840.0. "Tarot of the Wicca?" by BRUTWO::SOBEK () Wed Aug 24 1988 19:33

I have been looking for "Tarot of the Wicca" without success.
Conflicting stories have said that they are either no longer in
print or that they are available in Japan, but no longer being
imported.... Does anyone know if it is available anywhere??
...Or does anyone have an extra set they are willing to part with??

    Thanks,

I too have been looking for the Tarot of Wicca to give to a friend.
The places I called said it is no longer in print.

A woman I work with, went to Salem Mass. and I asked her to look for
the deck. She asked one of the shopkeepers, who claimed that the
Tarot of Witches deck is the same as the Tarot of Wicca. So, she
brought me the Tarot of Witches deck, personally I think the deck is
rather bland. Whether of not the 2 decks are same, I have no idea.

I've seen the Tarot of the Witches and I agree. It doesn't seem
to be at all like the descriptions I've heard of Tarot of the Wicca.
Some of the places I tried said the set was out of print, however,
The House of Zodiac claimed it was still available in Japan. ...that
it was no longer being imported to the U.S. because they gave
instrutions only in Japanese. I thought some of our DEC Noters
with world-wide connections might know if it was available in Japan
    or elsewhere....

It's a religion associated with witches is the short answer. I believe
the word witch derives from Wicca. Someone here can explain it much
    better than I can.

Wicca is indeed the Old English word for witch. By the time they got
round to Middle English it had evolved to wicche.

Old English covers the period before 1150 while Middle English covers
    1150 - 1500.

Wicca is now used for the religion which witches, who are not of the
Satanic persuasion practice. It is a pagan religion and bases its
belief system on the forces of nature.

                  Joanne,
American Game Systems markets a wide variety of
tarot decks. Tarot_of_the_Wicca may be one of them. A good place to
check is Pyramid Books in Salem, Mass. They have a great mail order
    catlogue. Hope this helps.

    Mark,

US Games does not carry this deck. It was manufactured in
Japan some years ago and is no longer available in the US.

Thanks for the effort. I really appreciate it.

It was U.S. games which marketed this deck when it was available in the
U.S. When I was searching for a copy I called U.S. Games and they were
able to provide me with one that showed up during inventory.

I called many places in the U.S. that sell tarot cards (I received most
of the suggestions from folks in this file) and I was able to locate
another copy of the deck at a store in Colorado. It was their last deck
and I had to pay "collector's price" for it ..but I felt it was worth
    it.

All I can suggest is ..if you really want a copy of the deck try *all*
the stores you can think of ...also some out-of-print book specialists
will search for hard to find decks.

I felt the deck was worth the search ..and enjoyed conversing with the
many folks I talked with along the way.

    Good luck!

    Linda,

I'll keep searching. Have been in touch with bookstores that
sell out of print material and none have any idea about Tarot
    but I didn't lose faith.

I'm in touch with US Games and maybe they can uncover another
    deck sometime.

I contacted a Tarot Newsletter in California too, but that was
    hopeless.

I will continue to check in stores that have been in business
    for awhile.

Have even contacted Wiccan groups and haven't received any
    help from them either.

I do know I will find a deck if I commit myself to being
ready (was told this). Guess I'm not really ready yet.

840.23A similar Tarot deck, perhaps?RPSTRY::EGOLFTue Mar 16 1993 16:2848
I noticed a review of a tarot deck titled the "Tarot of the Old Path",
which may be of interest to some because of the discussion of card styles in
previous notes (Tarot of the Wicca and Tarot of the Witches).

I'm not familiar with the tarot, so I can't personally give an opinion on the
deck. If this is the same as one of those discussed, sorry, as I said,
I'm not familiar with them. This is just FYI because some readers may want
to investigate this deck.

This is from a review by Sandy Crowther which appeared in a news letter for a
mail order company in southern Mass. (I have no connection with the news letter
or the mail order company. I won't post the names here.)

Tarot of the Old Path
(by Sylvia Gainsfield and Howard Rodway)
---------------------

Another of my favorites, Tarot of the Old Path, is destined to become a
classic with tarot lovers, especially among todays modern practioners of
Wicca.

The creation of the deck was assisted by a coven of eight witches from the
United States and England, among them Margot Adler author of the well known
book, "Drawing Down the Moon" and Patricia Crowther, known author and HP.
Using a modern approach to the magic of the Old Religion, the suit of Cups is
appropriately named "Cauldrons". The wood depicted in the Suit of Rods is
known as "Birch", "Willow" and "Ash", all of which have a special symbology to
those who are familiar with the traditional Wiccan path. The other two suits
are the familiar ones of Swords and Pentacles.

Tarot of the Old Path is a positive and magical deck of female wisdom and can
be delightfully stimulating and powerful to the practitioner of the Craft.
The light and warm imagery is certain to elevate your spirits and increase
your intuituve creativity. No visual doom and gloom in this deck!

Some of the Major Arcana have also been named more in keeping with the focus
of Wicca. A few of my favorites are :13 - "The Close"(Death), 20 - "Karma"
(Judgment) and 9 - "The Wise One"(Hermit).

The review goes on to mention a companion book "Tarot of the Old Path" and
some specific layouts that I won't enter here.

The review ends with the statement, Tarot of the Old Path is truly
inspirational for 'self-realization' and a great deck for rituals and spells
for both solitary practitioners and the initiated High Priestess.

    Elaine,

I haven't seen Tarot of the Wicca either, just read about it. It is a
Japanese deck. I believe Tarot of the Old Path is American. There
may be similarities, but I'm not sure.

Tarot of the Witches is not the same as Tarot of the Wicca, but again,
there may be similarities. There is another deck out called The Wiches
Tarot and is not the Wiccan Tarot deck.

I would just love to see the Tarot of the Wicca. Just look at it would
    be a treat.
