307.0. "Crystal Power:P=V**2/R?" by MIST::IVERSON () Mon Feb 09 1987 17:48

My recent introduction to Crystals has brought up what
I feel is an intriguing question with regard to a new
    angle on crystal "power".

An interesting channeled quote from a "master guide"
concerning crystals is included in the book "Companions in
Spirit". ".....Unfortunately your dominant culture has
brought about the spread of techniques and habits which
are ecologicallly unsound. We're currently influencing
you to change in this regard- for example, to generate
electricity by means of crystals rather than with fossil
    or nuclear fuels. ...."

As a mechanical engineer I thought I was pretty up to
date on alternative energy sources, but I have not heard
a glimmer of a quartz crystal being plugged into a circuit
as an actual power *source*, much less used as a major energy
alternative. Does anybody know of any developments that
    I am not aware of?

The closest I can find to current reality in this is the
Sci-Fi author, Marion Zimmer Bradley's, use of crystals
throughout her Darkover series as an energy source, including
charging batteries. Looking back in Sci-Fi history, most
references look pretty tame compared to the reality of
future shock. Maybe Jung's Archetypal subconscience at
    work?

Not to pass off the quote as an off the wall comment with
absolutely no basis, I did find some interesting related
properties in my ancient "Amateur Radio Handbook". Maybe
not the latest in high tech references but I am a
*mechanical* engineer. Most "electrical" references to
quartz crystals deal with their capability of amplifying or
filtering frequencies, which could be an interesting Psychic
Phenomenom digression in itself. A reference was also
made to their property of developing a potential(voltage)
between two electrodes when squeezed between them. This
may explain the "tingling" when holding a crystal, and
when plugged into one of the variations of the basic
electronics equations Power=Voltage squared divided by
    Resistance -Voila! Crystal power.

The same electronics electronics book mentions that
mechanical vibrations are transformed into alternating
voltages of corresponding frequencies by crystals. Another
way to get crystal power? You electrical types should have
fun shooting down some theory here or bringing up other
crystal properties that could be extrapolated to crystal's
    potential "Psychic Phenomenon" uses.

Now, how to run my car on this new found power? As resistance
approaches 0, power goes the other way;-Super conductors
    anyone? Amplified frequencies are vibrations are energy;
-maybe some psychic stimulation, a la Bradley ?

We should have some good open minded technical types out
there to come up with some good comments and brain storming
on the "practical" side of crystal power.

Remember your Laws of Thermodynamics..."There are
    no free lunches".

307.1Crystals are pretty, not powerfulTLE::BRETTMon Feb 09 1987 23:1516
Of course, the reason crystals are the shape they are is because
they are have the LEAST, not most, possible energy that way. If
you like they are lots of atoms that have each fallen to the bottom
    of their particular little hole.

Now, looking at them, people say "oh, how regular, how pretty; there
must be lots of energy there". Well, thats just a typical example
of how one's intuition, which was developed for coping with things
in the inches-to-miles/seconds-to-years scale of things screws up
really badly when confronted with something outside that scale.

So, my vote is your guide knows nothing about physics, and there
is little or no energy to be obtained from crystals (except, of
    course, "Beam me up Scotty...")

All of my experience with crystals has been in the R.F. field. Two
of the main uses being in generating an oscilating voltage wave
for use in receivers and transmitters, and as filters in the same. The
crystals are cut so that an applied voltage causes them to vibrate
at a specific frequency.Very low power is present, being supplied
by an external source.I am speaking of quartz here.Perhaps other
    crstals have different properties.

Don't blow this off completely. Many channels have talked about
crystals being used by Atlantis for there power needs and we have
a very primative electricity generating crystals now. It's call
pezoelectricity and you see them on your gas barbaques and cigarette
lighters. When a quartz crystal is thumped a 1/4 inch electrical
arc can be generated. Granted this is not a megawatt generator
    but it is a start.

    re: .1

To say that the atoms have the "LEAST" energy in the form of a crystal
is not quite true. Experiments have shown that a lack of entropy
can be tapped for energy. In this case, if it could be done, tapping
the energy associated with the ordered structure of a crystal would
destroy the structure - and the crystal, at least in part. I assume
this is not what people in this conference are interested in.

    re: .2

The lattice structure of crystals is used to transduce energy from
one form to another, sometimes with some nice additional properties.
For "quartz clocks", specially tuned crystals are used. They are
made to specific geometries to resonate at a particular desired
frequency. This is also used to time almost every computer's internal
circuitry (a little computer stuff in this conference doesn't hurt).

