I've tried Stargate and also read Tarot (for several years). The
differences for me are mostly in the type of symbolism used. Most
Tarot decks are visuals from 1 or more systems of occult/metaphysical
philosophy (astrology, numerology, Egyptian, Esoteric Christian, etc.). The
symbols from the Stargate are related more to everyday symbols (gate,
rope). These may be easier for some people to recognize what the
Stargate symbols represent in their lives. Also Tarot decks seem
to "spook" some people & the Stargate seems less "occultic" and
more psychological.
I have used the Stargate for the same purposes that I use the Tarot
for. Most Stargate cards have similar conterparts in the Tarot
deck.
I prefer reading with the Tarot because it's symbolism triggers
my intuition more. When determining which is right for you, remember
both are good tools so choose the one you are most comfortable with.
I would suggest looking at the Stargate cards and more than
one Tarot deck. The deck that you are drawn to and whose symbolism
you can identify with is the one you should pick. In other words,
use the hammer with the most comfortable handle.

| The thing that distinguishes STAR+GATE from Tarot is that one does not have to
go somewhere to get a reading, you select a question or a topic and discover
the answers for yourself. It is a way for each individual to know more
about their own life. We each know more about our own life and our own
truths than someone else ever could.
Divination is the umbrella term for activities done with Tarot, the I Ching,
and now STAR+GATE. Divination - variously understood to mean fortune-telling,
prophesy, or intuitive insight. Divination, from _divine_ pertaining to god or
to be god-like. The trouble is, in the past divining seemed to be the
exclusive property of seers and prophets, people who might be perceived by
the common person as anything from a messenger of god to a clever faker. The
term intuitive insight is probably a more accurate description of divination,
and everyone possesses this faculty regardless of its degree of use. Anyone
can develop this gift into a powerful tool for living.
Much mystique and superstition has prevailed around the idea of seeing past
the moment and beyond appearances. But there is enough known today about the
inherent capabilities of man, and enough tools at hand to help develop them,
that each person should rightly claim his or her own gift for insight as a
basic part of beingness.
How do you tap into this intuitive insight? Where do you go when you need
answers? The answer is: Just about anywhere, _if_ you really want an answer.
It isn't that simple, of course. Many people, whether they are looking inside
themselves or are turning outside for help, find only confusion.
So, STAR+GATE is a tool for clearing away confusion. It is based in part on
the idea that there is no real dividing line between the inside and the
outside, between self and not-self, between you and others. STAR+GATE views
the outside world as a mirror, a reflection, of the interior universe. As
humans, we live in this flux of impressions and experiences, this constant
interchange between inner and outer. STAR+GATE is a carefully conceived
mirroring device based on principles of life itself. When you look into the
mirror of STAR+GATE, you see a symbolic portrait of yourself. This portrait
may please you or challenge you or upset you. You may reject it or allow it to
inspire you. But the picture is always your own.
STAR+GATE serves as a trigger. You create a picture of events and experiences
in your life which often seem unrelated until something, in this case
STAR+GATE, triggers the connection, the realization in your mind.
Psychologists call this special connectedness, beyond cause and effect,
synchronicity, a term first used by Jung. It suggests that the link between
apparently unrelated events in your life is you, your understanding, your
insight. Only you can give special meaning to these events.
What happens to you in life, then, belongs expressly to you. No one will ever
have quite your perspective on the world nor experience things quite like you
do. Everything that happens to you is in synchronization with your particular
life, and it is all a reflection of you. It may be clear or unclear,
lighthearted or profound, heeded or ignored. But the message is there,
especially if you are looking for answers. The outcome shown in the cards
belong to you. They are your portrait and your answer. Since the Symbolic
Cards are simple, everyday symbols, the system is accessible to many.
There is nothing esoteric or technical that makes it difficult to learn or use.
