876.0. "Do they work? Is it possible?" by RAINBW::CATALANO (Careful, You might catch My Dream) Thu Sep 29 1988 18:03

    			Hope you can help!
    Hi,

I'm new to this file, tho I have read it faithfully, this is a first
for me. And I figured if I could get some help it would be here.

The reason I'm writing is because of my Mom. You see she has alot
of things wrong with her, from Diabetes, Arthritis, and problem
with her eyes. She is in pain most every day. She has also suffered
    through two mild strokes.

They had told her recently that she needed an opertations on her
hip. Which they changes, said she didn't need one. We're all happy
about that, but it doesn't change the Fact that she is suffering
every day. Most nights she can't sleep because of it.
After all the doctors she has seen through the years she gets
sick of going and taking the new pills. Always New Pills...ugh...

Well, to get to the point. Last night I went to an ESP workshop
in New Hamsphire. There were some people there who were said to
be Healers, (laying of the hands) one for them was Bob Miller.
He has a place in Reading Ma. I have heard of this many times,
but haven't really thought about it having anything to do with me.

I know there is a note in here someplace about Healing, but I couldn't
seen to find it. After listening to her pain today, I WANT to do
something, even if to her its off the wall.

Does/has this worked? Do you think it would work for her? Is there
any kind of thing I can get her to wear/use that would help at all.
I can't believe I just asked that question. But I do want to see
if she can have at least a couple of days without, the pain, be
able to do the things she did before. She is a fighter, and won't
let it get her down, but sometimes even she has to stop because
    of what she is feeling....

Can ANYONE out there help. So she will smile alittle more...

I thank you for reading this, and for any help we can get

    Hi Helena,

There are two people I know of who work with healing and are
of high integrity. One is Father Angelo Rizzo, a healer,
theologian, licensed psychologist, author and teacher. He is
the author of "I Believe Using Mind Power" and "We Are All
Healers". You can contact Ida Myers at 617-277-8996 for info
on contacting Father Rizzo. The other person is Dr. Bernie
Siegel, who has done a number of healing workshops and lectures
at Interface in Newton. He is a surgeon, clinicial professor
of surgery, lecturer and author. He wrote the bestseller
"Love, Medicine and Miracles". If you contact Interface at
617-924-1100 they may have an address/phone number for
    Dr. Siegel.

Hope this is of some assistance to you and your mother.

876.3It does work.PBSVAX::COOPERTopher CooperThu Sep 29 1988 19:4833
There is no question in the mind of any informed person that healing
works, some of the time, and occasionally spectacularly. The only
    argument is *how* it works.

There are two very important privisos:

    1) Healing is complementary to mainstream medical procedures, not
an alternative. It is particularly important not to take a temporary
or even permanant relief of pain as an indication that the problem
is cured. The healing procedure may only result in symptomatic
relief -- extremely worthwhile, obviously, and may allow decreased
use of pain-killers, but until a doctor says so the patient should
assume that there is still something wrong with them and they should
continue treatment and avoid activity which might be harmful. I'm
not just being a "skeptic" here, I have heard a number of first
    hand horror stories.

    2) Expensive healers are no more effective overall then inexpensive
ones. Forget any healer, however well recommended or by whom, who
requires (or "strongly suggests") a particular fee. Figure out
in advance how much you are willing to pay per hour for their time
even if "nothing happens". Then figure out how much you think is
reasonable (not "that you are willing to pay", but reasonable) for
various outcomes (relief of pain for a week, partial relief of pain
for a week, relief of pain for a day, doctor certified cure, etc.).
You may want to make this proportional to the amount of time the healer
spends, also. After the healing session, if you are pleased with
the way you were treated, etc., give them the even-if-nothing-happens
fee. Wait a week or more before deciding to send them the additional
    "success fee".

I second Carole on the recommendation for Dr. Bernie Siegel.

Illness, I believe, is a combination of the mind and body. Some
focus solely on the mind, while others (traditional medicine) has
focused solely on the body. Chronic pain is hard to suffer though
    - I've been there, but not with what your mother suffers from.

You might want to check in the HOLISTIC conference as they might
have some suggestions there as well.

Helena,

> ...... I do want to see
> if she can have at least a couple of days without, the pain, be
> able to do the things she did before.

These words came right from your heart. I never read books about everyone being
a healer as mentioned in reply 1, but I am sure that the way you feel about your
mother, already helps her.

There is, however, something that I want to say to you, especially when I read
the part of your note that I copied in here. I recognize it. But is this really
what you want? (The following may sound cynic, but it is not meant like that at
all). Imagine that you heal her. You take away her pain. I agree with Topher:
there is a *high* probability that you take away the symptoms, and leave the
cause. So after the effects of healing have been gone, your mother will get the
pain back. Then she may want more. More healing. What will that do to the cause
of the illness? Nobody knows.

I am not opposing the idea of contacting a healer. No, please do! But ask the
healer how he thinks about this. I know it will feel cynical when you ask
questions like "Will my mother be dependent upon you after a while" or "Have you
ever been interested in your customers after you have stopped your treatment",
but only by asking questions like these, you yourself may be convinced that he
really can do to your mother what you want to be done to her.

> She is a fighter, ......

Yeah, and you too! I personally think you already do more for her than any
healer can do!

876.6Yes, it does work.COMICS::SHARMAFri Sep 30 1988 10:0646
Yes, yes and yes. It does work but yuo have to believe in it and
give it a wholehearted try. If you do not believe in it, fine as
long as you do not put up anything negative towards it.

