as a perfect vessel for Jack O'Lanterning], the following might

[citations in brackets; they're real book titles]. The last one
    tastes _heavenly_.

cake. Cool. Remove sides of pan. Chill. Garnish border with

    chopped walnuts.
(Note: Some prefer to add topping at the time the heat is
increased to 400o so that it is baked with the cake for 10
minutes. The recipe is ambiguous about this.)

    Steve,

Do you have dibs in a pumpkin farm? :^)
Tell ya what - I intend to experiment on a couple of those. I have
a great recipe for a pumpkin quiche - but I'm the only one in the
family that likes it, thank goodness :-)

Actually you have convinced me to try to organise some digits down
under to get together and have fun on 31st October.

Well now that the subject has finally come up, I have a few
questions. Sorry there not about a party or recipes but the Holiday
itself. I've noticed that a couple of Steve Kallis' personal names
have mentioned Hallowe'en, such as "Raise Hallowe'en Awareness"
and he has mentioned that he takes the holiday seriously. (I'm
hoping, Steve, that you know as much about this as everything else.)
Some of my questions are as follows:

    1) What should we all be aware of?!!
    2) When, where, and why was Halloween celebrated? (I've heard
and read that it was a Pagan holiday and a little about what
was being celebrated but would like to know more.)
3 Is it dangerous for children to partake in the evenings events
        (adults as well)?

Should this be dismissed as superstition or taken in a serious
manner? I probably sound a little frightened of Halloween by the
questions I've written and quess I am a bit.

    Thanks

    Mary

    Re .9:

    >1) What should we all be aware of?!!

I've always wanted Hallowe'en to be a _recognized_ national holiday,
like Labor Day, with time off from work and all of that. Just want
people to be more conscious of Hallowe'en as an event; a time for
    celebration and festivities.

    >2) When, where, and why was Halloween celebrated? (I've heard
    > and read that it was a Pagan holiday and a little about what
    > was being celebrated but would like to know more.)

Lots of entertaining writing on this. Primarily, it was derived
from Samhain, a festive holy-day (holiday) marking successful
crop-gathering and in some traditions the end of the old year.
The Medieval church established All Saint's Day on November 1 (to
celkebrate all saints without specific days assigned to them), making
the night before All Hallow's Eve (hallow=revered religious figure),
which by tradition became the time when spirits stirred. That evolved
    into modern Hallowe'en.

    >3 Is it dangerous for children to partake in the evenings events
    > (adults as well)?

Well, since the events _I_ take part in are generally dressing up
and giving out trick or treats, I can't see too much harm to adults.
Children, though, should watch out for "doctored" treats.

    Great! It's a date.

October 31st - time variable, whatever seems best especially for
those of you who would like to take your children and yourselves
around the neighborhoods and attend the party as well.

I'm in the process of moving my office and node from PKO to Nashua,
so if someone would volunteer to take the names of those who Rsvp
Yes, that would be most helpful. I'd like to keep the directions
to my house out of a public notes conference, so the names and nodes
are going to be important to keep track of, and I don't want to
lose anyone's name in the process of moving.

I was thinking that everyone could bring their own drinks and their
favorite recipe, that would probably be the best way to do this. We could
have an early party with dinner items to bring or just a snack/dessert
party if it is later in the evening (after dinnertime).

I'll volunteer to supply the ice and papergoods (plates, cups, napkins
plasticware and so on), along with serving bowls for chips, veggies,
etc. so that nobody will accidently leave their dishes at my house for
    these sorts of items.

Looking for fun ideas to liven up the festivities, so add ideas
here or send them to me directly.

Re: .9...I wish to assure you that at no time, should you ever be
afraid or frightened by any of Halloween's darker characters...the
only ones I know of that exist are witches (the Wiccan kind), and
I understand them to not be evil...and if any of them are, well,
the only power they might have over you is your own fear and belief
of their power. "Fear is the mind killer"...

Remember in the Wizard of Oz when the witch was trying to get Dorothy
to give back the ruby slippers Glinda had just given her? Glinda
said "keep tight inside of them", the witch said, "you stay out
of this, Glinda, or I'll fix you as well"...to which Glinda laughed
(that struck her as funny) and said, "Oh, rubbish! You have no power
here! Now be gone before somebody drops a house on you too."

