able to bring back the
    personality, consciousness and soul of Albert Einstein to him through
    physical phenomena.  Neil MacFarlane obtained such outstanding personal
    proof that he became a member of the Aquarian Foundation.  He was a member
    of the Board of Directors and headed the Scientific Research Committee
    of the Aquarian Foundation until his passing.

    Dr. W.G. Roll, Ph.D., Project Director of the Psychical Research Foundation
    in North Carolina, wrote: "I think it is much to your credit that you
    collaborated in the experiments of Dr. Helmut Schmidt and it must give
    you some satisfaction to see that your psychical abilities have been
    verified under such good conditions."

    Dr. Gilbert Holloway, Ph.D., graduate of Stanford University and noted
    write and lecturer, wrote that he was convinced that a dead friend, Paul
    Buecheler; the Ascended Master, Koot Hoomi; Dr. H. Spencer Lewis of
    Rosicrucian fame (his former father-in-law); and Madame Blavatsky: had
    all communicated with him through Rev. Rhinehart, under test conditions.

    Harry D. Wheeler, psychic researcher and former scretary of Dublin's
    Spiritualists' Association in Ireland, wrote in 1972 that the most
    successful and best attended meeting in the history of the Association
    was Rev. Rhinehart's meeting.  He further wrote: "You are by far the
    most outstanding medium I personally have encountered."

    Famous scholar, writer and psychic researcher, Edmond Bentley, who holds
    a M.A. degree from Cambridge University, investigated Rev. Rhinehart and
    wrote glowing reports in South Africa.

    Linda, I really am not trying to pick a fight.
    
    I realize that the demonstration you first posted was not a
    "scientific" test (though the report seemed to imply that it was) nor
    that the report was a scientific report.  There are certainly things
    which do not constitute scientific proof which nevertheless present
    reasonable evidence for a rational individual to reach a conclusion.
    Perhaps the event described in the report was such a thing.  My point
    was simply that the *report* itself is not.  It is an interesting
    document about the phenomena which Rev. Rhinehart produces,
    particularly if *other* evidence validates his reality, and once again
    I thank you for posting it.
    
    The point is not whether or not Rev. Rhinehart is genuine.  The point
    is that a reasonable person cannot conclude that he is genuine on the
    basis of this report.  We are not talking about strict "scientific
    requirements of proof", but simple requirements of rational personal
    evidence.  To put it bluntly, if you find *this* report a convincing
    reason to believe in Rev. Rhinehart, then you *could* be duped by
    a fraud rather easily (I am *not* saying that you have been).  A
    skilled fraud could have done things which would have resulted in a
    report very much like this one being written up.
    
    If you consider this one, tiny piece of evidence constituting, say
    1/10,000 the evidence necessary to make a convincing case that the
    Rev. Rhinehart is genuine, then we have absolutely no disagreement.
    If you consider this merely an interesting description of his abilities
    and not evidence at all, then we have even less disagreement.  If you
    are not concerned with evidence, but with faith, then I am not one
    of those who sneer at faith just because I don't share it.  But if
    you consider this report to constitute substantial evidence for his
    genuiness *then* (and only then) we have a disgreement.
    
    Your testimonials are quite interesting.  The ones which count are
    the one from the magician (which says only that he is either doing
    something real or doing something sophisticated, since magicians
    *do* fool each other on a regualr basis -- if you can get in, visit
    the Magic Castle sometime and watch it happen -- but that *is*
    something important to establish), the one from the ventriliquist
    (which says, once again, that he is not doing something routine, at
    least), and far and away the most important, the one from Bill Roll, the
    only person you have cited who I know is qualified in investigating
    psychics.  It goes a long way with me to know that Dr. Roll apparently
    thinks well of Dr. Schmidt's controls.
    
    I don't want to argue the "psychic researcher" vs "psychical
    researcher" thing into the ground.  If you are right and I am wrong and
    the former phrase is used by qualified researchers in Britain then
    my point is weakened somewhat, but not eliminated (since the person
    in question is in Anchorage Alaska).  If, on the other hand, I am right
    then using the "wrong" term labels the user as someone who is probably
    ignorant of the correct term, and therefore probably ignorant of much
    else that a qualified investigator *has* to know.  The point was not a
    strong one in any case since the phrase may have been inserted by the
    transcriber.
    
    All I can say is that I frequently read the Journal of the Society for
    Psychical Research (which is British but is *not* called the British
    Society for Psychical Research, just to clarify for anyone who is
    interested).  Much of the journal is taken up with letters from
    correspondants about things which they have witnessed or reports they
    have collected from witnesses.  Not infrequently they may refer to
    themselves or others as psychic researchers.  Generally, however, they
    have no particular qualifications for research except an interest.  I do
    not ever remember hearing a British researcher who I considered qualified
    refer to themselves or others as "psychic researchers" either in the
    Journal of the SPR, in talks, in personal conversations or elsewhere; but
    it is possible I just missed it.  I am, of course, a member of the
    American Society for Psychical Research.  Its journal is much more
    formal then its British counterpart, and if you have an article there
    refering to a "psychic researcher" I would be rather surprised.
    
    Anyway, keep up the interesting postings, and don't let my caveats
    about their *evidential* quality discourage you or make you feel picked

There are new study groups in San Diego, California, Phoenix, Arizona,
Las Vegas, Nevada, and Vanuatu in the South Pacific.

The Denver study group is now an official branch.

New study groups are planned for Chicago, Illinois, Washington, DC, 
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and other areas.

The Boston study group is growing rapidly and we hope to be an official