I have a true story to tell about this. Around 1974 I used to lodge
with a Latvian landlady. Her moods changed like quiksilver. Rent
was slightly on the high side and food was regular but it was of
very good quality when it was available. Over a period of a few
weeks, I got to know her and discovered that her changing moods
were due to her hip problems. Quite often she could not get herself
out in the morning; she was in agony.

She had had the operation twice but pains had not left her and she
had accepted her fate. She wanted another operation and could not
have it just yet but she was going to push her doctors for it, even
going private. I felt for her and against her belief, her family's
and doctors belief, firmly knew she had nothing wrong with her hip.
Don't ask me why, I just knew it against all odds. What she needed
was faith and healing of a spiritual kind and I used to open my
mouth at every opportunity I had. She thought I was either stupid
or innocent and used to loose my cool.

Time went on and I left the town and just wished her well. About
two or three years later on I went to see her. She had forgotten
me but the dog remembered. That is another story and a year after
that she had moved out of town.

Anyway, I happened to be drinking with a cousin of mine in a village
pub where we were totally unknown and we had never been there before.
There was an old man who started making converstaion with us and
we sat down on a table and started talking away. It turned out that
this man was my Latvian landlady's brother. We talked for sometime
and during this time it came out that my landlady was, now, totally
cured. It was not the operations that cured her, though. Having
spent 7-10 years in and out of operation theatres without any 'fix'
she turned towards faith and spiritual healers. That was about four
years ago. Relief came in after about three months and she has been
    ok since.

So, it does work but one has to have belief and faith or to put
it another way 'let thy be done'.

876.7USAT05::KASPERYou'll see it when you believe it.Mon Oct 03 1988 16:2414
I hope you find something that works for her. The previous statement, about
believing in it, is critical. But, it's not you who has to accept the
procedure, it's your mom. No matter how hard you want it, if her heart is
not in it, it probably won't help. I say this because of your remark
'no matter how off-the-all it is'. In seeking healing help, do it with her.
Don't find one, then 'spring' the idea on her. Prepare her for it and ask
her about how she feels towards the idea. Let her help select the right
person.

My heart goes out to your mother and to you for your caring. I agree with
Arie, that you already are doing much for her by giving your love and
support. Keep it up, and I hope you both find what you are seeking.

I want to thank you all again for your help in this. As of right
now my Mom is in the hospital. She went in Saturday night, she
couldn't stand the pain anymore. I had taken her in Thursday night
because of the pain, they gave her a shot, and she came home. The
next day is was just as bad, so she took herself in that night.
I didn't know she was going in, boy was I surprised. She still
is in pain, and they are giving her shots every 4 hours or so.

She also went into a diabetic coma yesterday morning. The said
her suger was dangerous low, and if she had been home alone... wellllll
I think you all know what would have happen. Anyway, I thank god
    she was in the hospital.

    I thank you all again.

I have talked to her about it, but like now, she isn't paying much
attention to anything except what she is feel. And thats AWFUL

I am just now catching up on my reading. I hope your mother is
feeling better; I'm sure she feels surrounded by the love you're
    expressing--that, in itself, can heal.

Bernie Seigle's book is great and may be inspiring reading for you
    as well as your mother.

You may also want to check out another inspiring book,
Science_and_Health, the text book used by Christian Scientists (written
by Mary Baker Eddy). Christian Science Practitioners are available to
assist patients in overcoming sickness and there are documented cases
of healing of all kinds of diseases (even those deemed incurable) since
the 1800s (when Science_and_Health was introduced).

    Our thoughts are with you.

    Helena,

I hope your mother is feeling better and healing well now.

The Ministry of Prayer is a group of people from the Church of Religious
Science in Los Angeles. If you telephone them, they will do a prayer
treatment for your mother and you and continue daily for 30 days.
There is no charge. And, it is non-denominational as well.

Essentially, what they have done for me when I have contacted them
is spoken words of positive affirmation around wholeness, healing,
love and abundance. They have followed up with, as I mentioned in
the previous paragraph, affirmative prayer for 30 days. They also
sent me a letter to remind me of the prayer treatment and have included
cards with affirmations to use as I please. They have included a
self-addressed envelope and asked for follow-up to let them
know how the situation changes. (I myself have used it to also make
    a small donation -- from $2 up.)

The number is (213) 385-0209. There is also a toll-free number which
I don't have but which you can probably get by dialing 1 (800) 555-1212
and asking for the Ministry of Prayer or the Church of Religious
Science. (If you can't get the number, contact me off-line and I
    will send it to you.)

Best time to call is 6-8 A.M.

I have NEVER had an unsolicited phone call from them (or ANY phone
calls). Occassionally I receive a mailing which is a newsletter
on affirmative prayer and the work of the ministry.

Peace and health and love and light,
    Lois

    Hi,

I want to thank each one of you for your help and the information
you have given me. And I hope to look into each of them.

My Mom is still in the hospital, and she isn't doing that well at
all. We all thought she would be home by this time, but she doesn't
seen to be getting any better, in fact, I'd say that she is the
same or worse. She is depressed because she doesn't feel any better,
and wants to go home. I can't say I blame her.

They are having a hard time with her blood sugar, and that is one
of the things that is keeping her there. The pain in her hip is
just as bad. Nothing seens to help.

So I guess all we can do now is wait, and hope for the best. She
is trying to keep her humor, and is finding things to smile about.

Again all my thanks to you.