One tiny candle flame will illuminate a huge cavern of

    Re .9:

About 6 or 7 years ago, on Halloween my daughter decided at the
last minute that she wanted to go out "trick or treating" with friends.
She didn't have time to pull together a costume, so she decided
to go as a ghost, and cut a couple of holes in a white sheet.
After we ate she went to get ready and we could not find the costume
anywhere. I kept saying, this is impossible; it couldn't have just
disappeared. But as time progressed, she pulled together another
costume (I think she was a gypsy or something).

Later I was watching a documentary on Halloween, it's customs, rituals
and superstitions. I don't remember too much of it as I was answering
the door quite frequently during the hour. But a comment that caught
my attention had something to do with spirits being out that night,
and that parents should be careful about what their children go
out as (they especially warned against being "ghosts"). Like I
said, I didn't catch a lot of the program, but even when we moved
out of that place a few years ago, the ghost costume never showed
up. In retrospect it just seemed like one of those interesting,
    but unexplainable events.

Is the Halloween Party going to be costume?

Here is the Pumpkin Quiche recipe. Sorry it took so long but it
was still packed away with some stuff after moving. Enjoy, enjoy!!

    Pastry:

    1 1/2 cups flour
    3 tbls butter
    2 tbls lard
    1/2 tsp salt
    2 tbls cold water

    Filling:

    500g butternut pumpkin
    1 tbls butter
    10 shallots, finely sliced
    salt
    pinch nutmeg and ginger
    3 eggs separated
    1/4 cup cream

    Serves 6

Make your pasty (*must tell you, I buy the already made and rolled
flakey pastry and it is yummy and I never use salt*)

Prepare pumpkin and cook until tender. Drain well and mash. Melt
butter and cook shallots until tender. Add to mashed pumplin with
salt, nutmeg and ginger. Beat egg yolks and add. Beat in cream.
Whisk egg whites until stiff, fold into pumpkin and pour into prepared
pastry. Bake in a preheated 190 degree C oven for 30 minutes until
    well-risen and cooked.

*this dish must be served straight from the oven*

Enjoy and I will be thinking of you on the 31st.

Mostly we talked and ate and just basically had a good time getting
to know each other face-to-face. I'm afraid that, though it was
a great party, there are no good so-and-so-got-drunk-and-put-a-lampshade-
    on-their-head, or so-and-so-got-drunk-and-tried-to-resurect-the-dead
stories. The only real "activity" to recount was the TV show, which
    was only half watched by a few of us (and commented on stingingly;
it was really quite bad, the only high points were Penn and Teller's
act and a few minutes of clips not generally seen from some of
Houdini's movies). So -- a good, quiet party.

Let's see - yes, it was a rather subdued party - no ghosts jumping
    out of closets or anything.

On the other hand, there were some very interesting costumes - and
the most interesting was worn by NATASH::Butchart ('tis amazing
what one can do with duct tape and cardboard...(:^).

The least inventive costume was worn by Bruce Laru, who came in
a plastic glasses/nose/moustache Dave Barry lookalike mask, and
Carl Gerstle came as his mild-mannered self.

There were a couple of skeptics, including Topher and my husband.
Paula Cooper came as a cute child, and given that she is less than
2 ft. tall and not yet 2 years old, she played the part rather well!
Dave Doucette had the most realistic wound on his cheek - quite
gruesome for those (like me) who are not fond of looking at flesh
    wounds.

Carole brought along a crystal, and for the first time I actually
felt some kind of energy (really!). I was duly impressed, and plan
on checking out the rock shop in Westford one of these weekends.

The dogs were let loose for a few minutes, however they were too
much like party animals and were banished soon after racing through
the center of the living room and knocking over a small table with
    drinks on it.

Have to say, DEJAVU'ers are great cooks. There was everything from
wonderful stuffed mushrooms to a cake in the shape of a jack-o'lantern
and some killer salsa dip and other great goodies.

That is about it really - we mostly sat around and talked and got
to know each other, and talked about some of our specialities.

I think we are talking principally about a New England area party
here. That's where the largest single concentration of DEJAVUers
are (not to in anyway belittle the importance of other concentrations
and "isolated" individuals elsewhere). Especially if this is seen
as a continuation of the discussion about meeting the "legendary

Let's straighten this out, Topher. I was not embarrassed for this reason; I was
embarrassed because I seem not to be connected enough to the global DEJAVU brain
to be able to pick it up directly, but still needed the words on the screen.

