305.0. "Be Prepared -- A Philosophical Entry" by ERASER::KALLIS (Hallowe'en should be legal holiday) Fri Feb 06 1987 20:02

    A short just-before-departure note:

Often, when people hear of paranormal experiences, they go through
a lot of mon Monday Morning quarterbacking; "If I were in his shopes,
    I'd have ..." or "Why didn't she just ...?"

    Fine.

So far [knock wood :-)], I've not had a paranormal experience I
couldn't handle, but yesterday coming to work, the brakes in my
car failed completely. _Upon reflection_ I figured out that if
I'd just downshifted to kill speed, killed the ignition, or whatever,
there would have been little trouble. But there was a period of
about three or four seconds when "instinctive reaction" took over
and, for that period of time, I was almost helpless.

I then swerved to a snowbank to kill some speed, pumped my emergency
brake (which was pretty ineffective, as it happened), and I turned
a corner. By that time, the car was slow, and repeated pumpings
    got the car stopped.

This was _not_ paranormal; however, it brings up as good point.
Once my pulse rate reached normal, I decided what courses of action
I _should_ have taken. I then prepared myself to employ them for
the rest of the drive, which I made to my destination without further
    incident.

But it makes me offer some advice.

If you experience a paranormal event for which you have no forewarning,
once you regain some control, stop and work out a strategy as what
to do should you ever experience it again. _Prepare yourself to
use that strategy_. Then, you stand a much better chance of
maintaining control, and you'll in the future be able to profit
    from it.

    Steve Kallis, Jr.

P.S.: The car was undamaged, thanks. :-)

This also applies to dreams and dream analysis. Good point Steve.