Regular patterns of the atoms allows this usage; it is akin to the
difference between laser light and an ordinary light bulb. The
former is formed (using a crystal, by the way) with light waves
which are aligned in frequency and phase. Ordinary white light
is random in phase and frequency.

So we do know that atoms organised in a crystal form show special
properties usable, at least, in electronics and in lasers. Whether
they have some other power to transduce other forms of energy is
the subject of this topic. I hesitate to say that "physics" says
crystals only do what "physicists" already know about.

    re: .3

My understanding is that the piezoelectric crystals used by BBQs,
etc., are transducers. The starters must be squeezed to work.
The mechanical energy of your hand is changed to the electrical
arc. The same thing is used in ion generators for crystal dust
    removers for vinyl records.

Piezoelectric crystals will take electrical energy applied across
two parallel faces and change it to mechanical energy across two
other parallel faces, or vice versa.

Given that Atlantis never existed, one may as well quote a Tom Swift
book to show that crystals can be used this way.

    Re Atlantis:

Let it rest; there's a whole 'nother note on the subject. However,
since the existence of a superscientific/crystal_powered Atlantis
is at best highly suspicious, using it as an argument is, as Bevin
(.8) says, intellectually equivalent to quoting a Tom Swift novel.

    On crystals:

Piezolectricity is a form of transduction. You don't get out energy
that wasn't put in in another form (for those like me who go back
to the stone age, the "crystal" phonograph cartridges used in the
early phonographs use piezolectric crystals to transform needle
motion to electrical signals, which, when amplified, become sound
via speakers). Galena crystals, though, can be shown to "produce"
energy under certain conditions. Actually, the lead sulphide crystals
rectify radio-frequency energy (they were the basis for the old
"crystal sets"), and where such energy is present, they can transform
    it into something useful.

Using crystals paranormally would have to take advantage of some
characteristic enabling them to tap other energies, rather than
that they are inherent energy _sources_, like batteries.

307.10crystal power in more recent legends...WORM::ACKLEYALANFri Mar 13 1987 19:0660
There is a fascinating but possibly useless book about an invention
that would somehow transduce energy in large enough quantities to
be useful. The book is "The Sea Of Energy In Which The Earth Floats"
by T Henry Moray of Salt Lake City.
It says that Mr. Moray, in the teens and twenties, invented
a device the size of a toaster that would draw enough energy out
of the atmosphere to power a normal household.
It is said that Moray was hassled by the oil companies, who
didn't want anyone using unmeterable power sources. According
to the book (written by his son) Mr. Moray died with the secret
of some critical component of the device.

It seems that Mr. Moray had been obsessed with obtaining pure
crystaline germanium, and had possibly constructed some unusual
    form of diode or triode.

    --------- another alternate energy source? ;

Wilhelm Reich was said to have created a motor which drew energy
out of the atmosphere. He also is said to have died with some
    critical detail of the device.

    --------- and one more on crystals;

Nostradamus is said to have predicted that the energy crisis
would be solved when mankind learned how to make light go in circles
    inside of crystals.
Perhaps there is a way to make light reflect from one facet
of a crystal to another, without being able to escape the crystal.
If this is possible, the crystal could be used as a battery of
sorts. Such a device might make solar energy much more feasable.

    --------- and a final note on the legendary Atlantis crystal;

Nikola Tesla (the inventor of AC generators + motors, radio,
flourescent lights and almost everything electrical that Edison
didn't get to first) worked for a long time on a system to distribute
    electrical power without using wires.
He caused the entire planet to resonate with the power of his
generators, and power could be picked up with nothing but a tuned
antenna. This system would have allowed cars and planes to operate
without fuel tanks. Here again there is some anecdotal evidence
that this system was never commercially produced because of the
    economics of unmeterable power.
Although his system has never been duplicated (so far as I know)
it is well authenticated. (I am from Colo. Springs, where Tesla
had a lab, and did these experiments. I was told where to look
in the Colo. Springs library by one of my Engineering professors
    here.)
This system, so far as distribution is concerned, is quite similar
to the legendary "crystal of Atlantis". Perhaps combining one
of Nostradomus's crystal storage devices with a Tesla distribution
system, would result in a system like the legend indicates.