Now *that*'s really embarrassing, right? ;-)

485.75DEJAWEEN 88 -- Details.ERLTC::COOPERTopher CooperFri Oct 21 1988 19:10107
OK folks. Time to get the ball rolling.

DEJAWeen 88 will be held on Saturday October 29th at my place in
Arlington, Mass. Since no one has said anything one way or the other,
I hereby declare it to include pot-luck supper and to start at 5 PM.
All are welcome, including non-DEJAVU friends, spouses, family, kids of
all ages doppelgangers etc. Let me know if you are coming (and your
best guess as to how many you'll be bringing) and I will send you
directions for getting there. While in notes, while reading this note
you can simply say SEND/AUTHOR, or you can send me mail from MAIL at
    CRA::Cooper or ERLTC::Cooper.

FOOD:

Thanks to both Arthur and Mary for volunteering to help organize
things. The main thing needing organization is food. Since Arthur
seems the most enthusiastic, he's elected (surprise, Arthur). Let
Arthur know what you would like to bring and some alternatives and
he'll try to keep things balanced. The sooner you volunteer the more
likely you are to get to bring what you want. Contact him at

    EXIT26::Saarinen

Nature -- since this is for supper, we'll need a full range of food,
main courses, vegies, desserts, drinks, and noshes for afterwards. Some
attendees are likely to be vegetarian of various levels of strictness,
but people are welcome to bring meat dishes if they wish.

Amount -- Too much food is always brought to these things. Here is the
rule of thumb. Everyone should bring enough of whatever they bring to
fill up on it themselves (including guests) IF they were going to fill
up on nothing else but that one item. Err on the side of *slightly*
too much rather than *slightly* too little, but err as little as
possible. You don't have to bring enough to feed everyone by yourself.

COSTUMES:

This is a Halloween party so costumes are most welcome -- but are not
required. Simple "subtle" costumes are welcome (example, last year I
stuck blinders on my eyeglasses and came as a CSICOP member).

This hasn't been an issue in the past with DEJAVU, but I've been to a
Halloween party where it was a problem so I'll head it off in advance:
if anyone who plans on attending, or thinks they might attend, would be
offended by a "revealing" costume, let me know by mail. I will post a
note to this topic saying that such costumes are forbidden, but keeping
your identity confidential. Unless such a note appears, people can
assume that any state of dress or undress they desire is allowed.

    Which brings us to ...

HOUSE RULES:

Don't break anything, don't steal anything, don't torture the cat,
don't be too obnoxious otherwise, and don't smoke in the house. That's
    about it.

ACTIVITIES:

The main point of these gettogethers are the opportunity for us to
meet with each other face-to-face. So I'm going to keep formal plans
    for activities pretty low key.

DECORATIONS:

I'm not going to do anything elaborate. If you have any interesting,
cute, whatever, Halloween decorations bring 'em along and help set the
    mood.

PUMPKINS:

Last year there was an attempt at a pumpkin carving "contest", which
fell flat basically because people were more interested in talking. If
you want to bring an already carved Jack-O'Lantern, or would like to
bring one or more pumpkins to carve, I'll supply candles. We have a
great place on our front porch for a row of Jack-O'Lanterns if people
    bring them.

SHOW-AND-TELL:

I thought I would set up a book shelf and a table for show-and-tell. If
you have interesting books or objects (crystals, Tarot decks,
ectoplasm, photographs, or whatever) bring them along. I'll supply
tags and file cards so that you can mark DON'T TOUCH or write out any
information you want. Needless to say, although I don't anticipate any
problems, risk of damage or theft is your own. If you want to bring
something along to show but hold onto it and show people personally,
    that's good too.

If anyone has any video tapes that they want to bring, let me know and
I'll set up the TV and VCR someplace appropriate.

MUSIC:

    Musical instruments welcome.

We have a tape-deck and a turntable, but no CD player. Bring any music
you like on a record or tape and we'll accommodate. If you bring a CD
player and cables with your CD's we should be able to plug it in.

OTHERWISE:

Unless anyone can think of anything else, that's about it folks. Please
let us know as soon as possible if you are or even might come, and with
how many. It helps a great deal in planning.

and one child (mine). Definitely above critical mass for a good
party but less than the ideal number. Anyone else? Its this
    Saturday folks.

If anyone is worried about the food requirement -- given notice
I'll accept a promise of cash towards store-bought goodies which
I can select/pick up. You don't have to be able to/have the
    opportunity to cook.

