| Hmm. I notice that whatever affected you didn't seem to until you
reached the second floor, according to what you said. Yet the feeling
seemed to persist once you'd made the connection.
One of the elder traditions suggests something called a _genius
loci_ -- a place where something [roughly akin to a "nature spirit"]
exists and affects its surroundings. Such a _genius loci_ can be
beneficent, malevolent, or neutral. Supposing something analogous
was in that apartment house, the scenario I envision would be you
entered the place, reached the center of the phenomenon and rather
"caught the attention" of whatever it was. And whatever it was
terrified you.
If you are that sensitive to whatever it was, I'd not return there,
but a few discreet inquiries about the place (if you're that
interested) probably could be made.