Does it really matter if the great crystal actually existed? The
concepts are there in the collective unconscious, and the legend
may point the way to a potential invention, even if the legend is
    merest myth.

An interesting aside...it seems that physics/materials research
has yielded a superconductor that works at the temperatures of liquid
nitrogen. This makes something like a source that holds energy
perfectly for a long time much more practical. They say they will
have roon temperature superconductors before "too long".

There is no resistance in a superconductor.

307.12Crystals from Lemuria?PUZZLE::GUEST_TMPFri Mar 20 1987 04:2645
For those of you who need to catch up on metaphysics...let me
inform you that a civilization named Lemuria existed prior to and
into the first of the three civilizations of Atlantis. Lemuria
was an extremely evolved civilization (spiritually) and its major
physical attribute was the extent to which crystals were in use
then. They had crystal cities located in areas that were inaccessible
other than by teleportation. Crystals were used much as we use
books--i.e., as record-keeping devices or as tools for implanting
a particular knowledge or a method for amplifying particular energies.
These human beings were so evolved that they eventually decided
that they no longer had a need for the physical incarnations which
they were experiencing and eventually pretty much left "en masse"
as their reality changed and Lemuria vanished (sunk into the Pacific
Ocean wherein they had existed.) Before they left, however, they
decided to leave their knowledges and wisdoms on the planet and
did so by implanting this information into crystals. Thereupon
they took these crystals around the planet and buried them in the
ground so that there energy could be passed on the their discoverers
as well as to other crystals and other minerals. It just so happened
that the second civilization of Atlantis located these super generators
of wisdom but, being less evolved apparently, abused them. These
crystals then became their version of our "Saturday night special
and they were therefore misused and abused. Many of these same
crystals came to rest in many other, later, hotspots of civilization
e.g. Egypt, but never again have they regained the prominence they
enjoyed in Lemuria. There is at present a resurgence in their use
but it is not anticipated to regain their former prevalent usage.

Be aware that this concept, though not provable scientifically,
can be seen to have merit. Crystals are currently being used in
experiments (with surprisingly "miraculous" results) at LBL
in Berkeley and by body workers who are getting very favorable
results in "curing." As was mentioned earlier in this forum,
the fact that piezo-electric energy exists gives creedence to
the possibility and even the probability that crystals can perform
as stated herein. See information in 316.30-34 for more sources
of support. Also try to located information on the crystal skulls
that have been found throughout the world--all appear to have been
    cut from tools not thought to be human; all are of a female skull;
all can be seen to depict scenes which are not "from this earth."
So far 9 of these skulls have been found...all are in private hands
and it is assumed that 4 more skulls remain. All very intriguing,
    huh?!
                             FRED.

    Re .12:

The existence of a Lemuria is hardly proven or verifiable. As stated
in your note, Fred, you take for granted that not only did Lemuria
(or sometimes it's called "Mu") exist, but that _three_ civilizations
    existed on "Atlantis."

Some of us who are well into the metaphysical scene take a lot of
that with large doses of salt.

307.14Crystal Power Computer?MIST::IVERSONThere's a seeker born every minuteWed Apr 29 1987 16:0820
How about another *scientific* attribute of crystals
that I have heard about that could be extrapolated to
the use of crystals in the world of Psychic Phenomenon.

According to a local crystal expert who is also tied in
with the world of high tech ( Microsoft if I remember
correctly), a top ranked researcher associated with Bell
Labs has been/ is working with quartz crystals in their
"natural" form as a computer storage device. The reasoning
is that the quartz has the *potential* to store more
information than currently used form of silicon.

I gleaned this information from Jack Frasl during a rather
lenghty discussion and unfortunately cannot remember the
    name of the researcher.

Other than creating a nightmare for the chip packager
    :-) , any comments?