The count stands at 22 adult and one child definites, plus 8 adult
and 2 child maybes. Food list looks yummy so far, but not everyone
has settled yet (even the maybes should decide what kind of thing
they are going to bring if they make it).

Pat Hardy will be (actually is) out of town so can't make it, but
she dropped off a box of various interesting "stuff" which is looking
for a new home. It will be given away at the party to whoever wants
it, first come first serve. The collection includes lots of incense,
several nice incense burners, some books, a deck of Tarot cards
    and some misc. Thanks Pat.

Finally back! What, no party report? OK, here goes...

Wonderful display of a Tesla coil. I was impressed!

Best costume (my opinion) went to Arthur Saarinen and the rubber
snake. (He came dressed as Adam...as in the other half of Eve).

Paula Cooper was in a great tiedye T-shirt and ran around being
the cute kid with the big brown eyes.

Good food, though I came late (travel agent class earlier in the
day), but managed to sample the desserts...especially the pumpkin
    pie and the apple crisp.

Bruce Laru came sporting his recent California tan and was dressed
(or rather undressed) as a surfer.

Jay Jollimore was there and we missed each other AGAIN!!!!

Beth took me on a house tour. It is a beautiful old Victorian home
which is being lovingly restored, room by room.

    Thanks so much, Topher!

Well, he probably had a large fig leaf.

Where would you _expect_ him to put the snake?

    Steve Kallis, Jr.

He probably had it wrapped around an arm, or wore it like unto a
necklace. Ot like a diadem. Lots of places to "put" a snake, for
that matter ... ask any plumber. ;-)

Yes, the Party.
Thanks Topher and thank you Pat for the give-aways.
Paul Cooper is a little doll!
The food was great but the magic plates didn't work. When people put them
down wherever they were through eating I think they had the idea that the
little suckers would walk themselves to the trash. Even though the trash
barrel was conveniently located, the ungrateful little plates just stayed
where they were left.
Cindy probably missed me because of my cape. It's an elven cape, and I'm
not used to it yet. I keep drifting in and out of invisibility. I can
prove I was there tho ;')
I missed the "tour" of the house, but from what I saw it's a beautiful
place. The two fireplaces I saw downstairs are real pieces of work.
Adam was fully dressed. Actualy, Bruce was less dressed than Adam,
sporting that recent west-coast tan.

oh yeah, and the treat of the nite for me was the Dave that played the
wonderful Celtic music, and his wife (I didn't catch your name) who
accompanied him on the guitar while he played that 'new-age' flute piece.
He even taught an Irish guitar piece to MWR and the two of them played a
little dity. Great stuff!

Actually, believe it or not, Paula decided to come to the party
in the costume of a non-cute kid. You should see her when shes
out of costume -- she's the type of kid that when I see one on
a TV show I feel manipulated and turn it off. What's worse,
    she's starting to realize it.

Topher and Beth and Paula; First, for me, thanks for hosting Dejaween88,
sharing your house, and taking the time to treat our children like adult
guests. I must admit, from Tophers' detailed & knowledgable replies in
Dejavu, I expected a Harvard professor in a four-piece suit, not
someone so instantly comfortable with children and strange adults.

For Martha; Had a great time, you made us former strangers very comfortable,
good luck with your rennovations from one who knows. (and waits!)

For David; Thank you for letting me use the computer.

For Katie, Tell them I liked to play with their daughter, I loved her
so much, she was so cute, she was so adorable, and I loved the blocks.

To Dave Pierson, thanks for bringing the Tesla coil and letting us
    play with the lightnings.....	MWR

Did it occur to you that I might have been in costume? Perhaps

485.99Oh yeah - the FIG leaf!SCOPE::PAINTERMy dogma got run over by my karma.Fri Nov 04 1988 19:3915

Y'know John M., last night when I was driving home, the fig leaf
came to mind and remembered I'd forgotten to mention it.

Yes, Arthur was indeed wearing a fig leaf (or a reasonable facsimilie
of one). We teased him about it for quite a while. Alas though, he
was wearing a black body suit (cold New England weather that we
have). Hm...now that I think about it, he was uncorking a bottle
of champagne in the kitchen at one point.......

As for the snake, it was around his neck but ended up going home
with Bruce Laru. The final touch to the costume were the Xmas apple
    ornaments tied around a chain.

The mind reels at what might constitute a 5-piece suit. Pants, Jacket, Vest,
Cummerbund, and....
