| These evolved in the previous network conferences, such as usenet
and mailing lists on the ARPA net. They are fun but they also serve
an important purpose. When you are talking face to face with someone
your expression, posture and tone of voice gives an indication of
how you mean something. In written conferences like these its not
always obvious when you really mean something and when it is a joke.
The most important symbol is therefore just the smiley face
:-)
Which says that you mean what you say as a joke. Assume that if
you don't use the smiley face people will take whatever you say,
however ludicrous, as what you believe. Variant's such as the winking
smile [ ;-) ] are intended to give finer (and less important)
gradations of meaning. Other variant's just add personality and
individuality (e.g., 8-) for smiley-face-and-I-wear-glasses, though
it might also indicate delightful surprise).
Another symbol which can avoid confusion is the frown-face:
:-(
which says, "I'm saying this is true but that doesn't mean I approve.".
There's some discussion of this in the NOTEs documentation.
RE: .3
I like the list, thanks.

| Why is it that some people can recognize the smiley faces, even
when on their sides (the faces, not the noters), while others cannot
make heads or tails of them?
Larry
|
| I know what you mean, Larry, it does seem obvious once you recognize
it. I did not "get it" at first because I started out with an old
VT100. I only assumed that the NOTES program would allow fancy
tricks for those with fancy terminals. I figured that what I was
seeing was a control sequence of some sort.
